Digging this up as I consider the season over…

    1. Yup, all of 4 times
    2. Nope, lost by a point.
    3. Nope
    4. 20.1
    5. Yup

Very happy overall. Player of the year with local society with wins on 3 outings (I seem to like away courses vs home club), decent HC drop. Gutted re last putt of the “friendly” comp.

Didn't set actual goals for myself in 2022, but had some slight ones

    Anyhow:

    Starting WHS Index: 8.9

    Ending WHS Index: 6.9

Club comps - Nothing too major, but 2nd place in 'Free Sub' year-end comp (+3 Gross) which provided me with €150 off membership for next year. That was my round of the year, which coincided nicely for that comp

    • Yes, Handicap is lower. At lowest ever currently, 6.4
    • No, probabky didn't really improve here overall
    • Yes, broke 80 at least 5 times I think, including lowest ever gross, +2
    • Yes, just about, at Bayhill
    • Yes, just about, at Sawgrass (hit green and parred 17)
    • Won 2 boards events in a row, Greystones and Dundrum
    • Made Jug team, but lost our match
    • Won a couple of class prizes, but no overall wins at home
    • Won our winter matchplay so an over-performance there
    • Hit the last target easily, great year of enjoyable golf

    1. Not achieved, have played very little golf unfortunately. Out to 5.5
    2. Went to Portugal and played 4 rounds. Highlight of the year. probably where I played my best golf
    3. Not even close
    4. Even further away!!!
    5. Had one lesson at start of the year that looked promising but life got in the way and hadn't the time to continue
    6. She's still putting up with me. Child no.2 has arrived though so need to keep earning brownie points for golf in 2023

    66% success rate.

    Only played 13 counting rounds.

However, not only did I keep to single figures but my handicap went down almost a full shot. So overall, very happy with my season.

Off topic I know…Sawgrass. I have opportunity to play there (travel to the locality for work) but always put off by the cost and my relatively crap golf. Question is: is it worth the $s and did you book it through sawgrass or some other way?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,104 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

we stayed there. It was all booked through a golf tour package. I believe if you want to play the course, you most likely have to stay on site. Bayhill was same.

We didn't really notice the cost because it was bundled together with the rest of the trip....... but is it worth it..... hell yes... i was was to do it again, and i think Space will agree with me, we stayed the night before, but we should have stayed an extra night also.

Just don't do what I did and get pissed the night before 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,104 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

    Hmmmmm

did I practice?.... not really, a small bit here and there, but no is the honest answer.

Handicap...... I'm an even bigger bandit as proven recently

Nowhere near boards golfer of the year... but i probably could have competed if I played a few more of the events

came second in one boards outing

    won boards past captains cup

made jug team, won jug match

    second in a club medal

    got a 2 on the 17th at Sawgrass 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,687 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

    Seve covered it off.

It's really worth it. Course is spectacular, and no real snobbyness about the place. Cool clubhouse and warm up facilities.

Think i saw someone complaining on Twitter that currently it's around $840 for a 4-ball.

We also had to take a fore-caddy in each group. Cost split 4 ways, but worth remembering it as a potential extra cost

As i got older my handicap went up and my enjoyment went down. Now after a few weeks of doing nothing but practicing my chipping and putting I feel a bit more confident especially around the greens. My drives have got shorter but at least i'm hitting the fairways.

My goals for 2023 are to get at least 5/6 pars per round and stop the double bogeys or worse so that I can enjoy the game a bit more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭coillcam

    1. Achieved for the most part: I did plenty of short-game work but not quite as much putting. Got lessons in both which really helped particularly a set putting stroke and a couple of key drills for gauging pace/speed and keeping the ball on the intended line.
    2. Not achieved but I dropped to 11.6 and hold this until next season.
    3. Not achieved but I did record a new pb of 83 (prev 84). Quite confident I'll break 80 next year.
    4. Achieved. Towards the end of the season, it all came together. All of my counting rounds are now in the 80s.
    5. Achieved. Lots of rounds with 2 birdies.
    6. Not achieved. I did add a couple of new holes to the list but still a number of holes outstanding for next year.
    7. Achieved. Still too many doubles on most weeks 😀.
    8. Not achieved. I did get a stand bag but I didn't use it often enough tbf.
    9. Not achieved. Sorry but I'm a new gear pervert like most of us. I didn't buy any new clubs but I did get a couple of used ones.
    10. Not achieved. Had options but I didn't take them.
    11. Not achieved. Changed job and lost my bank of AL. Probably won't have the chance next year either.
    12. Kinda achieved. Won PGA tankard (secondary comp on a Sunday). Also called a 2-shot penalty on myself in another comp where I finished ultimately finished 2nd - don't ask but it was a great lesson.
    13. Not achieved. I did make the final round in all of the majors I entered.
    14. Achieved. Played interclub mixed and entered club matchplay comps.
    15. Achieved. No covid meant more chances to socialize. Definitely had more craic on the course and enjoyed the process to practice/lessons to get better. The matchplay comps were a great time to meet someone different and often followed up with a couple of pints or coffee.

