Well he opened the black rooster, a few doors up, closing it down after about 2 months, only to open it up under a different name but shocking service I believe. He also opened the ice cream coffee place and that's closed down. Word on the street is that he is not being given credit from local suppliers.

I was excited to try it having seen the queues and watched them on tv, but the chicken I got had lots of grizzly fatty bits, so I'm out. Shame as the bun and sauce was delish, but I can't stand grizzly fatty chicken. €9 too.

Heading down to cork early January , have already reserved market lane for a Wednesday night and now looking to do somewhere on the Thursday. We both like Italian or a good steak. Da Micro is probably too fancy for us. What about il Padrino?? Been to gallo and galetti twice before and it was good but want a change. Or a good steakhouse? Thanks.

I find Poulet Vous way too sweet and sloppy.

The food menu in The Raven looks nice and good value. Any opinions here?

I was there around this time last year. The food was very good. Not exceptional, but still very good.

Mabel Lane is very popular for food. Yes there was a bit of pushback from some locals who were refused service but 90% of people are happy they're keeping the place in check and keeping the riff raff out. They're doing very well, especially for lunch and dinner trade, but it's hard to tell in this climate how any bar/restaurant is doing as costs are so high.

Sounds like an interesting story. Do tell us more, please.

Its nice, small enough portions but enough. They also have hands down the best Beamish in Cork so its a regular haunt for me while herself eats!!

Da Mirco isn’t fancy, it’s very nice, but definitely not posh or intimidating. I’d say reconsider putting it back on your list 😁

elbow lane us the best for steak in the city in my opinion, way fancier than Da Mirco though.

Yes! the Raven food is good stuff! They have a delicious scotch egg with fennel in it. The French dip is yum, a beef sandwich with chips that you dunk in a bowl of onion gravy.

Agree with this, Da Mirco is well worth a trip. Different to any Italian restaurants I've been to in Ireland, much smaller menu but everything there is really good. They make their own pasta etc and the owner/manager (Mirco) is very friendly.

Is yuan ming yang still the best and most authentic Chinese in the city? I've never been.

I'd like to go somewhere nice for my birthday but really don't want to eat regular Chinese greasy salty gooey muck. I've heard great things about this place and would like to taste some authentic stuff.

As a blow in, local "institutions" are always a let down. I don't have those nostalgic memories of going to yang Ming yuan with mammy when i was a child.

So, is it ACTUALLY top class or is it just one of those institutions?

I was a big fan for a long time but some years ago they changed their chef and I think the quality dipped significantly and all my favourite dishes were dropped. I don't go anymore.

Having said that, it is the only Chinese I know of in Cork that offers stuff outside of the typical European Chinese restaurant menu and it's not like it's terrible or anything. It's still the only I know of with a dim sum menu, even if it's not as good as it was.

I'd give the same advice as @the beer revolu JC, YMY is not as good as it once was, but still worth visiting to avoid the usual fare that Chinese takeaways sell. Check out the lamb curry or sticky/crispy lamb, if they still sell them. You might have to ask for the Dim Sum menu.

And yeah, most local Cork "institutions" are rubbish IMO. YMY was never like that though, we used to go to Tung Sing with the family back in the day... definitely avoid there.

I hope you have a great birthday, regardless of where you choose to go! 👍️

Riff raff, I'm intrigued! Tell me more.

Because several people I know who were refused were punters of an older generation, who I guess didn't fit the trendy young and fit 20 something crew that there trying to bring in as trade.

Oh, they'll take them for lunch trade, but as for a pint at night? No, not regulars then.

I know of a few students who took part time work there and have since left, maybe they were riff raff too!

I read that as being Market Lane rather than Mable Lane when it was originally posted. Now it makes more sense - hard to imagine Market Lane profiling customers.

Bouncers being bouncers. Bad ego driven door staff can really kill a venue. You'll fill it on the weekend but you might struggle midweek because of all the people you alienated!

Riff raff as in young lads coked off their heads starting fights like you'd see out the back of the Stables the odd time. A few places in Carrigaline have tried to re-invent themselves over the years with over 21s or over 23s policies but could never stick to it as they didn't commit to having door men. Any teething problems Mabel Lane had regarding denial of service in the first few weeks seems to have died down a long time ago

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,031 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Still Google review complaints about door staff from 3 to 4 weeks ago. Hardly a long time, really.

Deciding who is going to be a trouble maker based on what kind of shoes a potential customer is wearing is ridiculous and out dated.

Also you can't read anything about the place without hearing that they spent €4 million on the place. 4 million, don't you know! It's extremely tacky carry on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭notAMember

Yuan ming yuan is a good chinese, but they went down the road of pleasing most of the public, which is far easier for them! The default now is the european chinese menu they give to all westerners.

They still had a dim sum menu up to the end of last year at least (I haven't been in 2022), and that is well worth trying out. The dumplings and steamed buns are great, they had a taro dumpling too (wu gok?), not sure if it's still there. And chicken feet if you're up for that. There are specials, I remember a baked scallops dish being amazing. I've gone there and just had dim sum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,351 ✭✭✭limnam

Dim sum is still an option, you just need to ask for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭notAMember

Are the wu gok still on it do you know? Remembering them now is giving me a small craving. :)

I think lads coked out of their heads 'the odd time' (which can happen anywhere) is hardly justification to stop middle aged couples of entering a premises. They want the certain look in that place, and tbh, regardless of the size of Carrigaline, it's still a village, still a well knit community, and people don't forget. It says it all that the owners won't be given credit in the area. Tells a lot.

Tbh I wouldn't be rating the Stables in any sort of way, that place is in a league of its own, and not in a good way!!
