I only noticed because I was listening to the podcast yesterday, after having already watched the Chelsea game

That someone is magnus carlsen. It was really interesting actually. I saw the clip myself earlier I'm the week and was like how lame is it that real Madrid felt that they had to control the brand to such an extent that an interview with a chess player had to be edited to align with their marketing interests.

Yeah in retrospect in was quite interesting and a different take. I listen to a lot of different football podcasts and so much of the discussion is just Ronaldo talk.

Yeah, I found the Magnus Carlson bit very interesting too. He's not a man that would compromise for anyone. It was similar to how Real couldn't disclose that Bale was signed for a world record fee so as not to hurt Ronaldo's feelings.

Seems completely pointless to me. Might have been useful if they were doing a sports podcast round 1987...

    Instant fast forward.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

To be fair, there may be something on that I wasn't aware of and might watch because I heard about it there.

It must be amazing to be aware of every sporting event, and its kick off/throw in time, happening every weekend.

To be fair if it's half way through Friday and you are only hearing that a sports event is on that weekend are you really into it? You just can't be. Anyone who is into something knows it's on that weekend. For the redord I like when sometimes they talk about what the mother will watch and her takes on a sport before or after the guide. But the guide for me personally is absolutely pointless.

Yeah but I like sport in general. I don't necessarily have to be into the specific sport. If there is some good sport on that I don't know about I might put it on just to see it or have it on in the background.

Thomas Tuchel announcement out early enough for the lads today. Not a Chelsea fan but it caught me by surprise, change half the squad under one manager then sack him before there's time to bed in everyone.. a manager who won CL a year and a half ago. New owners going for continuity from the old regime

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,580 ✭✭✭The Davestator

Well the old regime was very successful, so it makes sense to copy it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

They aren’t copying the old regime. There is no Maria grinowskia or petr cech in this regimes organizational structure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,580 ✭✭✭The Davestator

I meant in the sense of getting rid of managers. Maria is a loss, but cech is certainly not. Great player but out of his depth. I am a Chelsea fan and we dont get attached to managers anymore!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

It may be similar to Roman’s early reign at Chelsea. Football was simple back then, you could throw money around and be stupid with it and still have a huge advantage. Now everyone has loads of money so you need to be rich and smart, not just rich.

Really enjoyed the interview with Rory Smith, he's always a very good listen. Not sure I'll read his book though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

I like Rory and I like Ken, but that interview bored me to tears. Turned it off after about 15 minutes.

Same! I was looking forward to it too, thought I'd love it. Genuinely fell asleep on the bus home listening to it haha.

To touch on Murph's tv guide, it's a bit pointless yeah, but the worst part of it for me is how fast he talks. Last week I was curious to know what was on and I caught maybe 10% of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,733 ✭✭✭sheroman01

Not even one mention of the queen on last Friday's pod - how funny but also refreshing! (I'm fairly sure there was no mention, open to correction though).

I'm fairly sure it was pre-recorded which they seem to do with a lot of friday's stuff.

They also didn't mention that all the football was called off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,582 ✭✭✭Still Ill

They mentioned that they were recording around 10AM so they didn't yet know if the matches would go ahead or not.

Found US Murph to be very performative and boring today.

There was a point where he was banging on about the existential angst induced by the '49ers being 0-1 and I just thought, honestly, who gives a fck?

Used to love US Murph back in the day, thought he had a gift for making the seemingly uninteresting interesting. But he's a fairly dull contributor these days IMO.

Maybe it's just me and I know there's been a dearth of sports over the weekend, but I felt the lads have seemed a bit jaded and flat: going through the motions a bit as of late.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,803 ✭✭✭✭siblers

US Murph seems like a persona to me where he's trying too hard to be entertaining , it's just a bit too OTT

Although I really enjoyed him a few weeks ago talking about that US commentator who died as he wasn't as full on but he's one of my lower ranked contributors

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,208 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Let's face it, American sports are all just incredibly dull, there's a reason they're all getting ****-faced in the stands 🤣

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I think part of the problem is that more people are interested in and exposed to American sports now. So we want actual analysis not being talked down to. I can't remember exactly what he was saying but something like " you guys know there is a punter, a kicker,...he had something else here..well there is also this guy called a long snapper". Most people know the basics of the sport, maybe not the long snapper part but it was a bit like you idiots at least know this much. Most of the first part was about him supporting San Francisco. We get it, you support the 49ers. Maybe give us some analysis though! Murph doesn't help here though. Going on about "oh Brian you are telling yourself that it shouldn't matter but it does, chuckle chuckle".

Jim Crawford isn't a very inspirational speaker anyway is he?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭Smell the glove

Most people don't to be fair. Honestly it's a very small percentage of people care about American sports let alone actually know the ins and outs of positions/tactics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,803 ✭✭✭✭siblers

In his defence, how someone interviews can be fairly different to them on the pitch/dressing room etc. He comes across like a decent fella though and obviously doing a good job for the U21s, huge improvement on Noel King,

I think the guys talk about sports they're interested in. So, they have a small interest in American football so we get some of that. Zero interest in horse racing, cricket, motor racing etc so pretty much none of them.

I have a very small interest in us sports, I watch 3 or 4 nfl games a year so it suits me
