Typo re: the distance my friend…. The time zone comment is accurate..

but the point still stands , regardless of your opinion re: rubbish.

I can assure you….. nobody I’ve spoken with personally has the slightest care or interest for Ukranian people, over anyone else experiencing similar hardships….anywhere. Especially with some of the carry on from our government, NGO’s and other enablers that has compromised our own wellbeing… and will continue to do so for probably years….

War porn… not a nice term but it’s certainly interesting how many NGOs and independent media in league are amassed with quite graphic media from the war that must cost a lot… in terms of finances and risk…especially with such mass expert mainstream coverage.

be nice if every now and then if some of these people here, could put more effort into affording people, Irish people and (whisper it quietly) taxpayers with first hand news, information and visual documents of things going on that impact our lives and wellbeing… no wars, thankfully… but we could do with respectful coverage of our issues and challenges here. They are numerous and far reaching and very impactful.

of 11 headlines on rte news online earlier, 3 were related to ireland… Johnny Cooper, Covid and domestic violence….

very detailed coverage of war issues, and others internationally but hey….almost like we are being enabled to have our eyes peaked globally as opposed to our own problems here…. Which they should be first and foremost.l

I believe the war porn thing started back in the early 2000s when people started posting execution videos from the Iraq war online.

Seeing people getting killed for real is "entertainment" to some people.

If you don't mind I want to use your post as jumping off point to quote something which you've reminded me of:

In Confessions, Book VI, St. Augustine recounts the case of his friend Alypius, who “had been born in the same town as I [Carthage] but … was a bit younger than I.” Augustine admired Alypius, who shared his older friend’s interest in Christianity and was studying Scripture with him. “But in the whirlpool of Carthaginian fashion—where frivolous spectacles are hotly followed—he had been inveigled into the madness of the gladiatorial games.” Alypius “doted upon the circus,” Augustine writes, “and I was deeply grieved, for he seemed likely to cast away his very great promise—if, indeed, he had not already done so.” Alypius preceded Augustine to Rome. Augustine recounts the sequel in Chapter 13 of Book VI:

There he was carried away again with an incredible passion for the gladiatorial shows. For, although he had been utterly opposed to such spectacles and detested them, one day he met by chance a company of his acquaintances and fellow students returning from dinner; and, with a friendly violence, they drew him, resisting and objecting vehemently, into the amphitheater, on a day of those cruel and murderous shows. He protested to them: “Though you drag my body to that place and set me down there, you cannot force me to give my mind or lend my eyes to these shows. Thus I will be absent while present, and so overcome both you and them.” When they heard this, they dragged him on; [they were] probably interested to see whether he could do as he said. When they got to the arena … Alypius kept his eyes closed and forbade his mind to roam abroad after such wickedness. Would that he had shut his ears also! For when one of the combatants fell in the fight, a mighty cry from the whole audience stirred him so strongly that, overcome by curiosity … he opened his eyes and was struck with a deeper wound in his soul than the victim whom he desired to see had been in his body…. For, as soon as he saw the blood, he drank in with it a savage temper, and he did not turn away, but fixed his eyes on the bloody pastime, unwittingly drinking in the madness—delighted with the wicked contest and drunk with blood lust. He was now no longer the same man who came in, but was one of the mob [that] he [had come] into, a true companion of those who had brought him thither.

There's a delicate type of Putinist snaking regarder who reach for their rosary beads every time it's put to them a generation of Russian men are headed for the wood-chipper in tattered Kremlin issue uniform, and all for nothing.

The butchery of Ukrainian civilians, the violation of children, and the egregious shattering of the hard earned European peace sees them go on the missing list however.

    All very curious.

    Don't lie.

I'm not pro-Russian/pro-Putin. Support for Ukraine doesn't depend on bloodthirstiness and celebrating videos of people's limbs being blown apart.

A majority of people understand this easily.

What do you think of the Red Cross association, who will give medical aid to any soldier on humane grounds?

'sees them go on the missing list however'

False in the case of myself who did condemn the killing of Ukraine civilians

In case you're confused, every single uniformed Russian with a toecap on a Ukrainian blade of grass is a legitimate target for the blender. I simply don't give a sh*t how many go back to their mothers in zinc boxes. And I'd submit I'm firmly in the majority on that point.

Don't care if they were conscripted forcibly, it may focus the minds of Russians who acted like chucklef*cks over the last 20 years as their country hurtled toward full-blooded fascism.

Europe cannot afford a fascist irredentist shithole lapping at its borders, and it will be broken by hook or by crook. Sow the storm, reap the whirlwind. Russians and their dim-witted apologists in the West need to reconcile themselves to that.

I am of the believe that these clearly senseless wars that keep going on are benefiting someone behind the scenes ... the arms indsutry ... the news ... other behind the scenes entities ...

This Ukraine war most certainly does not benefit Ukraine ... or Russia either ... it will set back both countries 100-200 years ... the Russian government are either individuals with low IQs planted there to make stupid decisions or are working directly ... following orders from forces that 100% control them to benefit corrupt arms dealers or gangsters or both ... either way they deserve to be gone ...

The elephant in the room is these things suit TV stations and news too .. people get addicted to watching this horror ... it was the same with the equally stupid Iraq wars and their fancy titles like shock and awe ...

When this Ukraine invasion stuff came about first I assumed it was just a cynical diversion tactic to mask Russia's then abysmal Covid stats and the buildup of army would be sent home once Covid receded ... that would make logical sense ... but the fact the regime there actually launched this war meant they couldn't care less about Russia, Russians or stability ... they clearly work for stateless corrupt entities who are creaming off billions from this evil ... destroying Ukraine and then plunging Russia into a collapse/civil war state ... in other words turning this region into another Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria ...

