There are butchers in the Galway Shopping centre, Briarhill Shopping centre, Mervue and Renmore. Tesco have done away with butcher and deli counters over the last few years. They only operate a hot counter usually.

Looks like there will be considerably fewer staff working in Tesco compared to Joyce's Knocknacarra. Fewer staffed counters and the vast majority of customers are using the self-service checkout.

That means no dedicated butcher in the whole of Knocknacarra now?

I don't think efficiency is something that could have ever been levelled at Joyces.

Joyces - is the situation below correct?

Doughiska = converted to Tesco Express, open

Ballybane = seems to be closed

Fr. Griffin road = closed for fit-out

    Knocknacarra = Tesco supermarket, open

Athenry = due to open as Tesco end of October? Smaller temporary Joyces shop open

    Tuam?

    Headford?

    Oughterard?

Inverin = Tesco supermarket? Open, as I think I saw ads in the GA?

Oranmore = still trading as Joyces

Tesco opened on inverin over the weekend . Busy busy . Much nicer layout that Joyce’s . Really made use of the space . Delighted to have it

The small joyces shop in Athenry is closed at least a week with new tesco store due to open 3 November

Ballybane due to open early November, Fr Griffin should be similar as they closed earlier. Oughterard should be soon too. Headford getting a full refit too.

Are the pumps at Headford going Certa self service?

    This too shall pass.

Absolutely. His rock buns and porridge bread are great and used to stock up when they were in Westside.

Haven't been out the way for over a month, they were digging the pumps area last time I passed.

    Yes, already converted and open/operating.

The supermarket is due to open as Tesco on the 4th or 5th Nov I think.

Tesco Tuam also opened a couple of weeks ago, and as you report from Inverin, and there is a vast difference in the layout. Much more efficent use of the space, as I thought there would be. Every square inch is used.

The previous Joyce's layout seemed very amateurish in comparison.

I don't think that they have a butcher section, though I was only on a quick visit. I think it might be all pre-pack.

The new Tesco also sells clothes, which Joyces obviously didn't do, and they have both Scan & Shop and self-service options.

I'm not sure how well they are going to do there though long-term, with a new, much more visible and accessible Aldi open right next door.

As with Knocknakara, the off-licence in Indreabhán is smaller, the Deli, Fish Monger, and Petrol Pumps are gone.

As you have said, the remaining sections make better use of the space, but the check-out area is a larger, with out really adding much. But it was very busy the first weekend, even with the extra parking spaces, it was full the few times i went there.

Nope, only one west of the Corrib is Divillys in Westside, unless you want a spin out to SuperValu in Barna or the excellent Feeney's Butcher in An Spidéal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,387 ✭✭✭bobbyss

The Barna butcher is excellent. Very customer focused. Good quality stuff especially their burgers. Yummy. There used to be a butchers somewhere in Lower Salthill but he's long gone and wasn't there one at Cooke's Corner too. There's a fish counter in Dunne's Westside but it's a pity they don't extend it to cover meat also.

Mortons in salthill also have a butcher counter

Is knocknacarra a Gaeltacht? The new serve serve told reply in Irish . They definitely making efforts . Had it been any other shop bar Joyce’s I’d have probably felt some sadness at a U.K. company taking over . But it’s definitely better for the staff & community they’ve taken over .

no butchers but last time I went to that Joyce’s for a bbq run the selection was paltry . Shop dingy and dark

There were several aspects of Joyce's I'll miss. The deli counter, bakery items from Le Petit Delice, ordering bday cakes from Goyas, polish section, Mexican section had a selection of stuff you usually need to order online, same for the American section, the Chinese hot counter with sushi during summer, and the butcher was much improved from the past and offered xmas turkey for a fraction the price of Divillys.

But the big two I'll miss are the An Post counter and the offie. Was so convenient not to need to go to Westside or Salthill... especially if you're hoping to post something before work. And the offie was probably the best thing about Joyces and had a great selection/prices. I know everyone hates Joyce's but I was always impressed with how they tried to innovate to keep people coming back. I never did full shops there, but it had a lot going for it and I'd find myself going there at least once a week.

The knocknacarra joyces was just a totally different experience to any of the rest in terms of everything, selection, staff and nearly even layout..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,202 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

Headford was a very spacious shop and had a great off licence, good deli/cold meat and good in house bakery. Layout was as stupid as the others. One of Joyce's many problems was a total lack of consistency from store to store. Completely different ranges from shop to shop, some great selling things in one and not available in others. Just woefully run really.

Yep. The gaeltacht is the dashed grey line stretching east to Kingston Gardens. Tesco is within the Gaeltacht

Scrumdiddlys Ice Cream has closed on Middle st and are apparently will be opening in the vacant unit next to Hartmans Jewellers - that'll be two ice cream shops within melting distance of each other 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,202 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

What's vacant beside Hartman's? Skechers one side and Treasure Chest the other?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭ratracer

No, there’s a vacant unit between Skechers and Hartman’s, I only noticed it on Saturday last, and still can’t remember what was there before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,090 ✭✭✭✭Mrs OBumble

The other half of Hartmans was there. They renovated and shrunk the shop before covud.

Unless Hartmans downsized, there's no space between the two shops.
