Burying the lede there, Black Oil; this is from the creators of Dark, their next project. I'm so in.

I literally paused the video to take a breath once I read the words on screen! :D

    From the makers of 'Dark'......

"The creators behind the award-winning German series DARK, which received praise and excited fans around the world, have kicked off production for their next and highly anticipated show: “1899”

The eight episodes follow the mysterious circumstances around the voyage of an immigrant ship from Europe to New York. The passengers, all of different backgrounds and nationalities, are united by their hopes and dreams for a new century and their future abroad. When they discover a second ship adrift on the open sea that had gone missing for months, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a nightmare-like riddle, connecting each of the passenger’s pasts through a web of secrets."

Looks very interesting. Anything related to Dark just hook it directly to my veins.

The creators are writing and producing this time. Total creative control, some familiar faces and Ben Frost doing the score again. It all sounds super positive except only one season has been booked but it will be open for more.

Great news. Dark is out on its own to the mostly formulaic rubbish we get to sit through.

Ben Frost doing the score again..

which is more than obvious from the opening note in that trailer

Mod - I've moved the 1899 posts out of the Dark thread into this one.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1899_(TV_series)

According to our old friend wikipedia, they've only just started filming this. So, one for next year at the earliest.

Then first trailer has finally arrived.

Yes, looking forward to this! The trailer is completely in English but Jantje Friese/Baran bo Odar have said there will be multiple nationalities on board and each will be speaking their own language; it'll be interesting to see how that works - I think it's safe to assume it won't be like Lilyhammer where the locals spoke their native language and Steve Van Sant spoke English yet they were all able to magically understand each other 🙄

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I was wondering how language will be sorted as initially, I thought I shared a dubbed trailer but it doesn't appear that way.

Watched it again and genuinely thrilled to engage with this story; I'm trying to keep the hype in check after Dark but it'll be hard not to expect big things.

I'm on board (pun intended), purely because of the Dark connection.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

A small Behind the Scenes documentary; of note is that it looks like they're using similar tech seen in The Mandalorian with sophisticated projection techniques...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,509 ✭✭✭Shred

That worked really well in the Mandalorian alright; as mentioned in the clip one of the key aspects of that in comparison to green screen is the affect of the lighting from the screen on a scene, it makes it looks much more natural.

Can't wait to be very confused and a little disturbed! (until the confusing wears off and it changes to very disturbed! 😁)

That's funny, I was just thinking it was too long since we last heard anything about this. I hope the makers got some kind of decent commitment from Netflix re. story plans & subsequent seasons.

That looks interesting but these days I tend not to commit to something (Especially genre stuff) until I know they have at lease a second season. Been burned too many times.

New trailer, looks like this will have a fair degree of English in it - befitting the international cast I guess.

Looks fantastic. Can't wait, though there's a big bar to reach.

This would have been perfect Halloween weekend viewing, pity it's not out this month.

Cue the oppressive music of dread, then the words "None of this makes any sense".

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Down to office supply store for me to solve the imminent WTF'ery.

I keep thinking Titantic when I see the ship and it's four funnels is that coincidence or on purpuse I wonder.

Some shows are perfect winter viewing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭DrZeuss

Oh yes, I'm all over this....I just hope the bar isn't set too high for this and it can match and/or exceed Dark. Hopefully Netflix create another website like the one for Dark as a reminder of what you should know for the episode you're currently on, would have been left in the Dark without it 😉

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I'm going to adjust my expectations way down for this. It looks great, a real proper mystery with great production design - but nothing else was like Dark, before or since and doubt anyone could repeat the same trick twice over. If this turns out to be "merely" a competent, entertaining thriller then that'll be enough,. hopefully.

    bring it on

    Starts tomorrow.

They were of their time, bit of a fashion too. As ships got bigger and longer they needed bigger boiler rooms and more stacks to exhaust all that smoke. Four stackers were sought after for a crossing by 'the quality' as they signified size, luxury and speed, although the Titanic was built for comfort rather than speed. Fun fact, the furthest aft stacks on the Titanic and sisters were dummies.

As technology improved, ships were built with fewer funnels, usually just the one, and for a more streamlined, modern look.

    I haven't watched the trailer...

    I don't think I will 🙂

Each of the 8 episodes are a neat 50 minutes each. Makes a nice change from the modern affectation of one episode being 28 episodes long, the next is 70

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭cdgalwegian

I'll definitely watch that, but most definitely after I finish the whole season. I'd say they'd be sure not to have spoilers in it, given the timing of the release, but patience is a virtue - I think I'll use it as a sort of a book-end.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Episode 1 down and ooh yeah, let's go. Funny how knowing who made this I'm already trying to put the pieces together - or at least the clues I think the show was already putting in front of me. So many questions already, many of them mundane relating to who these passengers are and what their deal is. Especially the mandarin(?) speaking woman dressed up like a geisha. Weird!

I liked the little, but believable, addition where most of the characters don't speak the others ' languages, save for a few. One wonders how much that'll play into the chaos and confusion bound to be on the way.

