For all you know she has already found more balance. You would have just missed it because you "forward wound" all of her scenes 😛

I've liked Singh. I don't think hers has a bad actor, more that her part demands a certain "front" being put forward as part of her role. She has to be the tough no-nonsense security chief - but I really liked her scenes with Number 1 when she was clearly more relaxed, and they had a cute rapport of two senior staff being candid and finding fun for themselves.

  • Registered Users Posts: 354 ✭✭eadrom

She was fantastic in that costume drama episode, took me a while to even recognise her. Got to show her range there a bit.

Definitely the character I was most worried about going in anyway, given the Khan connection, but quite like her by the end of the first season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,250 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Least they remembered to appoint a chief of security, unlike that other crowd who bring back Na'an for one episode, show her choke her duty and then leave again.

Choong is a known name to television and film fans, so her inclusion is likely to gain a few more eyes on screen and she has good rapport with Rebecca Romjin.

I think this was a good way to intentionally use the canon angle. She's knows the name is toxic, the world knows the name is toxic; there's no "shush it's a secret" twist I had initially bristled for. I'm sure we'll come back to her legacy in time but for now, her story was her own and all about her immediate past - not the sins of the father (as it were).

Yeah, exactly. Pre-release, I fully expected “Khan” to be a big reveal for the rest of her crew mates at some point during the season. But so far the only thing that connection has really done is to solidify that Khan is a known historical figure, which, actually, makes sense.

I'm not a major Trek fan but I've seen all the movies, a lot of random TNG and Discovery/Picard. I thought this was really solid and well above those other Trek TV shows.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭PhiloCypher

Funny I didn't think she (La'an) was overacted at all. The only reason I can imagine she feels like that to you is her characters a bit more abrasive then the rest of the cast, but that's down to her characters background.

As you've mentioned she's similar to Kira but what you see as Visitor finding a balance and correcting a flaw in her performance , I see more as giving them giving her character rough edges(an arc) to round off over the course of the series as she realises Sisko/the federation arent the enemy .

Well that was a nice nugget of a surprise to wake up to. Poor Ortega! And sure enough I guess the absence of focus on her in season 1 was because she was lined up for season 2.

Also, am liking the small bit of the crew members in silly hats. Ok, it's just two people so far ...

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

So we know who the new chief engineer will be - and it ain't Scotty. Indeed, it's a rather fantastic piece of casting IMO: Carol Kane. Perhaps most recently famous for co-starring in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, alongside a CV full of comedy roles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,284 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I know her mainly for 2 things - One of the ghosts in Scrooged and Penguin's mother in Gotham.

At least they didn't jump straight to Scotty. Though maybe the plan is a new engineer every season.

Miracle Max’s witch wife in The Princess Bride.

    Could be good!

Maybe they're going to take the "professor of the dark arts" tactic.

I got a bit of a fright when I saw the black outfit and thought she was gonna reveal herself as S31

I can't see them getting a lot out of the new chief engineer besides scenes of sitting around talking.

I haven't seen her in anything dramatic (At least I don't think so). Does she keep the high-pitched comedy-tone in dramatic roles? It is certainly an interesting choice and I'm glad they haven't gone to Scotty (Yet anyway). But I just can't get that voice out of my head. I'm assuming she doesn't. That she has a more serious-role voice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,008 ✭✭✭DoctorEdgeWild

I'm not crazy about the casting as I only know her from comedy roles, which hopefully this will not be! But any actor around that long must have some serious ability so I'll keep an open mind.

The people behind SNW have barely put a foot wrong so far so I've no reason to doubt their plans at all. Really looking forward to Season 2.

I don't get it. So a female engineer nothing new there. Belanna Torris was female just Klingon and not a full graduate from Starfleet mind but she still knew her stuff.

Carol Kane played a small but memorable role in one of the greatest films of the 80s, The Princess Bride.

Interesting, in a minor way. That's two Treks running concurrently with female-comedians cast as the Engineers. That'd be a fun thing to become a proper trend.

Whats the other Trek show. If it begins with a D don't even bother to mention it.

Take gender out and you have 4 comedy actors engineering star ships. As well as mentioned above you have Tig Notaro aboard Discovery (very occasionally, that ship seems to be run by the science division) then you have Paul Scheer aboard the Ceritos as Billups and Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog aboard The Protostar in Prodigy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭PhiloCypher

Love that the first teaser is a Ortagas scene(from an Ortagas episode hopefully) because they know she was one of the most popular characters yet didn't get an episode dedicated to her in the 1st season .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,637 ✭✭✭corkie

Probably just a clickbaiting article? But hopefully more than just another season ahead?

  • Registered Users Posts: 354 ✭✭eadrom

We were really like, 'Okay, let's pretend this is our last season. And let's absolutely go for everything that we wanted to do.'

Just another way of saying they’re giving it their all.

I say if it stays at only 10 episodes a season then SNW should have at least 10 seasons or even more hopefully.

Do some other excellent covers of Star Trek and The Orville themes as well. Worth checking out.

