Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Gary Hurley grew up playing in West Waterford, which is also the home course of Seamus Power. It would be extraordinary for such a small club to have 2 pros playing on the main tours.

He was also on the Walker Cup in the year that Ireland had 5 players. The others were Paul Dunne, Gavin Moynihan, Cormac Sharvin and Jack Hume. I don't think many would have predicted that he would be the only one with a full European Tour card at this stage of their careers.

Hopefully he can finish the job off over the next 2 days.

Whatever happened to Hume, so much early expectations

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 860 ✭✭✭amlinopta

Turned pro, didn’t last long, gave the game up and at one point this year he was on Paul Dunne’s bag

Really is a shame to see the contrast between those GB&I and US teams in terms of going on to make a career from the game. Bryson obviously made the big time in terms of money but I think that most of the (younger) guys on the US team are floating around the Korn Ferry or PGA despite being household names.

Bogey on the 18th for Hurley yesterday slips him back to 16th position. Nervy day for him now.

2 under through 9, might need another one on the way in to make sure.

Hurley finished joint 13th position on -18. Murphy join 23rd on -17. Both get their tour cards. Well done!

Great to get their cards but it doesn't guarantee anything and they're going to have to scramble around to get into events.

Great leap for 2 lads who were looking at challenge tour next season. Plenty of opportunities to kick on with a solid year. Will easily get into 20 plus events.

Still not a word on RTE app, if McIlroy was having a cut off Greg Norman they'd have an article up for the clicks instantly.

Excuse my ignorance here but what does having a tour card entitle you to? I thought it would get you into x amount of tournaments?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭paulos53

There are well over 200 players with tour cards but only room for 144 in most events. So it all comes down to a players ranking which is based on their exemption category.

Hurley and Murphy will be ranked around 180-200. So they are relying on 50 or 60 higher ranked players to not enter the events that they want to play in. This is not a problem most weeks but they will find it tough to get a game on the weeks that the American based players want to play on the DP tour

A hole in one today for Tom McKibbin. That helped him shoot a 67 and he is currently 2 off the lead.

The DP World Tour and PGA TOUR jointly announced today a new landmark partnership with the Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO) that will see the top three players on the JGTO Order of Merit earn membership onto the DP World Tour for the ensuing season, beginning with the 2022-23 campaign.

Possibly more relaxed rules on Sunshine tour in hot conditions, happened a few years back as well on co hosted event in SA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,637 ✭✭✭joebloggs32

One to watch has to be Tom McKibbin.

Still a teenager and had top 20s in his first two events and made the cut again this week.

A solid start to life on tour for the young man. It would be great to have another Irish star competing at the top.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,741 ✭✭✭Dr. Bre

Another one to watch is Christian Mass from South Africa. He’s also 19 and is currently top ten in this weeks event . Still an amateur .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,637 ✭✭✭joebloggs32

Great closing round from McKibbin today shooting 6 under. Should be another top 20. For his first 3 events he has performed remarkably consistently. He has taken a bit of pressure off himself heading into 2023 with early points on the board.

A decent week thouh not spectacular from Hurley, currently around T30. A few €€€€ in the bank will make the Christmas turkey taste a little nicer.

2023 could be a massive year for Irish golf fans. Quite possibly 3 players in the Ryder cup team and new emerging talent to get behind, while Leona will likely be competing too for major honours.

The Rory comparisons are going to get tiresome for the lad. He alright hits it a mile for a young skinny fella. I'll be interested to see if he gets big into the S&C stuff and how it turns out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,637 ✭✭✭joebloggs32

Another cut comfortably made for McKibbin and Gary Hurley also well up there. Great for them to get early points on the board.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,741 ✭✭✭Dr. Bre

    Hurley finished tied 14th

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,099 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

What kind of money would that bag him?

He's definitely improved alot in the last 12 months for whatever reason, maybe a late bloomer and could become a mainstay on the European tour.

Didn't realise Harrington was playing this week. He's lighting it up today, -6 thru 14, -9 overall. 3 shots off the lead.

