Less damage than if the missle falls off a building

There was no visual evidence then as now. A claim from Ukrainian defence official then, and a claim from UK minister for defence this time. All the images doing the rounds were debunked, they were years old. No other proof came out IIRC

No agreement from Rammstein to send tanks, but German won't stand in others way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,322 ✭✭✭✭markodaly

Seems that the German government are under HUGE pressure in relenting in giving permission to send their tanks to Ukraine.

Seems every country in NATO is backing the Germans into a corner and the mood music is that they are going to relent.

If or when it comes to pass, and if Ukraine can get 300 or so leopard 2's into their ranks with men trained up to use them, it could be very decisive in the outcome of the war.

Ohh there is self interest involved, for sure, but fûck all use in sending xyz if many millions of people who should be making good with these resources to defend their country, to defend The Ukraine, have fûcked off to enjoy a nice modern European life. Thousands of kilometres from the fighting. Remember, women, children, OAPs…. I witnessed it first hand at a local university ….BS, lots of fit healthy young people, 20’s, 30’s, 40’s etc…. Can’t have been SFA wrong health wise as there was after a day a Q 20 meters long to join the gym.

so in an aspect, that aspect it’s a failed state already. Expecting everyone else to sacrifice and do their bidding when they themselves or many of them, can’t simply be arsed.

plus if the war was to escalate any further, it’s World War III. My own feeling is unless Putin gets bumped off or dies, it’s probably going to require further military escalation. To that point…. If Putin attacks or tangibly threatens the EU for example. Any further west, the Ukraine the EU / US / UK have to go to town on Russia…

Any additional info to that? Been watching all for some of the Eastern countries to declare they're going for it ASAP.

How many Irish people pissed of to Canada, Germany, US, Australia, NZ, when a little economic strife beset this paradise on earth, just for a few bob, let alone because their apartment was blown up or just to protect their children from the prospect of death?

There has been a ban on men of service age leaving Ukraine as of a few days after the invasion. Most who have left are women and children.

Which of these apartments and houses is yours? Why aren't you still living in it?

    Rammstein?

    "Dicke Titten" is right

I don't it would help too much though. Might cheer up the poor soldiers but that's about it.

"Reportedly". The UN investigation teams didn't see them and they saw both the Russian and Ukrainian abuses in Donbas. Tbh I think the mobile crematoria is rumour/propaganda/hideous wishful thinking to go "Look, defo nazis!!". I'll only buy it when I see reports from solid sources.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

No decision has been made. Germany has not agreed that other countries can send it either. The comment was taken out of context.

Russia has to be stopped, and stopped in such a way that they have to sue for peace, so that afterwards they cannot twist or turn it into some kind of victory, like " It was not Ukraine that defeated us, it was the combined forces of the West, UK and USA, but we won in Ukraine!" type of propaganda. And after that they have to be weakened economically so much, that they will not have the financial means to wage war anywhere in the world for many years to come. Don't be under any illusions about Vladimir Putin's ambitions, If he wins in Ukraine, he will not stop his murderous campaigns to "restore Russia to its former glory". Not supplying Ukraine with the weapons they need now, is the real cause of prolonging the war.

I've heard that Scholz's SPD party are a big part of the problem. It seems many of them are opposed to sending tanks to Ukraine. Divisions in the party must be very serious if Scholz is resisting heavy international pressure, even from close friends and allies.

Very interesting and detailed article on Transnistria.

I am left slightly puzzled by the assumption that gas and troops and equipment and such, can pass betweeen Russia and Transnistria at will, when the geographic reality seems to be that Romania, Moldova and Ukraine hold all the geographic cards and that if they all ban Russian planes from their airspace, the Transnistrian enclave is not going to survive a military encounter with Ukraine for long. There is just no supply route. All that free gas mentioned is entirely at the behest of Ukraine, not Russia.

If Ukraine decides there is to be no more Transnistria, then they easily have the means to make it happen. This is what they should do, given recent history concerning enclaves and places seeded with Russians as a means to provide later military excuses. Needs to be done in the closing stages of the Russian conflict when there are forces to spare and before there is an actual cessation of hostilities and euro twatlings are in a position to raise objections. A couple false flags and have at them.

There are reports of a quite a few joining Wagner, a sort of modern international brigade.

