was Pinks always an outdoor venue or was that down to Covid? I know they opened around the time of Covid or something but can't remember if they had outside seating from the start

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,532 ✭✭✭Boooourns

Pinks will close if it loses its outdoor seating, its one of the reasons it's so popular is because of the setup.

Crazy decision but then again is anyone surprised with this lot.

  • Registered Users Posts: 401 ✭✭GandhiwasfromBallyfermot

Crazy decision and the reason given for taking away the seating at Pink's is because apparently it "Detracts from the visual appeal of the area". I mean have they been down there lately? Unless Pink's are letting people shoot up in the outdoor area it can only improve the area.

I don't think Waterford Council like Waterford very much.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,532 ✭✭✭Boooourns

If anything it adds to the area. That building has been an absolute diaster since it was built but since Pinks and the New York cafe was put in its been more vibrant and there's bit if a buzz down there.

Can't be having that now, down with this sort of thing.

Yeah hard to see Pinks been able to stay open without that large outdoor area

With The Yard gone it will mean more people crowding inside the Woodman/Lounge, with the students back it will become as crowded as the Kazbar always is

Lets hope the appeal is accepted

It's bizarre alright. I thought it enhances the visual appeal of the area, which before hand was a bunch of empty units and train park used by teenagers knacker drinking.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,215 ✭✭✭friendlyfun

Stupid question, but is it the councillors themselves who voted on this decision, and if so is there away to see which individuals voted on it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 182 ✭✭Deiselurker

No the councillors wouldn't have a vote on that. I'd say it's the planning department that decides on that.

Bizarre decision. People were being encouraged to socialise outdoors as was safer and Covid and other illnesses are still around so now people will be now crammed inside.

Be nice little pub crawl down that side of the city if this reopens

Speaking of there looking back wtf were the government at the a few years back with the takeaway drink nonsense

  • Registered Users Posts: 401 ✭✭GandhiwasfromBallyfermot

The article says its only cosmetic work so I wouldn't get my hopes up. Probably doing just enough to keep the heritage grants coming. The day Doolans reopens is the day the boom will truly be back.

Passed Pinks earlier and it looks like they're working on taking the outside part down already.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,532 ✭✭✭Boooourns

False alarm it was open yesterday when I passed. Hopefully the appeal is successful, the councils' reason for closing it is as ridiculous as they come.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,991 ✭✭✭iseegirls

Why would it be ridiculous if you were one of many people and families living above the restaurant, and having to put up with the noise if the outdoor area is full?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,532 ✭✭✭Boooourns

Thats not the reason its being told to stop though is it?

It's to do with the reason that it takes away the look of the area, which is fairly laughable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 161 ✭✭JourneyMan8

if they bought pinks as an indoor buy(not sure if that was the case or not), then i've no sympathy really cause they've lucked out from Covid. But now they know they have a good business with outdoor potential, go and buy a better area for a business you know works.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,215 ✭✭✭friendlyfun

I am kinda annoyed they were just gifted the multi-million euro space under the Apple Market.

**** me, Pinks adds a bit of life and colour to an otherwise visually grim area.

While the market bar is a nice bar the only downside is the unisex bathroom setup there; probably won,t be in there again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 297 ✭✭nomoedoe

They have unisex toilets in Revolution too, out of curiosity what’s the issue you have with it that wouldn’t make you return?

And in a hell of a lot of places all round the country and indeed Europe.

Hi all. I haven’t been to Waterford city in years but I’m planning on bringing a bunch of lads there for a night out next month.

We all went to college there 20 years ago and have very fond memories.

So I’m wondering if there will be a good buzz in the town on a Friday night? Would prefer to head there for a Friday rather than a Saturday, unless the place would be dead on Fridays.

    Any advice?

    Cheers everyone.

Geoffs is great for a few drinks at any time of day, but you won't get any live music there. The Apple Market area has been hugely revamped since your college days. There are plenty of bars in the area still, and loads of places to eat. O' Connell STreet and the Quay are also great for bars - my favourites being Tullys in O' Connell Street, and Uisce Beatha on the Quay - great for live music.

Katty Barry's and Itty Bittys are located opposite the Theatre Royal on the Mall. Katty Barry's have great live music.

The only late bars are Kazbar and The Reg.

    Fantastic, thanks for this info.

So there is a good crowd around on Friday nights then yeah?

Back in the day, I remember most places being quiet on a Friday night, and Saturday being busier. But I’d prefer to go there on the Friday. Unless the place would be dead quiet that is.

I'd second Tully's and Uisce Beatha as decent spots on a Friday night. Uisce is on the small side however if there's a big group of ye. Henry Downes is a good spot too. All 3 are within a 2/3 minute walk of each other. Geoff's is decent and handy for early pints and food.

This time of year will tend to be a bit quieter anyway. Will start to get busier again after the October bank holiday as we head towards Christmas. I always enjoy Friday nights more than Saturdays anyway, always a decent sized crowd but never packed like a Saturday, at least that was before Covid. I think the nightlife in the town is still below pre-covid levels.

There's a lack of mid week 'late bars' in the city. After 12 Only the student places and a small section of the Market bar open Monday-Wednesdays

Revolution has cut back there opening hours a lot in the past few years

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,874 ✭✭✭BBM77

Don't think it is a lack of bars, it is people won't go during the week. Culture has changed, if people go out during the week, students excluded, it is usually for a meal. Would not even occur to me to go to a pub during the week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,155 ✭✭✭johnnykilo

In direct answer to your question, yes there should be a good crowd around on Friday night, it won't be as busy as Saturday night, but it won't be quiet either, particularly if you're in around the Applemarket area where most of the bars are.

Phil Grimes is another good spot (less than 5 minutes walk from there) and while not everyone's cup of tea, Wetherspoons is just up the road (towards the quay) also. There's generally a good crowd in Wetherspoons, but I appreciate it's not for everyone.

I remember going out on a Wednesday night after work a few years ago in the summer with friends and everywhere was empty. The Market Bar was the only place that had any people in it because they had a lad on a guitar so we said we'd camp out there for a while and keep an eye on the Kazbar to see if it got busy but it never did. Just don't think the culture is there anymore for midweek pints unless you're a student. I know in my workplace a lot of people commute in from Wexford & Kilkenny, or even the Dunmore Road and refuse to leave it unless its for work, so the commuter culture probably contributes to the quietness midweek.