Lowry just holed out for eagle from 150 yards to go -10. Power has struggled to kick on from his opening round he's -6.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,478 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Harrington 5 birdies in a row, up to -10 and 1 off lead, same as Lowry

Edit: lowry birdie so joint lead

Edit 2: 6 in a row for Padraig, also joint lead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭big_drive

Be great for tomorrow to have Lowry & Harrington both up at top of leaderboard, make it interesting

Harrington is playing some golf since he's hit 50

The distance he's got is seriously impressive for his age. In that video he gets the second longest carry, beating guys half his age

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,426 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Coverage of Harrington is very poor. With all the technology these days you think they'd be able to switch up their plan when someone comes out of the pack like this.

Ireland v Italy at the top of the leaderboard. Harrington, Lowry, Molinari, Migliozzi all on -11.

Harrington is some man! I'm sure he's an inspiration to many but particularly to any golfer who's pushing on in years.

That shot by Perez is probably one of the best I've seen. Worthy of winning any tournament

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,498 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

Perez holes out from the bunker on 17 to seal it. I’d bet good money he caught that a bit closer to the ball than intended!

Patrick Reed rule infraction coming again I think. Ball stuck in a tree on 17, he identifies ball...looks like its in a different tree though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,958 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

Don't know if poor sound from Sky ...but bizarre dead atmosphere even at 18....more like golf a side thing...

Tricky one for the tour I think. TBH I'm torn between: he was told by a marshal on the spot that it was that tree, so was pre-conditioned to look for a ball with his marking, and lots of people mark their ball in a similar way and it's through binoculars, versus nah, you'd know your own ball mark for God's sake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,478 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Yeah thought that myself, he wasn't going to know it was in a tree, let alone which one. Don't think that'll be a saving grace though if he was to be booted

Wallace, 32, is said to have told a group of reporters in Dubai:

"He said to me he uses only Titleist [ProV1] 3s with a red dot and a black line and that is the last I am going to say on it."

However Reed told the official that he marked his golf ball with a black line with an arrow.

Just to put DP Tour win at the weekend into perspective, Rors got 29.49 ranking points, PGA tour winner got 47.06

  • Registered Users Posts: 258 ✭✭eireyiddo

Think Rory took home more $$$$$$ tho. Slightly bigger prize purse plus the wedge he gets just to turn up

That might need a bit of rebalancing. I hope the DP World tour grows and competes better with the PGA Tour. I wonder would allowing LIV golfers enter more competitions spice it up a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,938 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

When is this court ruling coming as regards the players off the tour sponsored by murdering anti-women's and anti-lgbtqia rights being allowed to compete on this tour? I am not watching it while they are playing on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,914 ✭✭✭Russman

That's interesting/damning if true. Was Wallace playing with him when it happened ?

I dunno I don't really buy the whole "golf needs a villain bla bla" that I've seen in a few recent articles. For sure it can deal with guys who are simply d1cks, there's plenty of those, but if someone crosses the line to actual cheating, then I don't think golf wants that. The locker room will know anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,914 ✭✭✭Russman

If its the issue with the DP World Tour & LIV, then the arbitration hearing is Feb 6-10 I think. Its not an actual court hearing though afaik, whereas in the US its actual court cases. From what I've briefly read though its nothing to do with Saudi involvement (good or bad), its to do with the the tour's regulations around conflicting events and the enforcement of those regulations. The panel will be a few weeks mulling it over after the hearing. Mind you, I'll still watch the golf regardless, even if I've no interest in most of the LIV players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,159 ✭✭✭benny79

I was actually decussing this with a mate He likes LIV and sees nothing wrong with it. I however hate it. Anyway he did make an interesting point that the DP tour needs the LIV guys as you will have the likes of DJ, Cam, Brooks and maybe even Phil all playing the DP tour for owgr points which they normally wouldn't play in and this will only help boost the DP tour.. Although I really dont agree with it I see his point. He even thinks that the DP tour powers at be will be secretly hoping to lose the court case for that reason alone.