In fact the first "wait, what was that?" Moment being the first-ish scene and the lady doctor; starting to say "19...", before correcting herself to, "1899". Hmmmm...

Aside from that, it looked fantastic. Great use of rear projection for the outdoor scenes, with rich set design to give the ship a heady, tangible sense of old world luxury, albeit with a dark(!) and brooding twist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

1: Excellent! Feels like proper Dark form. A ship full of secrets getting wrapped in a bigger mystery.

Characters and locations all well introduced.

Could I say I could guess at what's going on. Yes, no doubt. Do I think I really have a clue. Nope! 🙂

I do like that the ships name is Kerberos

    Kerberos, the "hound of Hades"

    just after meeting Prometheus

Prometheus, "best known for defying the gods by stealing fire from them"

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Yeah the ship names are somewhat on the nose, in the sense of pointing towards what I presume to be some kind of eventual thematic meaning.

The bit with the beetle was where I was like, wait, actually no; I really don't know what's going on

The Greek references are there, but there is also a heavy ancient Egyptian symbology going on, with the Pyramid as the obvious one, but also the beetle.

FIrst episode feels like a really creepy Agatha Christie set-up, with allusions to characters backgrounds and dubious motivations, but instead of a murder mystery, there are ominous portents of horrors to come.

Memory loss seems to be a theme, clearly with the female dr, as well as the black french-speaking guy who shows up from seemingly nowhere.

    I wonder is he

from the Prometheus, but can't remember yet?

tried this last night, don't think this type of stuff is for me, I was fast forwarding through parts where nothing was happening. Just don't have the patience for it.

Am in two minds whether to start watching... I like the premise, but usually prefer these high concept plots as a movie.

Give it a try. It's only ~50 minutes long. Did you watch Dark?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,154 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Heard good things about it, but I have an overload of subtitled shows and limited capacity to view :(

"To follow knowledge like a sinking star..." (Tennyson's Ulysses)

Episode 2, I think, digs deeper into Greek mythology, where the rooms are like a time-shifting labyrinth, at least so far for the captain. This then reminds me of that other Greek symbol of the ourobros, because it reminds me of the ending of that head-wrecker psychological horror film set mainly on board a ship: Triangle,

    with its supernatural circular narrative.

The corridors on the ship are being given a maze-like labyrinth feel to them.

The triangle with the line near the bottom is showing up everywhere, notably in connection with the boy, but is even part of the carpet design.

The relationship between the captain and Maura is fast becoming central, and we're getting the background to the captain, but Maura's flashbacks seem much more intriguing. As the Virginia Wilson character said in episode 1, everyone is running from something - the captain, as the captain, can influence events, but what can Maura's lost memories unlock?

And that final scene? The WTF'ery deepens.

I’ve just watched the first episode so far; really liking it and sooo many questions 😁

I didn’t realise the whole series was available all at once but won’t get to see any more of it until Sunday or early next week, pah!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭cdgalwegian

    Episode 3

    So the triangle/pyramid is

    the company logo.

Yet it is a tattoo on the boys neck?

The beetle in Egyptian mythology symbolizes regeneration and resurrection; but it also seems to lead the way for people, and even seems to allow locked doors to be physically opened (for the Daniel character). In the scene where Daniel gets the beetle to open the door to the boy's (Maura's) cabin, the boy scoops up the beetle -

as if both Daniel and the beetle are there for him (where Daniel swam from the Prometheus to the Kerberos following the boy). So the boy is a resurrection of some sort, and trying to manipulate others through the beetle?

The Kerberos' journey started off as a journey to America from England, but has become at this point the opposite journey, according to the passengers. So in the way that (some?) crew and passengers seemingly are mirror images of the now empty Prometheus, when they meet at this point, is this mirror-image flip-over the beginning of an infinite loop - the ouroboros?

Daniel using his technology to disappear the Kerberos becomes a flip-side from the Prometheus' pov then.

Every character that gets their background explored starts off lying on their bed, eyes wide open, and awakened with a startle after the words "Wake up" are uttered. This doesn't seem to be awakening from a dream - more like being kept in stasis, until their role is called upon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

2: Solid! Oh yes indeed! Very Dark! Ship full of secrets being explored. The bigger mystery tightens it's grip. All with the tension ratchetting up!

    So much going on..

The girl! Why kill the girl!

The screens! Are they monitors like westworld.. are the time traveller monitors.. is there some futurist type Captain Nemo in this world!

The ships! The company! The letters! The captain! The doctor!

Yep, so plenty to keep the mind going!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

3: WTF! I'm lost. Not a clue. What just happened.

    This is fine.

    Fine.

    Absolutely fine!

Dammit, I swear I was narrowing in on this being like Westworld.. but like.. the ship just disappeared.

I do think that passenger list looked like it might be that both ships had the same/similar people on board.

Yeah ok. I'll just keep watching. This is all fine! Fine!

I did get a bit creeped out at one point..

when the boy came out from under the bed.. he had a wierd look about him..

also with the sound effects.. it sounded like he went into some secret tunnel/passage under that bed too!
