I don’t like these early kickoffs for World Cup finals. 4 years ago in Moscow the game started early in B-road daylight, at least this time it should be dark. The champs league final in Istanbul will start at 8pm, so don’t see why Sunday should start at 3pm. You need a later kickoff for a better game and atmosphere, there was only 2 good games in this WC Arg vs Holland and Fra vs Eng both 7pm kickoff. I wish this final was a 7pm kickoff. Fu€k u Qatar and the camel u rode in on.

It'll only be noon in Argentina I think... 5pm I think would be a reasonable time to balance the time zones.

Many Argentinians have English surnames from their forbears who settled in that country .

I don’t even understand people saying this is a great WC. For me it has been a terrible WC, the level of football has been awful and I think that is because the smaller teams have gone all out defence. The only good game I saw Morocco play was the semi final defeat to France. It was such a pity Portugal could not get past them, they were probably the most attack minded team in the tournament. At least 2 good teams who are sort of equal are contesting the final. And thank God England got knocked out.

That makes the start time in Qatar 6 pm, and I think with the time change, 8 pm in Ireland in June will be a start time of 11 pm in Instanbul (could be 10 pm). UK and Ireland audiences have been catered to with 7 pm starts here which is 10 pm in Qatar. Not many sporting events in Ireland, apart maybe from boxing would start at a time which would see the finish possibly well past midnight. Transport would have to be taken into account and staffing, as well as TV audiences.

In Argentina it will start at 12 noon local, which is better for them than the 4 am start they had against Saudi. USA audiences, if FIFA are interested, will have to get up early in some places e.g. 7 am in California. It is a world wide event, and the local preferences in any country will not suit lots of others.

If Qatar can do 7pm kickoff up to now, then at least make the final 6pm so there is still enough time for the pageantry afterwards. 4 years ago In Moscow i remember when it started pi$$ing rain and was still bright shortly after game ended. Rain is good but bright is shyte!! I think the suits pick this early kickoff time so that they can have a big fancy event afterwards.

Moscow and Qatar are on the same time, but you can't compare June with December.

More to it than that, a segment of Argentina have pretensions to old style British aristocracy, polo is a popular pass time amongst a segment of the elite in Argentina

Football is not as good now as it was in the 2000s. 1 million % fact.

Virus sweeping through the France camp and social distancing and masks being introduced. 5 players now sick according to latest update. I’m sure they’ll all be fine, but not ideal prep, and viruses have a habit of making you feel a little heavy even after they’ve passed

Having recently had RSV which was in me for about 2 weeks, I cannot imagine playing any type of sports while having this virus. These teams must be having serious rules in place from beginning to prevent any of these respiratory bugs spreading. Obviously they are away from schools and young kids for a long time, and they have medical checks that even the super rich wouldn’t bother with. They will have everything in place to prevent this.

Why would this remind me of the time that South Africa ended up winning a Rugby WC final after the tournament high achievers (with one mega superstar Jonah Lomu) had supposedly mysteriously been ill the days before final.

The RFU and the world got the fairy tale ending with a new multi-coloured South Africa (ok there was only one non white on the team) winning the final on home soil.

Will FIFA get the fairytale they want on Sunday.

Will they get a new future Pele to wheel out on occasions to let the world know how wonderful FIFA are.

I am not allowed discuss …

I thought the exact same thing

some members of the camp blaming the English is a little bizarre!

Nah, they won't be fine. It'll rightly fcuk them up.

I think some of the other Argentina players are being very underrated. Fernandez looks a gem of a player. Alvarez has made a huge impact Mccalister has been excellent. The messi fawning is too much yes he's been outstanding but Argentina as a team have really grown into the tournament.

The only surprise team to reach a WC final has been Croatia in 2018. You could make a case for France in ‘98 also. Otherwise you would have picked the finalists from 6 teams at start in every WC.

LOL at the fact that England have never made the final since ‘66 despite the fact that they would be in near everyone 6 candidates at the start of every WC.

2010 would be an outlier. Spain reached their first and only ever final, and Holland their first since 1978. Brazil is a popular choice every time, but they have not been in the final since 2002.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,808 ✭✭✭Man Vs ManUre

Yes I think Holland in 2010 was a surprise finalist. Spain on the other hand were pre-tournament favorites and definitely in everybody 6 candidates for the final.

I was just wondering. I'd heard a few commentary comments saying things like "the body can't do what it could when he was 25, but he can still pull it off".

I think if he can, it will be more sporadic...age takes its toll on everyone imo.

I think the final will be tight, griezmann will be bottled up, Messi won't be let do **** all, mbappe will be hacked out of it and some fannyhead like Di Maria will get a miserable deflected goal in the 70th minute or so for a damp squib one nil to Argentina.

    I'm obviously a pessimist.

I'm hoping for a good goal fest but fear the above.

2018 is a bit of an outlier, with 6 goals in ordinary time. That was only bettered in one other final.

2006, 2010 and 2014 all went to extra time. Two scoreless draws, which finished 1-0 after extra time, and a 1-1 in ordinary time, which went to penalties. Just 4 goals in six hours of football.

with very little difference in the odds for a 90 minute win between France and Argentina (~ 8/5 vs 9/5) a tight affair is certainly being forecasted by the betting markets

an early goal will be by far the best outcome for a decent game to open it up (as happened in the France - Morocco match)

Glad that Brazilian ref didn't get the final. I suppose with Argentina there it was always a non runner. Hope the Polish lad does well.

Stephen Kelly is certainly dressed up for the occasion.

    oh wait; that’s tomorrow 😧

Age remains undefeated (see Ronaldo but Messi is nearly 2 and a 1/2 years younger of course) but Messi was never an out-and-out speed merchant (he's far more about changing pace rather than outright pace) or a physical beast with the most powerful header or shot like CR7 or hitting acrobatic bicycle kicks so while it's certainly surprising that Messi has had his best world cup at 35 it's not a massive shock that his game based on close control and vision has held up better (despite him being poor by his level in the last couple of years).

Speed is the first thing to go obviously for a player.

IIRC France had a clearer lead initially with most of the bookies but they were reeled in to a virtual dead heat, presumably because of the bug in the camp...

I checked it right after the Morocco game and it was pretty much as close as I recall.

Which I was a bit surprised about at the time.

I read it as very much expected not to have a 90 minute result - which is a big win for the bookies of course.