    Extras of note:

    1. Made my first eagle which was a hole out from 60 yards on par 4.
    2. Won the club long handicap matchplay comp. Recorded a pb in the final match which inluded 1st-time birdie on a tough hole and reached a tough par 5 in two also for the first time. I did 3-putt it like most of my other eagle chances 😂.
    3. I really have an appreciation for how important golf is for some people. I'm not talking about playing your best or winning.

For point 3 above, I can say that golf is much more than just a game to play. A lot of the senior members don't have a massive amount of outlets for fun and socialising. Eg. kids have grown up and they are also now retired from work. Golf offers them a fantastic little community and weekly outlet. Not to mention regular exercise. There are always committees or little jobs in the club that they can assist with too.

I'll have a think about next year's goals over the coming weeks. The main one will be to break 80 and drop to single figures.

    1) I have improved at this range but more to do.

    2) I have improved here greatly too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭gypsy79

    1. Success, finished at 16.8 and definitely would have went much lower if Sep and Oct weather wasnt so bad
    2. My secondary injuries cleared up for summer, this is really from now on to give me a chance to get off flyer for 2023
    3. Failed, was at 20.8 in May and was 20.4 in July
    4. Finally got a lesson in late August, feel a lot more confident but i will still put whenever I can (fluked a hole out on Saturday)
    5. New irons got, with wedges and 5w. Didnt do it early enough. I think part of the reason I was still in 20s in July was I had no idea how far they went (maybe some practice next year). They go a lot further, like 30 yards further for a 7 iron (125-130) to (150-165)
    6. Still weakest part but getting better, shafts in old irons were way too heavy causing the issues (maybe practice on range)

I would probably say it was an enjoyable, but mostly unsuccessful year of golf for me. I think a lot of my goals were not that realistic looking back, considering my golfing time is still fairly limited with a young daughter, play I'm still 50+ mins from my club, and practicing isn't really doable. Max of 1 round per week most times, and that's if i got the 1 per week.

    • Driving is still a mess, and still costs me 5-10 points per round.
    • Dropped .5 to 12.5, so not even close to getting single digits.
    • 83 was my best round this year, with a few rounds starting extremely well but failing away due to stupid mistakes.
    • Didn't win any competitions this year, and longest drive in our presidents was the only thing i managed.
    • No matchplay events this year, one was cancelled due to a death in the club, and was only reserve for the other.
    • There was no qualification for the Captains, so i technically made it this year 🤣
    • Fell just shy of the jug, will get that next year.
    • Daughter took all my money this year, so haven't changed anything in my bag.
    • Played some great courses with the boards soc, with Headfort probably being my favourite.
    • And i lost my shotscope charger mid year, so that didn't work 😆

Still been enjoying it though, and had a great time on the boards society outings as usual. Can't wait for that to start again next year.

Mixed bag for me this year golf wise. Didn't play as much as last year due to baby arriving in late August so missed a good portion of the calendar, typically play my best golf in August/September but barely played during that time but can't complain as hit some of my goals.

    1. Not quite, 3 rounds in the 70s and an 80.
    2. Done, off 7.6 now thanks to a good run of rounds around the 80 mark that replaced some higher counting scores.
    3. Done, also got a putter fitting which has allowed me to commit to my current putter as it was ideal for me anyway so a win/win
    4. Done, got fit in March for P790s.
    5. Didn't play a single event, initial outings just didn't suit and as the due date for the baby got closer i just didn't have the time.
    6. Played 2 but they were in my dads club so not really what I had in mind.
    7. Done, some interesting stuff in there but no great surprises. Bad driving is still what kills my rounds, if i'm in play i do well
    8. K Club was only fancy course i got to this year but hope to try get more in next year.

I never got to write down my goals this year, main one was just to keep playing golf and do well in the Boards GOTY and make the Jug team!!

Like most of us, we want to get our handicaps down and I managed that - dropped from a high of 18.6 to 16.1 and if I had a few more qualifying rounds I reckon I could have dropped a bit more.

Looking at the Golf Ireland app at the start of the year and I had to go back nearly 3 years to the first of my 20 counting rounds so I set a target to beat that and i did significantly - I've played 22 counting rounds and several interclub practice rounds.

I wanted to practice more and achieved this too. Happy how the year turned out.

