Yes exactly that - for the OP - Companies don’t want to ‘advertise’ that they’ve closed basically (unless it’s a retirement etc)

Many people are sloppy and everything they do is half arsed. They don't finish what they've started and they leave a mess behind them. Ceasing to trade and not bothering to announce it on their website, social media etc. is the sort of thing they do.

Another possibility is that people feel shame that they have had to close their business so they brush the matter under the carpet. I think this would be a minority of cases though.

Many websites are outsourced and treated in the same way that print advertising was in the past. They may not be updated over a year. When a business runs into trading difficulties, the website is often the least of its priorities. Just for .COM, there were 3,276,178 new domain names in August and there were 3,145,284 deleted. The website of a business that ceases trading in January might not even be deleted until some time in February of the folliowing year. It depends on when the domain name was registered or renewed and when the business paid for the web hosting. Both of these are typically annual payments. It isn't just an Irish thing. In theory, the liquidator of a business should get the domain name as a business asset but most of them are deleted without being sold.

Websites can go without updates for longer than that. If a business has ceased trading, the liquidation process can take some time. Businesses might also get taken over and hosting and renewal fees keep getting paid. There are options to renew domain names for up to ten years though most renewals are yearly. If the website development is outsourced then it may be up to the web developer rather than the business to take down the website.

Hosting might be paid for several years as well, all outsourced and forgotten when the place closes. No way to get a refund for it either usually so they don't bother .

Also a lot of the time businesses don't close completely, you'll see places that are gone with years still doing a few small jobs for old loyal customers

I've experienced that with UK and German sites.

You will always experience more of that in your own country as national websites will have far more priority.

We're very sloppy and half arsed about all aspects of IT in this country. Even really simple things like opening times and Google reviews. The first thing you see when you google them.
