Maybe now, due Putins mis -adventurers Russia as we know it will be under a threat to its very existence , but it will come from within. But even before the invasion of Ukraine, who would be even thinking about invading it? After all, it was supposed to be the 2nd strongest military in the world and with the BOMB, no less!!! Nato, the west etc, were all painted a s being a threat ( wrongly ) but Putin needed a reason to justify his illegal invasion plans. And so we have the big bad NATO and the evil EU. Putin has unleashed a whirlwind that will strengthen the EU and NATO beyond what he could ever have imagined in his wildest dreams, ( or worst nightmares ) but will go a long way to destroying Russia's ability wage war on its Neighbour's for generations.

That about sums up the purpose of Article 5.

Overwhelming force sums up the purpose of Article 5

I don't see how WW2 being brutal on the population of Ukraine somehow makes a twisted justification of a brutal oppression of the population of Ukraine. I don't really care about some justification of the genesis of their worldview - it is paranoid delusion. Over the last 100 years Russia has been the invading force, not the threatened one.

I do agree with you fully. I am not saying their viewpoint is correct, I am pointing out they have a different perspective with its own logic and fallacies.

Yes, while the country is a dictatorship for now, it's borders are open and until recently it was not difficult for a Belarusian citizen to get a Shengen visa. People in Belarus travel to neighbouring countries very often for work or shopping. The nearest IKEA to Minsk is in Vilnius, which is only 170km away and it's very normal to drive there to buy some furniture. I would estimate that 10% of Belarusian citizens work abroad, mostly in Poland, Russia and Germany. Everyone in Belarus has relatives or friends abroad. So Belarusians know full well how other countries are doing.

No, I never said NATO is not involved. They are helping Ukraine against barbarians, but they themselves are not fighting Russia.

Russia is bigging up NATO’s involvement so the shîtshow Ru military are running in Ukraine doesn’t look so bad. You must be used to communicating with people that have had soviet propaganda shoved down their throat for years. You’re wasting away your fingers and keyboard for no reason when trying that with us.

Not a good day for the Russian Airforce

Three new airframes to the Loss list. Confirmed a new SU-30, The SU-34 in Crimea and the crash of that SU-25 on social media today.

OT: It was during Tony Blair's regime that the last cent was paid. That they had to pay back even a penny is galling and ridiculous. The US got from the UK, for free: RADAR, cavity magnetron (basis of all microwave ovens), the electronic computer, the jet engine, etc, etc.

The US didn't consider the UK ally enough to share atomic bomb tech, until the UK demonstrated a hydrogen bomb that made the US one look like a damp squib, then all of a sudden they were more than happy to have the UK as a nuclear secrets ally - 'by the way, what was that tweak you used to to increase the yield, not that we really need it or care, but just out of vague, casual curiosity?'

The potential for use of nuclear weapons has to be factored into any conflict with a nuclear power like Russia, it shapes how the conflict is cirrently being fought.

The Russians control Kazakhstan in much the same manner as they do Belarus. There are geographical barriers that limit Chinas movement (Mongolian steppe, desert, mountains and Amur river). For the time being, Russia has a solid alliance with China (who need them for resources), China has being building their belt and road through the old territories of the Soviet Union and diplomatically extending it's influence. In the face of the United States both are "frenemies" and China is some distance from the heartland.

I saw lots of claims of negotiations for a surrender in the area west of the dnipro near Kherson. Is it likely to be people getting their hopes up or a psychological tactic against the Russians or is it likely to be something real?

I think it started out as psychological but has since become something real.

Ukrainians are playing a very clever game with social media, twitter, etc. Far better than anything the Russians have done.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

The Chinese cancelled all investment in Russia and have now demanded that they will only pay half the cost for oil and gas or else Putin can F off, they also refused to provide any help including MREs, and blocked Russian flights

    some allies

The map you posted showing off infrastructure from China to the Stans that’s already built shows that China can reach Russian “heartlands” in less than 3 days now on roads and rail they built, never mind the heavily populated border they share with Russias Far East

You can’t have it both ways in your arguments, either Russia is protected by THE BOMB or it’s not, your geographic arguments can’t be applied so selectively if THE BOMB doesn’t matter

Yes, I'm trying not to believe (or repost) every rumour on twitter. It would be great if it were true though. It would save the area from a lot of devastation.