I watched the battle with the Gorn episode earlier.

I’m really enjoying the series and it being an adventure of the week rather that one story.

I don’t understand some of the choices in the characters. There doesn’t seem to be any purpose in using the characters of Chapel, Uhura and Noonien-Sing rather than completely original characters.

The characters of Chapel and Uhura here are nothing like they are in the Original Series - they are in fact new characters with the same names. Plus it creates an unnecessary continuity issue as now Pike was Uhura’s first Captain but she didn't have any interaction with him in The Menagerie. I’m not that precious about the continuity but they could have been given new names so that we don’t already know their fates.

And throwing in a descendant of Khan is unnecessary - La’an isn’t an Augment and the show already has a genetically enhanced character so why does there have to be a connection to Khan? And why was Kirk’s brother included? He served no purpose whatsoever. The new shows need less “threads” like this. I did see a headline about Kirk being in the show - I had assumed it was Jim Kirk, but hopefully it was only about Sam. I would be interested in Strange New Worlds leading into a series that covers Kirk’s last two years of his mission but established characters don’t need be showing up here. It makes it all feel like a small galaxy.

And is transporter chief Kyle supposed to be the same Kyle from the Original?

And is transporter chief Kyle supposed to be the same Kyle from the Original?

Kyle was a recurring character played first by English-born actor John Winston in Star Trek: The Original Series, and later by André Dae Kim in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He first appeared in "Tomorrow is Yesterday" and was given onscreen credit as "Transporter Chief". He had no set identity until Spock addressed him as "Lieutenant Kyle" in "Who Mourns for Adonais?".

    https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Kyle

Uhura was played by Nichelle Nichols, who appeared in sixty-six episodes. The character was voiced by her in two additional episodes, "The Enemy Within" and "The Menagerie, Part II", and appeared in stock footage in "The Paradise Syndrome". [3] For Star Trek's 30th anniversary, Uhura reappeared in archive footage from "The Trouble with Tribbles" and "Mirror, Mirror" that was used in the Deep Space Nine episode "Trials and Tribble-ations". Twenty-six year later, Uhura was portrayed by Celia Rose Gooding for her inclusion in the TOS prequel, Strange New Worlds. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Nyota_Uhura

Be-careful of reading the wiki links, may spoil additional episode of SNW, if your still watching them.

So I was watching an episode on TNG today "Conundrum". It the one were some Aliens take over Troy, Data and O'brien and take over 10 Forward.

Before O'brien beams down to the planet he grabs some pattern enhancers from a part of the Transporter room. It got me thinking. Maybe that is what's behind the Transporter room on Pikes Enterprise. Maybe they keep there pattern enhancers and other Transporter stuff there.

So hopefully we get to find out in season two or the coming seasons.

Pattern enhancers appear for the first time on Star Trek in this episode. Here, and in "Ship in a Bottle", three pattern enhancers are carried in a practical case. ~~ https://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/observations/powerplay.htm

Have to say, finally binged watched the lot and while there are some issues, but compared to most sci fi season1s, they are minor. They took some common sci fi tropes, one or two just stealing from other movies and made them into decent TV. Hopefully that continues, it would have held up on its own IMO which is something other Trek wouldn't have in recent years. Like a merge between some decent TNG episodes, with some TOS styling.

Season 2 to arrive June 15th, and a third season has already been greenlit.

Panning out to be a decent year of Trek. Picard season 3 has been a joy so far, and I really enjoyed the first season of SNW. And no Discovery!

All they need to do is More of the Same and they'll coast on the plaudits easily. A touch glib and can see why the lack of dry professionalism of the TNG era might annoy but this has been pure Space Adventure fun.

Looks fun. That new Kirk guy is still just not doing it for me at all though... from when we saw of him in season 1, and those bits in the trailer, he just doesn't at all feel like Kirk. I don't mind the character particularly, but it just feels like some other fella entirely.

A couple of points of that seem like specific digs at DSC, such as the captains catch phrase, and the classic Klingons. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,034 ✭✭✭✭Stark

He comes across like a generic CW superhero character rather than Kirk. The revolving door bit looked like he was trying to play a version of Clark Kent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,143 ✭✭✭ilovesmybrick

Yeah, it might be a lot of goodwill built up by Picard recently, SNW, LD, and even Prodigy, but that looks like fun. I like seeing proper klingons back, though I wonder if we'll see the OG TOS ones? Could be a fun nod to ENT. Forget the other damn ones altogether. And it's out so soon! We'l have a year straight of pretty good Trek which is fantastic stuff.

Pity what we had to sit through to get there...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,805 ✭✭✭Evade

Kirk is from Iowa, he just works in outer space! 0/10, unwatchable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,671 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Was thinking more character development in that trailer than all of DSC

And Kirk is still not doing it for me either, I know its a younger Kirk but should at least be somewhat like we know

    And proper Klingons thank god

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,441 ✭✭✭Acosta

Why must at least one character in everything, at some point say "I(or you) got this."? Nobody bloody talks like that.

Looks OK. The helmsman is still a bit annoying
