I went to see the new Super League fella, Bernd Reichart, speak at the web summit a few weeks ago, and while they've clearly taken a huge step back after their failed launch, this was the main reason he was confident that sooner or later, there will be another player outside the existing football structures. That business as it's been done across Europe at the top level (aside from the PL) is simply a total failure, so it's just a matter of time.

To be honest he wasn't entirely convincing that they'd be the ones to replace it, but his underlying point about much of European football being pretty untenable as it's currently run was pretty hard to argue with.

I feel that the failure of the Super League last year will eventually be seen as a bit of a sliding doors moment, once City and Newcastle have finished in the top two for upwards of 5 years in a row.

Is it the lesser of two evils? Could very well be. The top level football we all know and love isn’t going to exist as we know it in the not too distant future either way, so what really is the least worst option?

Well the German league is only a one team league and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

The French league is a one team league bar an odd team winning every couple of years

Spain will be a one horse league going forward unless Barca can find more money down the back if the couch

Italy seems the most balanced of all the leagues right now after Juve blew there load signing Ronnie and the other high waged players to try and win the Champions League

The premier league will be City & Newcastle going forward unless Liverpool and Man U are bought by owners prepared to match the spending of Nation States. Chelsea’s new owner definitely wants a Super League, Spurs and Arsenal will follow that lead

The Super League and new federation will eventually arrive when the owners decide that UEFA & FIFA isn’t benefiting them and is actually hurting there profit margins.

The Glazers would sell to Satan if he offered the most. So would FSG. It’s about money.

Liverpool and Utd’s fan base will want to keep their place at the top. And it’s getting harder and harder. You wont make money competing against the Sportswashing clubs. No wonder Pep is staying….where would he go that he has it so handy and can escape the type of pressure he’d get at Real or Barca?

And for what it’s worth, the only thing that will keep the PL someday sane will be the rules that the clubs set themselves for entry into it. And if they make them too stringent, it will play into the hands of the Super League.

I would be totally shocked if Liverpool ends up state owned, i can't see it happing , the fans won't have it,

United in my opinion are more likely to go down that road mainly because the current owners are more likely to sell to the highest bidder regardless of the fans ,

Would United fans be for or against it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,306 ✭✭✭✭Drumpot

Totally against sportswashing owners. I’m finding it hard to see how I can continue being a fan of a club like that.

The EPL is now the league of choice for corruption. They let clubs be used as Rich peoples toys to use as they please or worse still to launder away atrocities.

Club ownership “Fit and proper” test my ass, its about as stringent as a “fit and proper test” policy to take the word of accused paedos if they promise not to keep abusing while giving them a job taking care of children.

It's difficult one isn't it because you can be a fan of a club & hate the ownership .

As a Liverpool fan id prefer to win the odd trophy here & there than to be state owned by someone from a murderous regime,

Plus the kicker is even if you are state owned its still going to be ridiculous hard to win things, seen as City & Newcastle will also be around in the Prem & them in Europe Bayer , Madrid , PSG will still be as good as ever,

United for example have spent as much as any of those sides without being state owned, I know there ownership has been a mess but you the right owners the money is there to compete. Even as a Liverpool the respect for United is there & i wouldn't like to see them sell out i don't think they need to , I love the stat they have with one home grown academy player in each squad for about 50 years that's something everyone should aim for ,

Where is the joy in supporting success at a club who is winning ONLY so an owner can try to take the focus off other dodgy sh*t they are doing?

I also resent kind of supporting Liverpool over city in the league. That’s a corruption of sporting rivalry that’s a result of sportswashing. I should not ever want Liverpool to win anything (out of good old fashioned healthy rival begrudgery) but f*k city and psg and Newcastle.

