Why do permanently closed businesses in Ireland never put up a sign on their website that they're closed?

In other words, why do they pretend that there're still trading when they're not.

Or, this this just another example of the "cute hoor" culture in Ireland.

They can't. If they go into liquidation they're website is taken.

That’s a bit of a simplistic way of looking at it

Can often be a case of a business wanting to ‘go away quietly’ and come back under the same name in the future, even if they left creditors unpaid etc

Just another example of the casual attitude some Irish businesses have.

Don't answer emails. Don't provide order updates. Don't have items in stock. Don't deliver on promises.

And then wonder why people go elsewhere.

Yes exactly that - for the OP - Companies don’t want to ‘advertise’ that they’ve closed basically (unless it’s a retirement etc)

Many people are sloppy and everything they do is half arsed. They don't finish what they've started and they leave a mess behind them. Ceasing to trade and not bothering to announce it on their website, social media etc. is the sort of thing they do.

Another possibility is that people feel shame that they have had to close their business so they brush the matter under the carpet. I think this would be a minority of cases though.

This is an interesting point about shame.

How many people try and fail. Lots I imagine.

In America it seems to be celebrated. Fair play and I actually agree. Give it a go if you're confident in your business. Different laws though.

Just not a priority, especially if they were more of a bricks & mortar business. Some now think that all revolves around the internet and websites and an increasing amount of business is done there. But for many small businesses, the physical place of trading is where things happen. The website is just a casual after thought, probably funded by a LEA ecommerce grant or whatever.

I'd bet this happens in any country.

Many websites are outsourced and treated in the same way that print advertising was in the past. They may not be updated over a year. When a business runs into trading difficulties, the website is often the least of its priorities. Just for .COM, there were 3,276,178 new domain names in August and there were 3,145,284 deleted. The website of a business that ceases trading in January might not even be deleted until some time in February of the folliowing year. It depends on when the domain name was registered or renewed and when the business paid for the web hosting. Both of these are typically annual payments. It isn't just an Irish thing. In theory, the liquidator of a business should get the domain name as a business asset but most of them are deleted without being sold.

In the cases I'm thinking about, the businesses might have ceased trading 3-4 years ago but there seems to be a deliberate attempt* by the operators to keep their website up and running.

*(Because the hosting fees are still being paid)

Websites can go without updates for longer than that. If a business has ceased trading, the liquidation process can take some time. Businesses might also get taken over and hosting and renewal fees keep getting paid. There are options to renew domain names for up to ten years though most renewals are yearly. If the website development is outsourced then it may be up to the web developer rather than the business to take down the website.

On rougue trader in England closed down after being investigated by a consumer programme on the BBC. They opened up again shortly after with a slightly different name, and "as seen on TV" as part of their advertising.

But a business that closes isn't automatically liquidated.

A business that closes because the lease wasn't renewed or the owner wants to retire or whatever might reopen elsewhere or later.

Keeping some web presence is probably much cheaper than trying to recreate the same, it's not like keeping a shop leased on the main street just in case.

Relatives of mine closed a business years ago, but various Web crawlers still list it years after it shut.

Domain could stay registered for up to 10 years

Hosting might be paid for several years as well, all outsourced and forgotten when the place closes. No way to get a refund for it either usually so they don't bother .

Also a lot of the time businesses don't close completely, you'll see places that are gone with years still doing a few small jobs for old loyal customers

If I was to walk in and tell you that your place of employment had gone bust and that as of that moment you would not be paid, how concerned would you be about putting up a notice on a website, answering emails etc?

If you were owed money by the firm that went bust, you you be happy to agree to that money being spent putting up notices and following up emails etc rather than paying you?

You have no idea of what happens in a liquidation.

Obviously in a liquidation situation, I wouldn’t expect staff to answer emails.

I've experienced that with UK and German sites.

You will always experience more of that in your own country as national websites will have far more priority.

There's many a business just closes - no liquidators involved. That's the proper way to close a business - pay off all creditors, settle any amounts owed to staff and just close. As pointed out above, websites for many are just an extension of advertising. Would you pay any attention to an advert in last years paper?

The OP must have a specific case in mind though, where perhaps a business has stated it's closed with bills outstanding but continues to trade online?
