Yes, however, referees don't deal with it.

Take control, take the wind out of it and set the pace yourself. Everyone knew what he was going to do, take the steam out of it and be prepared.

The GOAT debate was settled, Mbappe has his career ahead of him and has already achieved alot but Messi at 35 just pulled his country through a world cup. I could list his other achievements all day long, no one comes close.

If Mbappe achieves what Messi does and at 35 can drag his country to a world cup, come back to me.

Mbappe was phenomenal once the first penalty went in last night, he also did absolutely nothing as he watched his team get played around with for 80 minutes until Otamendi gifted them a penalty to finally get the momentum going.

He's an incredible talent and has a great career ahead of him but its all ahead of him. Messi is the GOAT, throwing in a young player into the conversation who hasn't won a CL or Ballon Dor yet is nonsense is all im saying.

I was really impressed with the different tactical set ups that Argentina displayed throughout the WC. Hats off to Scaloni for that. Switches from 4-3-3 to 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 and back to 4-3-3 again.

They took the game to France last night and kept their foot on the ball, playing good attacking football with intricate interplay. In other games, we saw them be stodgy and break up play more on the counter. Putting Di Maria in for this game was a great call, his directness hurt France.

Messi was brilliant in that opening 70 mins too. His career building up to this game, and he delivered. at 35. Undisputed GOAT!

Does anyone else just absolutely fking hate the term "GOAT"

Don't mind a good debate about who the best ever is I just hate the acronym.

It's just the latest measure of talent that has lost all meaning by now

    See "World Class" for precedent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,743 ✭✭✭✭rob316

I just hate saying it, if I'm saying it I'll say "greatest of all time", if im typing it I'll put down GOAT

I agree I only learnt what it was a few years ago! First thought was did those Kerry 70's and 80's football lads come up with at the puc fair?!!

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

On this WC on RTE - I think there should be a shake up after this full time

    1) Best analyst - Joey Ndoh - the fella is a legend as far as I am concerned had me in stitches great craic

    2) Most improved analyst - Stephanie Roche and Stephen Kelly (nice delivery and good way about them)

    3) Best co-commentator - Alan Cawley - kicks every ball no matter who is playing and really gets into it.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

One thing I ended up loving about this World Cup was the accurate time added on for stoppages. We saw some mental added on minutes early on but players became aware that there was very little benefit to play acting or any other time wasting because it would all be added on eventually. Consequently we did end up seeing the times come down I think(don’t have data for that but it certainly felt that way). Disappointing to hear the PL doesn’t have plans to follow suit.

What I absolutely hated, was seeing this “let it flow” mentality from referees. So many fouls go unpunished so as to not disturb the flow of the game. It feels so backwards as a concept - like it’s the referees responsibility to not only ensure the players are following the rules but to also ensure that the match is a spectacle. It also further engrains fouling as a legitimate tactic in the game which is bizarre to me. Would love to see it just go back to referees calling fouls as they see them.

There is a video going round at the moment along the lines of "Whatever your favourite player did, Pele did it first."

Pele is also the only player to have won 3 World Cups.

For the people anointing Messi as the Greatest Of All Time, and saying that a World Cup win cements that, I'd say I disagree.

He's definitely in the top 5 players that I have ever seen, but for me Pele is #1.

Tbf Pele got injured in the second game of '62, they won it without him thanks to Garrincha.

Mentioned it in here already but it really is crazy how much the WC can impact a player's legacy when so many players are ruled out just by virtue of being born in the wrong nation. For example Mbappe and Haaland could have near-identical careers for the next 15 years, how much can we really hold it against Haaland if Norway don't win the World Cup?

Whatever Pele did Arthur Friedenreich did first.

I've never seen Pele play he was before my time. His numbers are ridiculous like Messi, I have no idea what the standard of Brazilian football was like back then either which he played his entire career in, so its hard to compare. Messi didn't need a world cup to cement is greatness, the standard he has maintained since a teenager cements that. In my 30 years of watching football he is the best I have seen, played at the highest level throughout and had no equal.

He scored 73 goals for club and country in 2011/2012 it was insane.

Apparently all the big names of Brazil were in the Brazilian league at the time of Pele.

But I watched the whole 1970 final repeat on telly once. To see if Pele was any good. He didn’t really stand out to me to be honest.

Messi, Maradona, Best seem to be on different levels to me anyway. Messi edges it as number 1 for longevity IMO.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

It's had to compare players of different eras e.g. Pele never got to play in Europe plus rules, conditioning, tactics, money, and travel were all different back then. I'd prefer just to say for example:

Pele, Eusébio, Best, Moore were the greats back in the 60's

Cryuff, Beckenbauer, Muller, Keegan in the 70's

Maradona, Platini, Van Basten in the 80's

Romario, Bergkamp, Zidane in the 90's

Ronaldo(original), Maldini, Henry, Xavi in 2000's

Messi, Ronaldo, Iniesta, Zlatan, Pirlo in the 2010's

    Mbappe, tbd in the 2020's

I was thinking that this WC has had more shocks than even the 2002 WC - on the pitch anyway excluding the Keane Saipan incident.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Maradona also had the best ever individual performance throughout a tournament in 86.

I agree with you completely. Whenever I want to judge the ability of a player who has played over 800 games, I just take one game and use that as the way to judge. Never lets me down, ever.

Mbappe is a brilliant player but I think the GOAT debate was always re Messi and Ronaldo. On here and elsewhere there was a ridiculous amount of people trying to argue that Ronaldo was better than Messi, he never ever was and yesterday has put that "debate" finally to rest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,262 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Well wouldn’t you think he would stand flashes of brilliance, movement etc. Not the same as just watching clips etc

Have you ever went to the trouble of watching a whole Pele match? It was a WC final. 1970.

Most Pele matches don’t have that coverage. Decent quality images etc. what’s wrong with that? Pele just seemed like a decent player - OK but didn’t stand out IMO.

Or are you too jacool for school to watch any full Pele games?

You just sound bitter about something. I can’t put my finger on it.

But anyway it was an enjoyable WC 2022 great games, shocks and great final what more do you want?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

A lot of that debate came down to popularity and loyalty. It's hard to actually say who is better when the margins are that fine.

In terms of popularity and loyalty I think Ronaldo has absolutely decimated his legacy over the last year. It feels certain now that in years to come when we waffle on as old men and women it's Messi we will be telling the kids about. Ronnie will be in the Eusabio, Di Stefano, Puskas category.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,262 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Ah Portuguese Ronaldo will always be considered a great. But the difference between Ronaldo and Messi is Ronaldo could play any style.

Personality wise Ronaldo isn’t right in the head because of his family background. But it is because of his family background that he got his drive to succeed.

At least Ronaldo won’t be crying into a camera like Maradona thinking of the player he ‘could have been’.

Ronaldo has got the last ounce out of his talent through sheer hard work and drive. Ronaldo never polluted his body in contrast to Maradona.

    Aqua v Cocaine

Who is the better example as a person? Footballer a different debate. But that is the fun of the discussion.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

"Won't be crying into a camera"

You clearly didn't see his last game for Portugal.
