Surely there's a loophole that they could exploit in that you can only start/stop a charge at a SuperCharger in a non Tesla via an application on a smart device, hence that device becomes the screen which displays the amount of kWh consumed.... It would also be the common sense thing to do..

Though having said all that, and with experience of Germany and German bureaucracy, I understand fully that they'll make this a ball ache for Tesla and the other providers

At present the Tesla app displays what went into the car, not what was consumed, this means Tesla is cheaper for all of us as Tesla don't charge for the losses (all other providers do charge for the losses). If they are forced through red tape to look at consumed then this has the potential for higher charging costs for all...

This is simply beurocratic nonsense. As someone of German descent I love a good bit of red tape but this seems a bit luftkopfe!

Who wants to bet that the kW counter display unit has to be sourced in Germany.

Is it a kW or a kWh that is required? As in, do they need to show current speed (pun not intended) or energy consumed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,156 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

I thought they already changed over about a year ago where they previously only charged for what the car took on, but charge for everything the charger distributes... meaning we now have to pay for everything including losses and having climate control on while charging......

The calculation used to bill for Supercharging has been updated. Owners will also be billed for kWhs consumed by the car going toward the HVAC system, battery heater, and other HV loads during the session. Previously, owners were only billed for the energy used to charge the battery during the charging session.

Owners may see a noticeable increase in billed kWh if they are using energy-consuming features while charging, e.g., air conditioning, heating etc. This is more likely in extreme climates and could be a 10-25 kWh difference from what a customer experienced previously.

but that is easy to implement. And probably desired considering the amount of less techie users the Ev world get every day. I got petrol for my rental at an automated station in the middle of nowhere on a mediterranean island. There was an ATM like station where you select the pump no, fuel type and payment method. The thing would accept cash and credit cards.

Fair enough, I was on free SuC at the time so probably laughed that one off

That's all you need for a 15 or 20 minute stop.

Not busy at all. I bet the free stall is the last one. Anyway it on the map. Finally!!

This will be very busy, there are a lot of pre2017 S and X (S especially) with free SuC that will be popping there once a week to cover Dublin area driving for free. I sold my free SuC S to a couple 10minutes away and they will be doing it for sure

I broke my charging speed record last night at Sandyford. I started from Croke Park with navigation. The car preconditioned, arriving with 7.77% SoC and 46.2 Celsius on the battery pack. Charging jumped straight to 237kW but dropped in about 1 minute to 206kW. After about 4 mins it was at 160 kW and SoC of 25%. Now about the Northwood. When is this one ready? :)

I was the only one at 9 pm. I live close to the location and I see it on the map and pass by it at least twice daily. Too short period to form a statistic but so far not crazy busy.

wait till all the legacy free SuC users on the south side realise its there, unfortunately I don’t think it will ever be much use to me being Dublin based unless I have a short notice trip that needs the range

I'm curious if it will have any impact on the ESBs 50kW on the Park & Ride, which is at around 10h/day usage. I won't use it regularly but knowing it is there for emergencies is great. Going to work I pass beside the Northwood planned location so basically will touch both in one go.

I wouldnt think so. Everytime Ive gone past its always busy with shoppers but never seen any Teslas there. Mind you with theres a fair few M3s out there now.

..and this is the point of the SuC, splash and dash, you don't need high SoC, just enough to get you to the next SuC (if enroute) or home at a low SoC for next top up. When I was travelling through Scotland it was all 10/15 minute stops so I'd be arriving at next SuC in single digit SoC for high charge rates and short stopping time.

Same here, I saw some European trips in a Model 3 and people were stopping to charge with 40%+ SOC "just in case". When the car could go best case an extra 200+km, you lose time because of the lower charging speed when battery is that high, and you lose time charging extra "just in case". 5% buffer imo is enough on the Model 3, the arrival SOC prediction is so good I almost always arrived within 1% of what it predicted.

Most often I was leaving when the car said 5 - 10 mins left to continue trip (it wanted to arrive with a predicted 20%)(when not limited by walking the puppy or needing longer stops for eating), then vary my max speed to arrive below 5% at the next supercharger. Only in Germany with the unrestricted Autobahn I was giving it an extra 5-10 mins.

the arrival SOC prediction is so good I almost always arrived within 1% of what it predicted.

This was the case for me also until I started driving 'enthusiastically' on the autobahn..... At that point the car re-routed me to a SuC that was much closer to me as it knew I was acting the eejit!!

And it is on the website. The map looks way much better than 2-3 years ago. Too bad the NW and SE are neglected.

There's a couple more to be announced this year too. Not sure about the north west but I know the south east will be addressed.

I'd say, M9 between Carlow & Kilkenny, M11 south of Gorey, and then Sligo, Cavan, Roscommon, Castlebar & Derry, and you'd probably have 95% of teh country covered for the lowest of range Tesla's out there...

Ah yes, here we go again……

Surely they realise quite quickly that the car isn't charging?

The large "Tesla" written across the top of the charger must also be a giveaway.

The average EV owner will never have heard of Tesla or will only vaguely be aware of it. It’s just another charging network like eCars and Easy Go that they spotted on some app like PlugShare.

Yes, in Castlebellingham today and I was the only Tesla there, while an ID.4 was on the eCars CCS, with an eCorsa using the AC, and then another eCorsa arrived and parked in the dummy bay next to the 2 eCars charger bays….. as they walked past the Tesla chargers on their way into the shop, they had a look at the Tesla plugs, and I overheard the girl Telling the guy that yes, it’s the same fitting they have on their car, so it should work….

I left at that point but I’ve no doubt they came back and tried the Tesla CCS plug…..

Fcuk Me I would not own a non Tesla EV in Ireland with the current motorway charging network the way it is…….