It seems that many miss what's really happening in Ukraine and are focused on what Zelensky is looking for, and the cost. What's happening is that Ukrainians are fighting the enemy at the European gate, and if the Ruzzians get in that gate, then all hell will break loose in Europe, and all your comments about what it costs to feed , educate them etc ( copy and paste from one of your comments on the Multicultural thread,) will fade into insignificance, when or if war breaks out, and that's for sure. We should be down on our knees thanking Zelensky and Ukrainians for what they are doing, protecting Europeans, and not bean counting. The real cost in this war is Ukrainian lives, and that's part of the price they are paying. And if they were not, then maybe European's would be paying.

The ammo stockiles are iffy. I saw images, which of course I can't find now, showing huge piles of shells and weapons all rusted to bits stored in the open, but I have also seen pics of stuff stored indoors, but even that stuff is likely unsafe:

The pipeline surely comes via Ukraine, so whether there's gas to tap into is entirely up to Ukraine, not Russia.

Are they tone deaf? What other country (apart from Russia) was looking to block leopards being given to Ukraine?

Ukraine should come out and state they don't want Abrams to put the pressure back on Sholtz so he can come up with another excuse.

People focusing on Germany but it's the US and Germany both refusing to send tanks. There is cracks widening in NATO. Needless to say, this is what Putin wants.

I think the real issue is Germany doesn't think Ukraine can win the war.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

The US has always said the Abrams tanks weren't suitable for ukraine due to the more difficult matainance involved with it's gas turbine engine vs the diesel leopards, the Ukrainans are already well versed in diesel macanicals,

    This is Germany playing games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,852 ✭✭✭zv2

Ukraine can win with superior Leopards and Howitzers etc, but they can't win without them. The west can't win this war in dribs and drabs, that is a recipe for failure. They are being controlled by fear and Putin knows it. Putin would see Russian descend into the abyss before he gives in. The west should arm Ukraine now and stop being such cowards.

It looks like history is starting up again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,844 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

There's also no countries operating Abrams in Europe, so that's going to be difficult in maintenance and repairs. Everyone but Germany knows the quickest tank Ukraine can hop into and turn-key on, is a leopard.

We all know Russia is the biggest donor of tanks to Ukraine. Maybe Germany would feel more comfortable giving tanks to Russia and then in turn Ukraine can capture them.

It's probably the quickest way Ukraine would get a leopard at this stage.

Maybe nordstream 2 also needs to go boom, so the lure of cheap gas will truly be gone and Germany can go all in on Ukraine.

Baffling, I mean if Germany choose the same policy (no German tanks leaving Germany) in 1939, it would have been good. It's a little different now.

So what does the smoke say, tanks or no tanks? Which is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,661 ✭✭✭fly_agaric

In fairness I don't think that is the reason (for Germany not supplying tanks - if that is what you were getting at!).

These Western companies still in Russia could not be making great amounts of money right now, could they (?).

If they up and leave they will lose all their assets there. A complete write off of whatever they have, they will at best have take minimal % of value they can get off a local or some Turkish or Chinese or Indian war profiteering company, or at worst everything will just be straight up robbed off them at stroke of a pen and gifted to a Putin crony. The EU (and Germany) will have the most to divest & unwind simply because they have the most & were most tied into the Russian economy.

I think at this stage sanctions should be brought in that start to force these companies, particularly ones that are important to Russia's economy/society & indirectly aid the war effort to divest themselves from Russia + face up to it no matter what the loss is (or become a Russian company if that is what they want and get locked out of the West).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,242 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

Russia needs time at the moment, get ready for a spring offensive. Use sheer numbers massive fire power, Leopard tanks will be a significant threat to that. Every day Berlin can buy for them is a help.

Every day this war goes on the chance for it to become even more damaging grows.

Russia will lose, it may burn to the ground after but the problem with lunatics and petrol is that they may burn an awful lot more before being stopped. This war can become an awful lot worse and bigger.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 395 ✭✭Slava_Ukraine

Time to consider secondary sanctions. Thankfully, my company decided within weeks of the conflict starting to pull out of russia and never deal with them again.

If Germany thought Ukraine would win the war I'm sure they'd get a lot more military aid.

There is a major Russian assault coming. I wonder if it's a case of would the tanks be in service in time but also would it be enough anyway?

From Germany's perspective these concerns seem understandable even if frustrating for everyone else.