Don’t lose sight of this fully remains within Russia/Putin’s control. Ukraine have no choice as they are threatened with an existential threat.

    Agreed?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,724 ✭✭✭growleaves

    I think you're confused.

The debate is over 'war porn', getting off on seeing people killed.

Sounds like you aren't into it yourself in which case there's no disagreement between us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

You're not going to get someone who's attempting push a spooky theory of an opaque "hidden hand" directing this war to admit that it's far more basic than that. I.e: an elective war launched by a neo-fascist Russia that could end tommorow if they went home.

Nobody I know of is getting off on it, perhaps those that bring up such a thing… yourself perhaps?! Because for normal people getting sexual gratification from destruction is beyond bizarre. Yet, you can conceive of it. Very strange.

Imagine someone is attacking someone in your family and the attacker gets knocked down, are you :-

    a) Sexually excited

    b) Happy and grateful like a normal person

To labour the point, a normal person wouldn’t even conceive option a)

    Savvy?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

I think you're missing the point. There's little utility in engaging in fake peacenik rhetoric.

Nobody is mourning the Russian war dead, nor weeps when they get vapourized into a pile of blood and bone - because they are engaged in a fascist war.

That's the hard reality. This thread is pearl clutching with a side-order of fake peacenik fries.

Russia goes home, the war ends. Otherwise it's the blender for Russian men.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,071 ✭✭✭Jequ0n

You got to love how any balanced view on the matter gets shot down by the moral police squad by branding the posters pro Russian supporters.

People like violence if it doesn’t impact them personally. It’s human nature whether you like it or not, and the ones with a moral superiority complex won’t change it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,724 ✭✭✭growleaves

I didn't 'bring it up', it's the subject of the thread.

    'War porn' doesn't mean literal sex-porn, it's sadism/blood-lust.

It's beyond ordinary gratitude. Of course I want to see an attacker/invader killed or defeated.

Actually, the more I think about, those that bring up the destruction of invading Russian forces and porn are far more likely into be into that kind of thing. I imagine they like to talk about, probably normalises it for them, even if it’s talked about negatively.

Would be interested if there’s any psychology professionals/students.

You’re the one that said “The debate is over 'war porn', getting off on seeing people killed”.

What do mean by “getting off” - I take that as a sexual reference, no? Accusing those delighted seeing murdering rapists being destroyed as “getting off” is a strange accusation… I think the accusers need to look into their own boudoir mirror.

A balanced view where Ukrainians and invading Russians are equivalent is a despicable position and any such poster deserves to be tracked down like the dog they are. But, we’ll treat all such deviants equally egregiously. Balanced enough for you?

I have no issue with people enjoying the videos. I find it amusing how some people justify their enjoyment by pointing out their moral superiority. There is an amazing amount of delusion in these justifications.

    Tracked down by who?

    Yourself?

You're going way off the deep end mate. Take a breather. Take the afternoon off.

Maybe I am wrong but I honestly don't think Boards has been infiltrated by people that support/love Putin (aka Putinbots or whatever). I don't think there was much interest in Putin in Ireland at all before the war. Why would there be? We have very little interaction with Russia. I rarely hear of Irish people even visiting Russia. He was an irrelevance. Personally speaking, I rarely have any interest in modern foreign politics which is why the Boris and Trump times and threads completely passed me by (I haven't watched Sky News in over 10 years which probably helps). I saw them as silly twitter leaders (and I am not on Twitter either). Actually wasn't Putin a target of utter ridicule when Trump was acting the idiot in power? Didn't Putin go topless and fight a bear or some such? There was one Boards poster (Russia 1917 I think) who was clearing a Putin supporter or pretending to be, it was all a bit weird. But people that think a chat website in Ireland has been "infiltrated" by Putin supporters seems daft to me. To what end like? What could they possibly hope to achieve on Boards, in Ireland? Nice simple riposte though.

My 2nd thought is around the passionate/enthusiastic/fierce Ukraine supporters on Boards. They are right - Russia has committed and continues on the daily basis to commit horrific atrocities against the Ukrainian population and I hope Putin and all the other war criminals in Russia are brought to justice asap. All of Ireland wants that. In the meantime we should continue to house and feed every single Ukrainian that comes to Ireland fleeing that awful war. Whatever it takes. The attacks on the utility infrastructure are disgustingly cowardly and predictable by the madman. At the same time I truly suspect whether 90% of the posters in the Russia thread truly care about the Ukrainian people, I don't think they give a fiddlers about them. I think they are young and just like the war and justify their bloodlust by being on the right side. I wonder do the same posters help to house the Ukrainians here or to volunteer at the hotels and other facilities that host Ukrainians or donate to the various charities helping out? I doubt it. Can they spare any Boards time even? I think they are completely faking it. 100%. Their ringleader is named after a rapid-fire gun from the American civil war.

To clarify, the Ukraine thread in the Politics forum does seem more balanced. It's a more mature forum generally.

On here on boards.ie. For example, it’s great to see them destroyed to the point where their only recourse is to answer with a pitiful “LOL”.

Not sure what you mean by justification. It’s good for those portraying Russia as the victims or the SAME as Ukrainians get responded to. You’ll be familiar with the Edmund Burke quote.

You may think it’s not worth the effort to retort, but there are plenty of us that cannot stomach pro Russian actors on here blame Ukraine or justify Russian actions. And we’ll keep doing so until the Russian midget is forced back… by Ukraine or internally. The faster, the better.
