Definitely get a home charger, trying to put the guts of 60 Kw into a battery using a granny cable would drive you stone crazy 🤬

    Not. Jealous. At. All

My quote from 'em (despite a rewire only 10 years ago) ran to €2500 and took over a month and lots of chasing them ... Ah well - more phonecalls

If you're getting all the electrical work done anyway .. get the wiring put in for a charger and brought to a location you like

A Zappi (the more popular one for Solar integration, smart too) retails for about a grand new including VAT, (edit - add URL: https://myenergi.ie/product/zappi/# ) your sparks can likely pick it up a little cheaper at trade price and mount it.

Apply for the grant first (only takes a few minutes online, usually an hour or three for the approval to land, and you have 6 months to be complete, and apply for the payment)

Simple really - and absolutely a good futureproofing option.

I think that it would be good forward planning to get one installed if you are anyway likely to get an EV in the near future (within 3 to 5 yrs).

Especially with PV panels, you could charge your car for free some of the time.

Smart V Non-smart: Difference is the charger itself and the cost difference is probably in the order of €400-500 for the smart charger.

Emailed SEAI asking about the September cutoff dates for Smart/standard chargers. Below is the response. Looks like date has changed to Jan 1st. to give time to register smart products and sell off existing stock

SEAI will be introducing the use of a Smart Charger product list to its EV Home Charger grant scheme from the upcoming 1st September onwards.

To smooth this change over, we have decided to introduce a transition phase for the implementation of the Smart Charger product list. From 1st September to 31st December inclusive, applicants applying online will be able to choose a registered Smart Charger product or choose “other” if their product is not yet registered. This will allow time for product suppliers to continue to register their Smart Charger products but it will also allow suppliers time to sell down any existing stocks of older EV Chargers which meet current product standards but will fail to meet the new Smart Charger product criteria as outlined on the Triple E register for grant eligible charger products.

Then from 1st January 2023, the “other” category will be removed and from that date forward, only Triple E registered (ie those under category “SEAI Grants Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment”) Smart Charger products will be available for selection by consumers at application stage and eligible for grant support under the EV Home Charger grant scheme.

Grant is 600 and typical cost of zappi all in is 1300 so it will cost you 700 over grant. The zappi is important for solar compatibility. However the plastics on it will change colour from white to yellow and the screen might age. The other side is the grant may be reduced to zero in a few years.

Just beware you need a lot of solar panels to charge a car and car needs to be home 10am-2pm to fill up from sun. You probably should be aiming for a 7kW panel system if you intend filling the car, and even then it may take multiple days to fill car and this may be possible only during summer months. That said filling car back up us a great way to use up excess solar energy.

Is it possible to just buy that charger on Amazon and get them to install it?

How would the grant work if I'm only paying for an install or can I still get the full 600

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,559 ✭✭✭Thumper Long

You’ll get hit with import duty on an item of that value so probably another 30-40 yoyos

I'm no expert - but as long as you include the receipts for the install and the charger (and the combined values are over €600) you get the full amount .. if the total is under the threshold, you only get back what you spent.

If you're a sparks, IIRC, you can't claim your labour - only the cost of the charger (but given a Zappi is a clear grand direct from MyEnergi.ie ..)

45 minutes!! I wouldn't even have the tools out of the van.

    Was cabling in place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,479 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

My install took just over two hours and that's with the house being pre-wired, one of the lads had to leave to get something and the two other lads just stood around talking outside. Made no difference to me as I was just playing PlayStation, just thought it was strange. Also not sure why they needed 3 lads!

Was a quick job yep. May have helped that the charge point was 1.5 metres from the fusebox perhaps.

20yr old house and tbh I had no idea what state the wiring was in, but seemed to be no problem. Enjoying using it now and no longer have to plan my evening charges like I did with portable charger.

I ordered a charger off Tesla. Is it best to use one of their recommended sparks off the Tesla website or should I look elsewhere? My next door neighbour said he paid 300 after the grant which sounds cheap compared to what I’m reading on here. Unfortunately he is away so can’t find out who he used.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭Mike2006

The Tesla unit is easy to install. I have just installed mine last weekend.

€300 would be good value but if it is a very straight forward install then it could be done but there were about €140 of materials for my install and it took about 4 hrs to do but I brought all of the cables in the back of the boxes instead of surface mounting.

The houses are only 4 years old so may be an easy install. Did you do it yourself?

    Hi All,

I have ordered the Tesla wall connector and have a quote for €400 to install by a registered electrician.

He is saying though that i will need a load balancer too and the Gen 3 wall connector do not have built in load balancer - he is saying that the grant requires load balancing now.

    Any thoughts?

I have no electric showers in the house and no big loads at all (thats what she said) so really there is no need to load balance. But is it really a SEAI requirement?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Going by old Jim’s post on the last page you can get anything up until Jan and select other if it’s not on the list. Not sure if the load balancing is required in the new rules anyway. But now it is not a problem without.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭Mike2006

    HI,

Yes - my dad is an electrician and I am elec eng so he can certify it for the grant (through his contractor).

Ask the installer what’s the reason for the load balancer?

You could very well have a low main fuse, or something else that has a big draw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,817 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

My dad got a Garo charger and had his electrician install both his car and mine will only pull 4.1kw from it per hour , cable tested as ok, any thing obvious it could be (all internal dip switches for setting output already double checked )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,321 ✭✭✭✭KCross

Looks like it’s limited to 16A.

so, something along the chain is saying “max 16A allowed”.

Check the writing on the cable and make sure it’s rated for 32A.

could be an internal switch or software setting on the charger set to 16A

could be the car limiting it. Did you try another car?

you just have to rule one possibility out at a time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,817 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

cable tested and happened on their eqa and my etron so it’s not the cable or the car, There are dip switches internally but he reckons he has checked all of those …

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,182 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

everything points to a charger setting.

    what model of Garo charger?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,321 ✭✭✭✭KCross

Software settings on the charge point? Does it have an app?

Regardless of testing the cable.... what are the markings on the cable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭Manion

There's a model that only supports 16A. GLK2T216A230V, so even if the jumpers are set correctly, if that's all it's supports, that's all you'll get. Did he supply the chargers or did you source yourselves?

No app unfortunately, it’s the menekes cable that came with the eqa id have to check it.
