Toasted Sandwiches .... and I mean Proper Toasted Sandwiches!

Is there anywhere (Cafe or otherwise) that know how to make proper toasted sandwiches? - I mean say if I say "Can I have a cheese toasted sandwich please" - I get "do you want white white or brown bread?" (well first of all I am thinking in my head - No, brown bread toasted sandwich is just plain wrong!) - so then white it is "sit down over there I will bring it over" .

When it finally comes its 2 bits of white bread toasted with a bit of melted cheese in it that collapses as you are eating it leaving all the filling falling out of it!- or melted cheese sticking to the 'greaseproof' paper or paper bag - sorry lads that is not a Toasted Sandwich .

A Toasted sandwich is what you get when you buy a Sandwich Toaster from TESCO for around 7 quid and you put your 2 bits of buttered bread into the Sandwich Toaster along with the filling and then close the lid and a few minutes later you take the toasted sandwich out of the Sandwich and its 'pinched' all the way round thus encapsulating the filling .. its lovely ... OH God I fancy a toasted sandwich now!

So anyone know if actually any cafe in Ireland can make a 'proper' toasted sandwich like that? - I mean am I using the wrong terminology maybe? - I have tried so far "Can I have a cheese cheese and tomato sauce toasted sandwich" and I have also tried "can I have a cheese toastie please" both have got me the same results. - is it called something else in Ireland? , is that where I am going wrong?

Maybe specify that you was a toasted sandwich from a toasted sandwich maker and not a grilled sandwich. I know you probably said fairly much that already, but emphasise what you don't want as well.

Declan and Donald's deli on Bolton Street do an amazing toasted sandwich. No frills just stacked. I recommend the club sandwich. You wouldn't even know it was there if you weren't local.

here's a possibly controversial opinion - what you are looking for is not a toasted sandwich.

toasting involves exposing bread to radiant heat. you're cooking bread by exposing it to direct heat. so one of those clamshell doohickeys is not a toaster.

No cafe uses the sandwich toasters you are looking for because they are inefficient for what they are doing, they are a totally one trick pony whereas the grill/panini type is much more flexible.

Now what I can't find is a sandwich toaster that does not 'seal' the filling in two triangles, I want one where the sandwich is not cut/sealed diagonally cos you can't then put an egg into your sandwich without ruining it when you close the toaster! Used to have one years ago but the don't seem to make that type anymore.

The perfect toastie is ham, cheese, onion. I don't like tomatoes in them myself because they are hotter than lava when eating.

Replace "inefficient" with "expensive"

The grill/ pannini type is more "economical".

Newmarket on Fergus in 2001. It was before the Motorway/bypass opened. A little garage with a little Deli. A real mickey mouse affair. Well fook me sideways. It remains the best Deli sandwich ever. They had batch loaf. My work colleague and I ordered a toasted special on batch that was ham, cheese, tomato and onion. Epic! Done on a little grill thing. So good that we went back in to take a non toasted version with salad on our work trip to the Cliffs of Moher. I'll never forget milling the non toasted version at the cliffs, but remembering the toastie from earlier! We got this on the road long before Motorway services ever existed here. A toastie memory that stays with me! I've only matched it at home.

Butter inside? I have never done that with a toasted sandwich. Always butter the outside though.

Preferred ingredients are cheese, scallion, tomato & Coleman's mustard. Some thick ham is good too.

The Croque Monsieur is of course the best kind of toasted sandwich.

Basically gruyere cheese, nice bit of smoked ham, whipped eggs, seasoning and French mustard blended with mayo to personal preference.

However, if you've never heard of this before, I urge you to give it a try before you judge it....

Mix of good French cheeses - brie, gruyere etc, tinned peaches well sliced or mashed, torn fresh basil and then either a drizzle of good honey or some chipotle dressing depending on whether you want it sweeter or a bit spicier.

maybe not these days - the last sandwich toaster I bought was in Tesco's it was around 7€ ... just looked on Tesco site now its €15 ... bloody inflation .... plus you cannot afford the electric to put it on now of course there is that too

My favourite toasty when done in a proper old school toastie maker....beans and cheese....honestly...don't knock it til you try it.

But toasties are now for me really done in a pan...lots of butter bit of oil...put a metal weight or something on it...some nice cheese and ham on the inside. Yum.