I played 37 counting rounds and a good few casual rounds that I didn't record for various reasons. Started season on 14.9, went out to 16.4 by July but came back in to 13.6 at the end. Some good scores in mid-80s and minor prize wins. I had 1 eagle and lots of birdies.

I got 3 lessons over the season on iron play and I'm striking it much better now. Also did a good bit of mixed practice most weeks.

I'm way more consistent and have way fewer really bad rounds. I really enjoy going out to play now and realize that there will be days when I'll get the breaks and sink the putts but also days that I won't.

As regards goal setting, I'm happy enough with just getting consistent quality in my shots at the moment and seeing what drops out of that in terms of measurables like GIR, lack of scratches/doubles, birdie/eagle count, wins, HI reduction etc.

    1. Yes and working hard on it over winter
    2. Yes have much improved have a good technique just need to keep practising on it
    3. Did get down to 15.9 lowest ever but sadly crept back up but had a good result in last qualifying round of season & dropped nearly a shot. Finished on 17.3
    4. Won 2 and came second in 2 medals!
    5. No 3rd was my best and winning the fairway finder 😁 Sadly didnt make the team either

Over all I played loads of golf and had a great golfing year with some unbelievable dreams achieved. It will be hard to ever top this year golf wise! I had 2 of the best golfing holidays of my life with truly great people who are definitely friends for Life.

My only disappointment was my clubs I play with blades (as some lads know 😁) I shot the round of my life with them at the end of Feb nett 78 but unfortunately didnt break 90 once over the whole season after. I have since found out (as I went to a professional club fitter) that I was fitted all wrong for them my 7I was spinning at 10,000 rpm.. Typical 🙄 but I wasn't custom fit for them and didnt know much about the tech side of things, I do now 😂 I was hitting good shots but ball was going nowhere! and I taught it was my swing! But I learned a lot. One is I have a great athletic swing and I definitely dont need as many lessons as I have been getting (1 a month last few years sometimes 2!) To have more confidence in me and my game. I have a lend of a good mates clubs just for a couple of weeks and shot an 85 last Sunday and won the comp and that was dying with the flu.

All that said I am investing in new irons custom fit which aren't cheap! but fcuk it Life is short and I going to hit 2023 hard.

This is a good thread. It's strange looking back at how I expected things to pan out and how they actually did.

So did I break 36 points in a competition? Not in club comps, but I only got to play in 3, so I didn't give myself much of a chance. I didn't list it as a goal, but I was hoping to make a couple of boards outings this year and was delighted to make three and disappointed to not make more. And in these I broke 36 points twice, and would have a third time I think were it not for the handicap adjustment.

Improving my swing was the big goal since and I think it's improving. My strike doesn't feel as solid as it did, but my misses are narrowing. I'm basically having fewer wild pulls and slices. I still have them! But a few fewer. I didn't get to the range a whole lot - maybe half a dozen times in the year. So a lot of the improvement was just trying to do it on the course. And that's why the strike isn't as solid as I'd like.

As regards handicap - I got to play 16 times this year and will hopefully get another before Christmas. I submitted 13 of those cards and my handicap dropped 5.3 shots. Importantly, I've increased the gap between my brothers in law! I said I didn't feel like a higher handicap golfer even though that's the way it was going and I'm wondering if that actually is the case. I played 10 away rounds this year and dropped just over half a shot per round (none of the home rounds are counting). I think I played better last year but I also think I mainly needed rounds on more normal courses to get the handicap back in check. Some of those rounds that have decent score differentials were very ordinary in my view.

All eyes on you next year bluenote. Looking forward to getting a round in with you hopefully. The course list is going to suit you I think.

    1) Was a strange year of golf ...brilliant golf trips and a very enjoyable year as captain of BGS ...but my personal ambition for my game were somewhat secondary to the various golf trip I was on or actually organising. So from an enjoyability perspective...went perfect.

    2) handicap went up this year ...but somewhat held 6...not particularly convincingly...but hung in there

    3) had a 75 ...a great round of golf and could have been lower....but I'm still a good bit away from getting near par...too many wild shots and a poor short game from 90 in...not sure where to go next on that ...but hope is there.. somewhere...

    4) Had 4 eagles ...including a hole in 1 ...so that was epic stuff...interesting that my eagles are sort of hole outs now ...I don't really have the distance for conventional eagles...

    5) I love Donegal and North and this year got Waterville in..I truly am on the final run of Links a good 10 year challenge...

    6) I had 1 decent outing ...but I probably underestimated how much of my focus would be non club golf...I'll play way more club golf in 2023.

    7) Got to final ...but had a poor day at the wrong time and was outplayed by Space...I'll be tougher to beat in 2023...