Like you said, I respect how Liverpool have achieved success and it means more to me then anything the sportswashed clubs have done. As sh*te the glazers are as owners, at least they don’t have human rights abuse accusations against their name, they are a step up from that so as such they are unfortunately a more suitable owner for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,954 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

I agree there is a healthy rivalry but a fair one ,

Also why part of me would love to see Arsenal win the league over City ,

Do you honestly think that if a group came in and offered significantly more than other bidders Henry would care what fans thought?

No more than the Glazers, FSG are a business. The only difference is that FSG reinvested club generated money back into the club whereas the Glazers took annual dividends and leveraged United against their other business interests to prop them up. They will want to maximise their return on investment considering they have taken nothing from the club. It is naïve in the extreme to think that they will give two shiny shytes what Liverpool fans think if a full sale is the end game, they will never have to deal with them again so what possible reason would they have to listen to them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,954 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

    I honestly can't see it happing , i really can't ,

Maybe as you say im being Naïve but i think FSG will show a duty of care to the club ,I also think they will have a enough interest that they need to do it,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,324 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

FSG showed a duty of care when they had an interest in the health of the club. If there are 2 offers one for 1Billion and one for 2Billion they are taking the extra Billion, they'd be mad not to. What happens after will be of very little interest to them.

Just like Utd you can only hope the best offer is not a state funded sports washing offer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,954 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Not sure where people get this pie in the sky idea that a state funded groups would offer a Billion more than anyone else,They didn't get that rich by being stupid,

If Liverpool get multiple bids they will be in a very similar price range

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭doc_17

Every part of me wants to see Arsenal beat City of those are the only two choices!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Reading today that Qatar are looking for investment in PSG so maybe they are getting ready to get out of football now the World Cup is finally there and nearly over.

The Saudis are bidding for the 2030 so they will be around for awhile no doubt.

Maybe Qatar want into the premier league instead of the French league now.

I guess Chelsea are only team that need a striker, ie Ronaldo. Sterling on the left, Pierre on the right, Ronaldo center.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,013 ✭✭✭djan

Not sure about Sterling but Auba and Ronaldo playing together effectively means being 2 players down when defending.

Rice pretty much saying in the England presser today that he will leave West Ham

No West Ham fan is surprised and no one would begrudge him leaving. He's never sulked or downed tools even though we've been poor this season. Barring us getting into the Champions League this season, he was always going to move on in the summer. He'll always be held in high regard every time he returns.

Has stayed long enough to ensure the club get a passive pay-day out of it too.

How are Brighton fans meant to get to Newcastle for a 12.30 kick off? It's a 6 hour drive!

BT are rumoured to want to stop showing football as it's costing them so much, with little return. They have low viewing figures. Sky's output & coverage is poor compared to the money they charge too.

A dedicated PL streaming service can't come soon enough. It will open up so many new opportunities for clubs too.

So Ronaldo done a 90 minute interview bitching about standards & wanting to play at the highest level , claiming the manger & club that have held him back & the goes to join Al Nassr ,

    WTF

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭blackwave

No one wants to touch him after that interview and his high wage demands. Least he can claim he's the best footballer in the country which will appease his ego.

He'll be decent backup for Aboubacar

Spurs after the break could be a very exciting team if Conte takes a few lessons from the World Cup and changes to a more attacking style.

    Could field a midfield and forward line of;

    ------------Richarlison

    ---Son-------Kane------Kulusevski

    -------Hojbjerg---Bentancur

Ronnie is not about football, hasn't been dir quite a while in fact. Its all showbiz!

During the Portogal game this evening, the cameras kept cutting to him and the crowd cheered every time he moved off the bench. There are lots of fans, especially younger kids and people from outside traditional areas, that 'support' and follow players more than teams, and Ronaldo and Messi definitely fall into that category.

His move to Saudi has nothing to do with football, it's all about PR for both him and the Saudi state as they prepare to host the World Cup in 30/34.

BT have joined forces with Warner Brothers who also own Eurosport so they could be something happening with that.

Bournemouth have been taken over in a deal worth £100m by an American consortium which included Michael B Jordan.
