He leaves out quite a few points, but also makes some valid points and points that would be backed up by facts. Or to put it another way his points are just as arguable as the more simplistic Slava Ukraine pundits. His comment at the end regarding the war on terror, that it didn't start with 911 and you have to look at the decades of US meddling in the Middle East to understand it was spot on and applies with this invasion too.

Putin is an autocratic murdering bastard who with his mates has reduced the nation with the most natural resources on Earth to a near slum for a huge part of "his" people. While lining his own pockets with billions of course. He's likely the actual richest person on the planet. Even his slavish propagandists on Russian TV have been openly calling for their lords and boyars the oligarchy to stump up cash for this land grab like the medieval kingdom it is. They just accept this as their reality. They don't even try to spin it, because the Russian people accept, even oddly celebrate this crazy reality.

But putin is not mad and he wasn't "unprovoked" as is so often claimed. The guy in the vid made spot on points about how America painted Bin Laden too. The czar in the Kremlin had his reasons and to him and many Russian people they made and make sense. Just like the war on terror nonsense made sense to many Americans. Until it didn't. This is not some thick Hollywood flic with black hatted and white hatted cowboys where realities and moralities are kept simple for the simple.

His nation like the US have long played proxy hot and cold war geopolitics in sovereign nations and have done since(and just before) WW2. Like two dogs at a bone, only the bone changes. Sometimes it's South America, other times it's Africa, the Far East, the Middle East. Eastern Europe was the bone for most of the 20th century. They're well chewed out. There are few enough nations on Earth that haven't felt the hot breath of the pair of them breathing down their necks at some point or other because of their "interests". There's barely a conflict over the last century that didn't involve one, or both of them at the same time. Ukraine is no different and both the US and Russia have been playing silly buggers while people died.

Russia screwed up massively the second they made their disastrous and murderous run for Kyiv. They fared just as badly in the north east. They made unbeliveably stupid decisions like nicking the foreign airliner fleet. They made some better decisions to concentrate on Donbas and the south east. Until they didn't and lost a huge chunk of it and made a Special Runaway Operation. They're running away even on this very day. They can't help but lie, even when actual truths might serve them better. Lying comes as easily as breathing to them and listening to lies comes just as easily to the ears of their people and their supporters. That won't change any time soon. They should be driven back to their borders with every means at the West's disposal. But putin and Russia's moves were not unprovoked and didn't magically appear out of thin air and America had the biggest hand in that. PLus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.

Actually I would say putin and Russia's most monumental screwup of all was being utterly stupid enough to a) believe they could win b) not realise the resistance that would meet them from Ukrainians and across the world(the part that matters in this case) and c) take the obvious bait is obvious in the first bloody place.

Unless you mean his picking apart of Russia I don't get you. Ukraine is winning back territory every single day now.

Be straight to the Donbas if you made that mistake! Focuses the mind.

Tbh, makes a lot of sense to frame the war that way.

Lot harder to explain to the locals he's gets slapped around by a bunch of Ukrainians.

The speech is obviously beyond crazy. What interests me is of all those people sitting in the room with him, how many are seriously on board and how many are sitting there thinking the country is going down a bizarre and dangerous path and something needs to be done urgently to change it ...

If Zelensky and his predecessor were handpicked by the USA, and if Ukraine's pivoting away from Russia is really all just a carefully orchestrated American psy op, then it begs the question why the Ukrainian people are fighting Russia so hard and didn't decorate their tank muzzles with garlands of flowers. That's a reality that cannot be deflected from. We know what happens to US-picked leaders of countries in the past if their will goes against that of the people. They don't last. Ask the Shah of Iran or the recently deposed government of Afghanistan. But the people of Ukraine are fighting for Zelensky.

That's an extremely good point. Though I don't know if they're fighting so much for Zelensky as their nation, which is the better reason anyway and the more long lasting one. Clearly putin thought they would get a LOT more support from Ukrainians. Oops.

Ditto for the ex Russian imperial sattelites of the Soviet Union. With the exceptions of Belarus and lattery Ukraine, the rest got as far away from Mother Russia as they could and as fast as they could.

Another post blaming America for what is clearly a Russian made war.

    The mind boggles ☹️😡

Batshit crazy stuff. He's completely backed himself into a corner now.

What does he do when Ukraine takes back more territory in the next few days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,395 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Sure, they can't all be away with the fairies. Must be many there who are just as deeply worried. This man and his regime are the greatest threat to world peace for several decades.

    That was weird

Why would Ukraine sit down and talk ?

They will have pushed the Russian army back to their border soon.

No, but we're pretty close to WW3, if not in it. How that plays out is another thing of course.

That declaration isn't worth the paper it's printed on. No credible country is going to recognise it and, most importantly, Ukraine and its backers won't.

I dont think were at the 'Cuban missile crisis' moment just yet but it seems to be heading in that direction.

The very sad thing that the speech highlighted is that Russia is/was a great country of traditions and culture and talent and untold natural resources and riches and vast open spaces with unlimited possibilities for development, but successive despots, dictators and czars have exploited and squandered that due to their own paranoia and personal gains and enrichment.

Bit rich of him raging against Capitalism, as probably the richest world leader, backed by a cabal of asset stripping Oligarchs and corrupt self enriching military elites.