    8) I actually had a decent run in BGS at the start of year...but there was scoring I wouldn't have a hope of getting near...won a Gross ...all that counts (joke) (kinda)

Overall probably best year of golf experiences as opposed to golf quality...there probably is a greater lesson in that for me than I have fully appreciated at this stage.......

But ...I think I'd like to start playing better golf in 2023 ...and have started working on it early this year....hopefully that par round will come in 2023....

  • Registered Users Posts: 372 ✭✭Break80

    1. Got close a few times my best was 81.

    2. Actually won on The Monty on a tough day in March.

    3. Even with the win failed to make the team. We played some fabulous courses but my society golf was nothing short of embarrassing. I need to redeem myself big time next year.

    4. Not there yet but dropped from 14.5 to 11.5. Finished at 12.3. Ironically played some steady club golf but absolute muck with the society.

    5. Got to The States for the most enjoyable golf trip of my life. Loved every minute of the whole week in the company of some great characters.

Only 2 goals for next year. I think if I manage them everything else should follow suit.

    1. Break 80.

    2. Improve my society performance which should be easy after last year's shite.

  • Registered Users Posts: 348 ✭✭frink

    1. Finished up at 4.0 so just about kept it within target. Hadn't played in a year and new club so happy to stay in that zone
    2. Shot 71 on a par 70 and then a 73 on a 72 (3 putt on the last) so was new target now is to shoot level par
    3. Achieved
    4. Not achieved, wasn't playing well enough around team season to be in with a selection
    5. Part achieved, damaged a shoulder so parked the strength work for a few months
    6. In height of summer, I did a lot of short game every week. Lack of range in the area where I live now impeding practice long game. Thankfully club is adding a range so that'll help when it opens

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,633 ✭✭✭willabur

from my top 8 scores in golf ireland they are 72-74. So I have been okay. My last 5 counting rounds have been bad though, over 82 each of them which means my handicap of 7.8 could almost double if I don't start putting in some decent cards. Injury was a factor this year again. Hard to get consistency when you have a body made out of matchsticks

I blame focusing on match play golf. Haven't had chance to enter the comps when I was playing well.

Birdie challenge is interesting, the lack of tournament play means I am probably not going to achieve this. I have 12 of 18 so far. Birdied all off the back 9. 3 on the front, I reckon I have the other 6 covered in matchplay but doesn't count in my challenge

most disappointing thing was the lack of interclubs. Just not getting much of a look in this year. I dropped too low for teams I was on last year which explains it a bit. Disappointing though because it is the best thing about playing

Didn't make it to Donegal but I did make it back to Carne.... Heaven

  • Registered Users Posts: 557 ✭✭✭Gipo3

    No. Finished at 8.1

No. 7+ was best this year

Yes. X2 best was semi final

    Yes. 2nd overall

No. Did with Winter rules so not counting!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,291 ✭✭✭slingerz

Had a poor year really. 40pts & 8th place best finish in my home club. Won away comp with 39pts in poor weather though. Handicap stayed steady though and played some enjoyable Purcell matches.

family has grown considerably so perhaps 2 under 2 isn’t conducive to good golf.

    for 2023

    1. enjoy golf, didn’t enjoy it much last year, the vagaries of the new handicap system had me vexed and didn’t get the some competitive buzz from comps.
    2. break 80 consistently, want to have my top 8 scores all under 80
    3. forget about the cost and just enjoy every second of my St Andrews trip!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,729 ✭✭✭dan_ep82

I played more until the end of the year and definitely practiced less than I should have. Most of that was out of my control but still. Just play regular next year if I can , once a week a the minute isn’t guaranteed , had a 6 week break with a new baby and the weather isn’t great for it.

Still enjoyed the year that I was, I’ve enjoyed seeing the progression of ElGuapo

The biggest win for me this year was starting to enjoy the game again, even on bad days. I was in a very bad rut coming out of 2021, but a short break and time spent on lessons got me 3.6 off my handicap after going up 2 the year before. Having a pro identify body limitations and creating a feasible work around rather than having a model swing made all the difference.

    • win the gold medal (came close last year) - lost a monthly medal on countback (shudder)
    • Win a scratch cup - not even close - think I played in 1
    • Feature in prizes in Captains Prize - didn't get to play due to work
    • Would love to say play on one of the club teams but I'm afraid family commitments will prevent this over the next few years - was asked to play on two teams but had to refuse - family and work commitments

My year was decent overall, had a tough period where my handicap drifted up almost 2 shots but I finished the year very strongly and my HI is now 5.4 - around a shot lower than the start of the year

Ultimately, I didn't play as much competition golf as I wanted to, and I played a lot of casual golf and golf on my own which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Nursing an Achillies tendon tear at the moment so will be a long time before I can get back to the course - bright side is its probably the best time to be injured although I wouldn't wish it on anybody
