water softener is a whole-house filtration system that removes hardness-causing calcium and magnesium minerals from your water through a process called water softener

Hi, we used https://www.natureswater.ie/ for softening system and reverse osmosis tap supply about 5 years ago, been good since.

I used https://www.crystalclearwater.ie/ earlier this year. Installed a water softener and a filter system for drinking water in the kitchen.

The water softener was installed outside, in a protective box, which was useful for me as I've a small kitchen.

No connection to the company other than as a customer.

looking for help to diagnose this problem I have been having for a while with our water softner

the brine tank containing the salt seems to accumulate a brown film or some kind of sludge on the wall of the tank

I have hit the regen button and emptied the tank and washed it down

a few times but the issue reappears a few weeks later

    see attached pics

any idea what the cause is and potential fix?

Got same issue with mine, hoping someone can come up with an answer.

Doesn't seem to be affecting the ability of it though, still working fine.

Edit: for reference, I bought mine from CWS Water Solutions, think they are Galway based. Happy with system.

I got mine from zen water filters based out of Clonmel Co. Tipp (I am in Limerick)

The installer was a guy from SA and seemed to know his stuff and was good to deal with but business is no longer open

Hopefully someone will come up with an answer - are there other forums we can ask the question do you know?

THe brown water has come back again, after I drained most of it out, scrubbed the sides of the salt container, and put fresh water back in.

Could it be the resin leaking?

I used Celtic water solutions. Have the unit serviced once a year. No issues 12 years later. Service incudes 3 stage water filter replacement on the drinking water tap.

can anyone recommend someone in the midwest who can do a service?

my system is a clack softner and everything I read about them said they do not need a service but I too get the brown sludge/film on the side of the tank but not on the surface

Same problem with the brown sludge, have rinsed out the salt container a few times but it always comes back. Would be great if someone knew what the cause is.

Thx for the recommendation but looking at recent reviews they are not doing themselves any favors it seems

Did u get a clack water softner installed or another brand?

Most of what I read indicates clack systems do not need anual service (unless issues arrise such as the one I advised above)

I'll ring around a few and see what they say

What type of salt do you use? My installer mentioned that there are two types sold - rock salt (quarried) and sea salt.

The installer said that the sea salt is often cheaper, but it can contain impurities - he doesn't recommend it.

Sea salt might be causing the sludge?

We had the same brown suldgy water in our tank. have checked with a couple of plumbers and they said its to do with the salt that we are using. We got a deal on the salt the last time we bought it, so finishing it out first and then we will have to buy the not so cheap salt and see if it actually makes any difference. For now, we just clean it out every few weeks or so

Yeah, starting to think it must be the salt, as I changed brands a good while back, and had zero brown sludge for many years with the previous brand.

I use Axal Pro Salt Tablets

    What is everyone else using?

yeah it’s a clack water softener. Salt from local place. Axal salt (orange bag)

The annual service covers the water filters also. Steep at 160e a year

I use axal too - it's a rock salt. I don't have any sludge from it

This is the salt I have been using of late, and which is probably the reason for the brown sludge? There's no supplier name, Brand etc on it. The writing you see here is the only writing on it.

It is about €3 per 25kg bag cheaper than what I had been using, but I think I'll switch back to my original brand (can't remember what it was) to see if the sludge goes away.

This is the same tablets we have been using. I think its Bronx (or something similar) that we used previously and we will be going back to. The price of the salt has doubled in the last year or 2.

Yeah, the salt I used for years moved from 9.99 per bag to 13.50, and then I spotted this different salt in another hardware store for 9.99, so changed over to it. Then the brown sludge arrived.

So it's a decision as to whether to accept the sludge (which doesn't seem to be affecting the operation of the softener), or go back to the more expensive salt and get a clean container.
