The Born and ID3 are the same car underneath. The Born is just an ID3 in a fancier frock.

    The Cupra Born?

    it’s an ID.3 with Cupra styling/badges…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,712 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Apologies, I misread the earlier post and though you were referring to a Renault ZOE.

Cupra Born looks much better than an ID.3 especially the interior. Only obvious advantage to an ID.3 is a more extensive dealer network but given EV’s don’t really need much in the way of servicing, it’s probably not really important.

The main drawback is that Cupra are even slower with the software updates than VW. I think they're still a full version behind the ID.3, which itself is far from optimal

There's also a problem of availability. VW have mostly been meeting delivery targets by hollowing out Cupra, Audi and Skoda production. Should be getting better as a lot of the bottlenecks seem to be solved, but the main focus will probably be on VW for a while

VW seeing good demand and ahead of sales targets for EVs, a result predicted by absolutely everybody who drives an EV

Doesn't seem to include the group sales, so total MEB sales likely higher, although the majority of production is from VW at the moment

To clarify the title, VW has delivered 500,000 ID cars overall since the ID.3, not 500,00 per year. Still lagging behind Tesla's 900,000 cars in 2022

Also looks like production is going well despite shortages and price increases, order book for 2023 has 135,000 orders

I wonder if we'll hit a million IDs by 2024?

Eamonn is the one politician that could make an "I have a dream" speech. God knows he sleeps enough

As long as he doesn't do a 'Sweden', I don't mind what targets he sets for himself.

Was there anything worth watching in the video? Can't stand listening to Eamonn Ryan or any other politician speaking

They're probably revising the EV target downwards and telling us to cycle

Which would be fine in Dublin if they'd install some proper cycling infrastructure outside of Dun Laoghaire

Posted last week about my long trip Dublin to Antrim in the Cupra...anyway yesterday's very mild weather led me doing the trip up there with average usage of 15.5 kwh per 100km meaning I arrived at my destination 205km away from home with 45% battery left. Some of journey in ROI at 120kmph but mostly around 100-110 to be honest. So full range would have been just shy of 400 if I kept going and everything stayed consistent.

Found a charger near me and plugged in this morning and topped up to 100%. Colder day today and drove home a bit quicker more time at 120kmph plus a bit of traffic stop start driving in Belfast and Dublin m50 and was well up in the 17s kwh per 100kms. Used 65% of battery so range just over 300kms today. Had heating on too.

Overall decent first long spin and good public charging experience first time I've needed to use it. Getting to know the car and its capabilities.

Cycling is a council thing, I know my local councillors have 0 interest in bike lanes (or EVs). Getting people planning for one off housing yes, bike lanes no. DLR must have some councillors with different opinions than the usual FF/FG we have in the rest of the country

I dunno, I'm in Fingal and there's a lot of ideas which look nice on an artist's impression but never come to fruition

Plenty of housing estates around here but not many apartments or extra bus routes around towns or into the city

It's almost as if councils are incentivised to push up property prices by only allowing big houses 😏

I'm sure it has nothing to do with property tax rates at all

    Anyway, I digress...

Saw Fingal (around Ongar) used as an example of terrible planning where you have these windy estates with walls/fences causing dead ends meaning a 500m trip to the bus stop or shop is actually 2km walk which means people will just drive instead. Was a comparison with a grid system in Holland.

I was shocked when I was walking in that particular place and had to take a mad detour to get from A to B. Zero thought has been put in place for pedestrians and not surprisingly didn't see any. Lots of traffic though.

Edit: Reminds me when I tried to walk to a mall or something in Fremont, CA. Had to return back to fetch the car after a short attempt in walking.

Well you can't spell Fingal without fail 😂

It's not so bad where I am, there's enough shortcuts through to the main road that it's as quick to walk. But pavements have an awful tendancy to just end on one side of the road and nothing for pedestrians or cyclists joins up

I was thinking earlier that if I wanted to cycle to the city centre, there's really no good cycle path that takes me there from Swords.

There's a good one through Holywell, then it runs out until around Clare Hall, meanwhile I'd be sharing a main road with cars

As I said, there's a lot of talk from the Dublin councils about cycling infrastructure, but I've yet to see anything like a good plan with high quality separated cycle paths that go all the way into the city

They're great figures, thanks for the update. What size battery have you got 58 or 77? How long did the top up charge take?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,422 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

58kw in mine. Yeah I was happy with the figures but also shows how much range can change when circumstances change. And they didnt even change that much.

I think top up was about 3 hrs from 45% to 100%. Plugged in at 9 a.m., went to the office and collected it at lunch.

It was hotel beside workmates house with 5 chargers and I was the only one using them. I think my car charges at 11kw max on AC.

DLR is different. Sometimes we get too many cycle lanes and it looks like an afterthought

You have to stop and think what do I do now. Do I take left to go right? Curious if someone knows the point of these and if they are actually following them. This junction was in works for about a year.

In Istanbul atm. Seen a few Twizzys around but no other EVs. Talking to the driver who loves it. Great for the packed narrow streets. This one is municipality but police also use. Car looks tiny in pic but he is very tall.

Sad bombing site just behind car with flowers on ground. Six died and many injured. My Hotel only 7 small shops to left up a side street on same block. Fortunately I was away but a bit of dust in room after. Was told whole hotel shook😲.

Yes, thanks. City still in shock after four days. But trying hard to get back to normal..

If you’re going right and are confident, you can leave the cycle lane and take up position in the right lane and turn right with traffic. If you’re not confident, you stay in the cycle lane and move left of the cyclists going straight. Then wait for the lights to change so cross traffic can go and you go with them - you split the right turn into two movements so you’re never changing lanes.

I’ve never seen anyone use the staggered left at that junction but it’s used a lot on the Clonskeagh entrance to UCD.

Reminds me of a system in the Melbourne city centre known as the ' hook turn' in order to allow traffic & trams not be held up by cars doing right hand turns. Takes a little bit to get used to, but was actually really effective.

I hadn't heard of this "Trinity battery project". Scaling up on EV's isn't easy as an incumbent!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,991 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

I think they meant the Trinity car project, which was supposed to be a luxury segment EV

The plan was to basically copy Tesla's highly automated manufacturing and software focus with the new factory

It was one of Deiss's pet projects and now that he's gone I guess the current heads at VW are back to business as usual

I guess they've also figured out that software is hard and VW isn't very good at it so they're not going to go as fast as they want

Maybe by 2030 VW management will have figured out how to plug their computers in 😂

What happened Diess anyway since he was booted out? Doesn't come over as a guy willing to take it handy and enjoy a year's gardening leave.

Incredibly stupid of the various VW stake holders to deliberately get rid of the one binding force that was dragging them into the new electrified era, ahead of most other incumbent companies, albeit with some severe growing pains. VW could have still been #1 in 5-10 years time in total number of cars sold / total automotive revenue / total gross margin. Now, I can't see it happen. They would now do well to settle for #2 (behind Tesla who are bound to overtake them) and feel the breath from Chinese companies at the back of their neck. Maybe #3, #4, #5 is more realistic...
