It’s the opposite to the start of last season. Nearly all the games have been at home and they haven’t had to face the strongest teams yet. It’s very early to be making any predictions at this point in the season. Just like a lot of people were writing them off after 5 or 6 games last season.

The Lions are off to a better start anyway.

The league has been good thus far. Zebre and the Dragons look better. Ulster going well as are the S.A sides. I think Edinburgh and Munster have been disappointing. Early days yet.

Welsh teams struggling. Scarlets vs Cardiff was a poor game played by 2 teams desperate for a win but showing little quality.

Same as Connacht Vs Munster then.

Flashes of good old Connacht (1st try for example) but still erratic and handling not what it used to be yeah.

Connacht have focused on defence (slightly improved), scrum (improved) and lineout (massively improved).

They forgot about rucks, Marmion/Reilly had to jump in it so often because there were not protected.

With all the talk of how poor Munster have been so far, was surprised when checked the URC table today only to see Scarlets rooted to the bottom of the table, tied with Zebre and Connacht on 4 points.

Connacht are ahead by virtue of more wins, and Scarlets are ahead of Zebre by virtue of better points difference, but Scarlets would never have been bottom of the table to my recollection, they're on -33 points after 4 games, must be worrying for Welsh fans, the 4 regional sides are in the bottom half of the table, same as all last season.

A lot of these results would tie into the opposition. Like Leinster have played Benetton and Zebre! Realistically both are wins. Connacht have Played the series away in S.A. Very tough to win. It will all shake out in the end. I've no idea who Scarlets have faced. They could be rubbish.

Scarlets have had the easier games of the three so far imo

    Ospreys (h), Ulster (h), Treviso (a), Cardiff (h)

    Zebre have had

    Leinster (h), Sharks (h), Munster (a), Stormers (h)

    Connacht have played

Ulster (a), 2 games in SA, and then Munster (h)

That's not a good start from them!

My god the sharks are such a "meat head" team. Tonnes of physicality but very little cleverness.

Even being caught out by some clever Glasgow mauling there.

I still find it amusing how the moan about the URC when they are arguably the ones dragging it down...

The Sharks bench is incredibly strong. Glasgow were doing ok for the first 50 minutes, but the South Africans were able to bring in Kolisi, Mbonambi and Ox Nche. They've scored three unanswered tries since.

Seen a lot of their fans online that aren't hopeful about their coaches. I suppose all fans think that when their team isn't quite going how they hoped but they really weren't fans at all.

Wasps going into admistration means another handful of players are on the market - Vincent Koch may head back to S Africa. I wonder could Connacht take on John Ryan? They badly need TH cover especially with Bealham away with Ireland.

I wonder how long before we see the English teams in the URC? It makes tv sense to have 1 united league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,417 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

It'll never happen. Ownership models make it impossible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭Blut2

One of the articles about Wasps going into administration this week pointed out that this will cost every other team in the prem about £500k-700k in lost gate receipts/sponsorship money/tv revenue. If any other teams are on the brink that won't help at all. It could turn into a vicious circle of teams going down one by one and dragging the next worst off team down with them, and the cycle repeating.

For all the talk over the years of the Welsh teams joining the Premiership if many more prem teams go down now its far more likely the remaining few 4-6 financially solvent ones would desperately try to join the URC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭Blut2

Yeah, for the good of the game of rugby I'd sincerely hope so. But given all we're seeing at the moment I'd really worry theres a non-zero chance they might end up down to a 6 team league in the near future. Which would lead to the remaining pro teams desperately looking for potential life boats.

Not a high odds outcome at all by any chance to be clear, but just probably higher odds right now than Welsh teams joining the prem as its teetering on the brink.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

The Welch teams aren't very solvent either. They rarely fill their stadiums. Then there's trying to leave the urc. They are obligated to the urc. English rugby did not want them and I think adding the regions would not help the premiership, as far as competition goes. No region currently, would be a top 4 team.

It is a shame to see Sharks v Ulster and Leinster v Munster both on at 5.15 on saturday. I think I will watch the former live and if the latter is any way good watch it back later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,859 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

What makes it even worse is that Leinster V Munster is usually at 3pm

5 15s a much better KO time for a Saturday evening though, especially at this time of year with floodlights etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,859 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Anytime between 5 and 8 are the best times in my opinion, I assume the 3pm slot was used to facilitate the away supporters going from Limerick to Dublin in the past but away fans should never be the priority, especially given recent trends in supporters attending games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,820 ✭✭✭Tigerandahalf

Sharks Ulster and Lions Glasgow postponed due to gastroentiritis among both away teams. Very strange - did they pick up something on the flight over? Would they have travelled together with Qatar Airways? They are there over a week now so unusual that both camps would have it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭Blut2

Leinster v Munster was originally scheduled for 7:30pm, so 5:15pm is still comparatively early.

The 7pm Saturday evening slot sells the best for Leinster for the Aviva games afaik - it gets a lot more casual fans in who can go for pints before/after.

Probably the same tea lady as the one that served the ABs before the 95 RWC Final. Can't trust those cheating saffers.

Have to say I can only remember it being once on at 3pm in recent years (or actually 2:30pm in that instance) and that was a playoff game not regular season. It was at 7:15pm last year when for odd reasons it was the last game of the regular season, but I think it’s virtually always an evening kick off.

A gstrointestinal infection, usually a virus, takes between 6 hours and 72 hours to manifest problems and recovery can take up to 2 weeks in some infections. It can even be fatal in a worst case scenario.

Not a fantastic look for the TMO call at the end of the Benetton - Bulls match there to award Bulls a try. Bad call.

Frank Murphy and his TMO had howlers in the Bulls/Benneton game.
