This lad thing is rather unnecessarily patronising.

Why aren't Irish pupils not making their own way to school so that space is freed up for refugees?

You have been educated there about the cso and their figures. Let that be that now. The lotto the weekend May have more accurate numbers.

Explaining is one thing, the new arrivals understanding is another.

teacher should communicate and do their job in English, they haven’t signed up for anything else…

The denial by some in this thread is mind blowing. About as clued in as the government some on here. It’s all puffy clouds, puppies and pillows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭EOQRTL

    No. I don't claim welfare and i've worked since i was 16.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭EOQRTL

I'm beginning to think we have some government bots on here tbh. Nobody could be that silly as to not realise this is a massive problem.

Again you think much of teachers do you, the idea that a teacher could not explain 12 o'clock to someone and if they had to would run to their union is beyond farcical.

If I could thank this post twice I would. That’s 100% fact there by you.

Maybe spin back through much earlier pages?

Not looking up sources right now to get exact numbers, but there are something like 7,000,000 people already internally displaced within Ukraine - i.e., yes, literally millions are being accommodated elsewhere in Ukraine.

Why are there plenty of spaces in hotels, guesthouses, hostels and airbnbs in Kyiv and elsewhere? Because very, very few people from outside, or indeed within Ukraine, are travelling there for holidays. What with the war, and all. If I did happen to own a guesthouse there, I'd still have it up on booking.com, though.

I'm not in denial about anything. There's an accommodation crisis in this country and it's unwise to take in any more refugees since we clearly cannot house them.

I just fail to see the purpose of this thread. At best it's just creating an echo chamber for like-minded people to spread all kinds of rumour and innuendo. At worst it's fueling the kind of hatred and resentment which can lead to some very ugly outcomes.

There's a world of difference between healthy skepticism on the one hand, and outright dismissal on the other.

It's the work of a couple of minutes to run a query on a Welfare or Revenue database to pull the number of claimants/people paying PAYE. It will be a very accurate number. There's no real reason to doubt the veracity of those numbers, and no real reason to doubt the numbers that Justice's immigration service also supply to the CSO. Allowing for human error and delay, they'd be no more than 1% out and a month old. Let's even double or triple that, to allow for temps working over the summer, supervisors on leave, etc. It's still only going to be out by a few hundred people.

Yer man thedart though? Just goes "nah, I've my own figure, it's only 1 in 1000 working" - which would put the figure at 50-ish, nationally. Amazing I happen to know three of them myself, a whole 6% of his total!

Does it matter why they are available?

Kyiv is relatively normal and safe shouldn't they be staying there where there is accommodation and food and easier communication ?

Wouldn't it make a lot more sense for us to support that financially instead of tents and **** converted supermarkets and factories and occupying all our hotels here?

And thats just Kyiv. We could fund whole modular camps and schools in western Ukraine for a fraction of the cost and disruption caused here and less disruption for their kids. They cpuld even see their spouses more often. Their kids can continue normal schooling in their language.

Has anyone questioned why there are plenty of hotels available to book on Booking.com in Ukraine?

I wouldn't claim to be expert on the tourist industry, but I have this hunch that Ukraine might have been getting lower tourist numbers this Summer for some mad reason..........

"Fake news, fake news!" Whatevs, Mr Trump. You repeatedly asserting bollocks doesn't make it the truth.

On the abuse again today, classy.

Just accept cso figures aren’t accurate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,637 ✭✭✭maninasia

Its a bit toxic true but that is partly because RTE and newspapers here dont share the real concerns of many and even refer to local residents ludicrously as 'far rights groups'.

I'm for supporting Ukraine but not in the stupid way we are going about things here, in a country that ALREADY undergoing its worst accommodation crisis in modern history. The authorities are absolute mumpties the way they have foisted this on the general population, on students, on cpuntry towns, on council estates, on overburdened schools and health services.

And the absolute racism of them getting priority and 230 euro a week while other refugees are given 38 euro a week and placed at the bottom.

You appear to have created an account in the past month just to post repeatedly in this thread and you have the temerity to accuse others of being "bots". FFS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,512 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

No abuse there, I said what you were saying was bollocks, not that you were one.

Just accept the CSO figures are way more accurate than your "It's 1 in 1,000, because I said so." Still waiting on your evidence for all of the Ukrainians not really being Ukrainian. Won't hold my breath.

    I think it's a couple of reasons:

    1. Boards has always had a dole-bashing thread. And government-bashing threads. This allows the types that join in on those to combine into one
    2. Propagandizing through evocative words and hectoring (though, there's nothing new there.)
    3. Oddly, 'new users' who apparently spend time on things like Ukrainian Telegram and Facebook sites to find reasons to cast refugees in a bad light. Very strange, you'd think with all the whinging about how hard things are they'd spend more time, I dunno, working? Earning money?
    4. The latest weirdness is that those disagreeing with the anti-Refugee gang, are now being accused of working for the government. That's also not unusual here.

Really, it's sad. There's no reasoned discussion about the crises facing the refugees here, but there's lots of time for personal attacks.

We have wires crossed there, part of my last post you quoted was not suppose to be in direct reply. I wasn’t including you as being in denial. Quote didn’t post as intended.

As for the post I am quoting now perhaps your opinion you may want to change from clarity above.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,325 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

If you want to campaign for 230 Euro a week to be immediately handed over to every person who presents themselves at an immigration desk with no documentation and claims asylum, then you can do that if you want but I definitely wouldn't support you on it.

Ukrainians are not asylum seekers. they have already been granted temporary protection. Some might choose to seek it at a later stage.

Sure did. There were hyundais but they all broke down early

So plenty of rooms available for Ukrainians in their own country then, no need to fly them all over Europe.

I imagine all these hotels are staffed with Ukrainians who are working in these hotels.

How mad is it that we fly Ukrainians in Ireland to fill up our own hotels whilst fully staffed Ukrainian hotels are empty and ready for guests?

Heimat is really a very powerful thing and a whole lot of our Ukrainian refugees are in that split family demographic. On balance they will choose to go home. We will most likely get to Year 2 of the Directive but doubt we will hit Year 3 , at which point all of this will lapse.

Oh, you might not have heard the news. Russia invaded Ukraine. And lots of Ukrainians didn't really want to be killed so they fled. Others didn't, or couldn't, flee and they are now dead as a result
