Effort - as in enthusiasm, energy, interaction with the crowd. Was a standard "go through the motions" performance.

To say that he has historically not bothered doesn't make it any better. I remember seeing some similar type comments about Neil Youngs self-indulgent 10 minute guitar solos at gigs, which became boring for 99% of the crowd in a very short time. But the die-hard rose-tinted spectacled fans were saying - shure that's Neil for ya, bit of an auld trickster. That's all fine if gig-goers are treated to a free gig. But we are paying for the bit of entertainment. I'm all about the music, but a little effort wouldn't go amiss to make a night somewhat memorable.

https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058244841/spiritualized#latest Your viewpoint has changed since the night in question.

As for Neil Young? Well i'd be in the extended solos and rumbling feedback noise excursions camp so we'll probably never agree on what we want from a gig.

For example, I really like Thumper, great band and have seen them loads. But i am absolutely sick to death of the showbiz gimmickry and wish they'd just concentrate on the music.

Big on the all mouth and trousers scene

Ha ha. I must have some multiple personality disorder!!! One side of me doesn't realise that the other side is having a good time. I must have enjoyed it more that I can remember. All I can remember is standing at the back thinking this is quite boring, and that would have been the same to just stay at home listening to the songs on headphones. I don remember that I really enjoyed Come Together, and the following song.

Funny - your comment just before mine sums up my current memory of the night. I guess my opinion on it can be dismissed, as I don't know if I enjoyed it, or if I had a rotten time!!!!!😊

    Seasick Steve - Vicar Street

    Cruachan - Grand Social

    Volbeat - Three Arena

    Flogging Molly - Vicar Street

    (Yeah I know I've 4, couldn't narrow it down)

Some fairly decent music there when you consider how many people went to Garth Brooks. I wouldn't have much time for Arcade Fire but otherwise pretty good.

Peter Hook & The Light - The Olympia

Sharon Van Etten - Vicar Street

    Pavement - Vicar Street

    Green Day - Marley park

    Cormac begley - ATN

    Mary wallopers - Dolans

There's so many more to mention and it was difficult to narrow it down to just three

Saw over 60 performances in '22. The 5 that stand out -

    • Macca at Glasters: tough to look past for gig of the year. Any year really.
    • Gorillaz 3Arena: phenomenal energy. Felt like 10000 people's first gig. Incredible crowd response.
    • Earthless Whelans: Why can't we get more shows like this here? I walked out feeling a half-foot taller.
    • Roisín Murphy Olympia: Proper post pandemic let off here. She is incredible, huge Bowie vibes from her performance on the night - can't wait to see her play Dublin this summer again.
    • Pavement Vicar St: Superb night from start to finish. All the plaudits this show has received since are bang on the money.

22 was a lean enough year for me, but still got to approx 20 gigs

    1. nick mason: convention centre. Likely never to hear some of those songs again live

2 Elbow: 3 arena. always incredible

3 Foy Vance: cypress avenue. first time seeing him, just a very, very enjoyable gig.
