remember viewing at Jackie Whelan's (mentioned above) and all the parked tractors had the hand clutch pulled, to keep the disc from sticking,

would'nt want to forget to release it though as driving constant in pulled position could prove expensive

Hydraulics were different to most other tractors too.

The entire rear housing unbolt off, and lifts away complete with hyd pump, control valves, lift arms, main lift ram, and PTO selector and gears.

Can be worked on on a bench then.

There's a filter in the bottom of the rear axle housing about the size of a small biscuit tin, that the pump sucks out of.

Usually found to be clogged with 50 years of dirt and grime.

Poor/slow/jerky lifting, and this is your first port of call, before changing pumps etc.

Joe Ahern was a Leyland dealer in Grange, Limerick. He's dead a good few years now and the garage is shut that long too. He was a character - smoked liked a chimney but was good. Leyland were popular around the area.

Ya might just find the "reliable one" at 5 times the price is far cheaper in the end.

I think you've dodged a bullet here, best of luck in your search

    Thats a pity.

Im down limerick direction and the leylands were popular down here and liked.

Parts availability is fine. Charnleys in the uk have most of the parts on the shelf .

I bought a 272 synchro a few years back for 700 euro . A bit of work done to it, servicing it , freeing out breaks ,replacement front axel , lights ,exhaust , window rubbers etc.

Tractor is sitting at 1200 euro now.

Fine tractor, starts one tough of the key , does whats asked of it.

One of the bonuss of it is its on 16.9 r38 on the back and does just over 40k on the road.

Steering and brakes are a bit vague on it though and driving position isnt nice for a tall person.

The brother has a 10/60 nuffield which did an aweful lot of work for us over the years which is currently in retirement .

I wouldnt have an issue buying another if the money was right

Get used to having no brakes

Sounds like you got it at a good price, wonder when or if tractor prices will ever get back to that level.

By any chance is that tractor available, if not that's sound. I'm at a stage where I'm not sure I'll have the luxury of finding acheap tractor in connacht

No such thing as a cheap tractor if it is one you want to do work with.

A tractor that is cheap to buy, will cost you more in the long run with breakdowns, parts, lost time, hassle, stress.

I was lucky enough with the price . But it did need a bit of time put into it , to get it into working order.

I plan to hold onto it and tidy it up more when time allows, but thanks for the interest though.

Well used to that. Grew up driving nuffields and leylands. Drew silage with crystals. And as one of the lads who has a 462 says, its the reason you get a synchro one of them, use the gears and reverse to stop it .

What is the story with the brakes? Why are they so bad?

Is it because they are inherently weak and ineffective, or are they prone to failure or wearing out in double quick time?

there was a fellow going to the co op here one morning and met something coming opposite direction . stood up and stood on the brake and for extra pressure pulled up hard on the steering wheel

steering wheel broke off completely and he very nearly went head over heels over the back end

it was either a universial 4 or a 460 cant remember which

brakes wernt too bad if you serviced them once weekly 😁
