Fast.com can be unreliable, I have had 1.1Gbps on it too which should be impossible as I only have 1Gbps gear.

I just did a speedtest on Fast.com and had 1.1Gbps too which is impossible on a Gpon connection. it is not a reliable speedtest at all.

Speedtests for Eir 1 Gbps usually max out at 940 with upload around 95.

Anyone got any suggestions for me. Finally got Eir gigabit FTTH installed this week. First house in the estate to get it so sharing the line with nobody at the moment. Wired connection to PC with gigabit ethernet, but highest speed I have received is around 750Mb.

Going direct from the router with a Cat 7 cable after I replaced the original Cat 5e because of the speed. Thought perhaps that was the weak link.

I presume if it works at all, it is working and you can't get a partial signal or anything? Just doesn't seem right to me. Majority of people i have seen seem to be able to get 940Mb or so over wired connection to PC. A little disappointed if i am honest.

Could be the network card in your computer. I have 2 pcs, one is 6 years old and has a 1gig network card but speedtests on that are similar to yours. I usually get 600-800 on that pc. My newer pc has a 2.5gig network card and I get 920 to 945 all the time on that.

I'm using a nearly 10 year-old laptop and had a 14 year old desktop up until last year. Both of them had 1gig NICs which would get their expected performance on my LAN when running backups to the NAS.

Could it be drivers maybe? 🤷‍♂️

Thanks folks. You could be right. I built this PC around 10 years ago so it absolutely could be that. I have got 840 or so on my Pixel 6 over wifi so would make sense. Might be time to build a new one i think...

On the Eir up to 100 Meg service, cabinet only capable of 40, always below 30. Hope to post later today if my upgrade to 1 Gig FTTH goes ahead.

Got my upgrade 07 July. Did a few tests, all around 945 down and 97 up. A 3 gig video which took 18 minutes to download before, is now 50 seconds.

Switched to Eir up to 100 mb broadband in May . Was getting around 90mb for the first six weeks .It has been atrocious since . Dropouts on a regular basis

and the phone only works randomly , the oh is very precious with her landline.I have rang them more in the last six weeks than my previous supplier in ten

years. Joke of a company , can hardly watch Netflix now.

    HI All

i have a question, i have recently moved from South Africa and have installed Vodaphone gig ftth,in SA when i had gig fiber i was getting sub 5ms ping to google dns (8.8.8.8)

now for Ireland on the gig ftth it never goes below 10 and average around 12, is this normal for Vodaphone routing ? also if i ping cloudflare dns (1.1.1.1) it averages around 26ms

my brother on eir fttc gets sub 10 to both

    regards

I always found eir had the lowest latency and like yourself VF to be the highest, I don't there's much you can do about it tbh.

At the moment I get an average 4ms to 8.8.8.8 and 13ms to 1.1.1.1 (traceroute suggests I am hitting a Cloudflare server in the UK so that's probably not too bad, the Google route goes through INEX so looks local).

    Vodafone SIRO in North Dublin.

Sky SIRO 500/50. Not bad for €35pm. Miles ahead of VM 500/50 for €70pm as previous ISP, especially for latency.

Cable systems by their very nature have higher ping figures compared to fibre systems. Is that a wired or wireless test? You could have gotten VM 500/50 for 40 as a new customer, sky prices are off the scale once your contract finishes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭[Steve]

Yeah I expected high ping with cable (55-90ms typical online gaming) until recently getting access to SIRO. I would have switched regardless of the offers from VM solely for FTTH. Sky have €35 for 12mo and told I can just call again for same/similar offer or I'll just switch to another SIRO provider so makes no difference really for pricing.

That was a wired test too. Still adjusting cabling, QoS, and AP locations in my home though.

Yeah I've had high ping with cable for a while. Much better wired on SIRO. Same online games I'm seeing 12-25ms.

Currently what I'm getting over wireless. Drops to about 350Mbps in corners of the house so not too bad. Looking forward to WiFi 7 coming out in 1-2 years though.

Recently signed up to Pure 1gb. Speedtest gives 300-400 on three different routers directly connected with ethernet, their F2000 (pile of junk), a fritzbox and a tp-link, all the same, everything power cycled etc. Other sites are giving 600, Mlabs, nperf at times

I was on the phone to them and while on speeds increased after the ont was power cycled but went down shortly after, back on to them and the said they'd send out a new cable for the wall to the router, checked one I have and no change. They said to get an engineer out it it's my fault...not sure how that would be it would cost me €143, this doesn't seem right or sit right with me, any suggestions :)

Rubbish, one provider I'd never consider going with, been there done that, not returning. They've great TV but their BB is awful, they seem to have routing problems that they've never resolved.

TG never had a problem with Sky BB in the 3 years with them. TG.