If you're a Russian solider on the northern bank of the Dnieper, outgunned, outmanned, outfought and down to your last ammo\food with no hope of resupply - and you've just seen the debacle in the east...what do you think they will do? Dying for Putin and the glory of Rossiya suddenly doesn't seem quite so compelling.

The one that says 'quack that, I'm not getting in that death trap' and runs across the road to get far away from it and hides in the bushes - he needs to be hunted down and eliminated before he gets back to Russia and breeds.

You don't have to look past Kasparov for someone you would like to see replace Putin:

"Their heroism is so refreshing at a time of cynicism. I wish them strength. I believe that we all owe them big. I don’t think we could ever compensate them for the sacrifices they’ve made, not just for their country, but for freedom around the world.

As a Russian citizen – though with the longest record of fighting Putin – I still feel responsible for the suffering that the Ukrainians are suffering and caused by Putin’s criminal regime. We will never be able to repay Ukraine for their sacrifices, heroism, and spirit. Ukraine is a beacon to the free world.

What Ukraine has done has reminded all of us that we had values and ideas worth fighting for – and dying for."

    Quote

Yet the drumbeat of discontent over the army’s failures is growing louder among Russian analysts, who increasingly contemplate defeat in Ukraine.

    and

That outcome would shatter Putin’s reputation as an infallible leader. It would intensify infighting within the Kremlin and security services over blame for the worst military debacle since the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan

The next few weeks could see a lot of people disappearing! and not just in suspicious ways but a few will be thinking about their own safety and their families and would go to a safe house well away from Russia.

Bloomberg have also a separate story running that says the revenue of the Russian treasury is shrinking very fast. Lots of money going out not so much coming in. If Putin stops paying his henchmen what might they do?

Putin's decision-making is now officially up the yabby creek.

    Dan.

Kasparov himself said some kind of senate should replace Putin. End the autocracy. But yes, Kasparov would make a good politician or even president.

I wonder how much military equipment is left for Russia? How long can they absorb these losses and keep going, without the ability to replace what they have?

I did say Russia and China are "frenemies". The United States is tactically trying to tie up Chinese military resources with Taiwan, lest they be fed into the Ukraine theatre of war.

The problem with a conventional war against an opponent like Russia is both sides run down conventional weapons stocks quickly. This has been a problem for Ukraine and NATO who have raided armouries globally and shipped the weapons to Ukraine. There is limited production capacity to make new weapons. In a direct confrontation, it won't be long before both sides are down to nuclear weapons. If one side makes a breakout over a large geographical area and can run straight into your heartland, and nothing is left, tactical nukes come into play to arrest the advance.

If one side wants to do mass air raids of civilian or production centers like was done in WW II, the response will be nuclear. Aside from its inefficiency Nuclear weapons are one of the reasons this tactic is abandoned. Last time indiscriminate mass bombing from air happened was the Vietnam conflict (Rolling Thunder, Linebacker & Linebacker II).

Since modern wars tend to involve lots of movement, using geographical features to corral an enemies movement makes sense. Ukraine is currently using this to their advantage in the Kherson region by limiting Russian movement across the Dnipro river. Earlier in the Russian campaign the Russians used movement to create cauldrons and hammer the Ukrainian defences with artillery.

Ah here, this is absolutely not what the US is trying to do. Their approach towards Taiwan has nothing to do with the Ukrainian situation, and their backing of Taiwan is long-standing.

Aside from the United States, which country can rapidly expand weapons production? China. As it is the Russians are looking to North Korea. Suppose the shoe was on the other foot and it was Russias allies supplying advanced weapons for use in the Ukraine war? Chinese made weapons were a used against the Americans in Iraq. There are a stream of American politicians visiting Taiwan this year, why would they up the ante? China is much more integrated with the world economy than Russia is, Russia being relegated to the role of gas station. The nightmare for NATO and Ukraine is that Chinese production capacity gets turned on to serve the Russians. The Americans need to keep them in check, and China has it's long term strategy to pursue.

There is no such thing as a “tactical” nuclear weapon in Europe. Even boneheads know this. A nuclear weapon fired into Europe will be met with full scale attack on Russian nuclear assets including subs. The Russians know this with 100% certainty, everyone knows this. So, do us a favour!

Further, I’d bet there are some US generals of the opinion many Russian birds will have degraded to the point of non function. It’s a reasonable assumption. If Russia pushes too far there will be pressure in the US for a first strike.
