Religion may have helped early humankind but as we've evolved we've more or less left it behind, the Western/civilized world has largely outgrown religion and no longer needs it to survive, to explain things, to function from day to day...we don't need it to get our morals and values...yes we bring it out every now and again for ceremonies and traditions etc...but we've stopped using it as a guide to live by.

The same can't be said for the Arab world, it's still in the dark ages and that wont change, devout Muslims can't coincide with the modern world the West has adopted because they're still married to their holy book which promotes all kinds of savagery and atrocities.

And even though not all Muslims are terrorists, the reality is most take their religion very seriously which in turn makes them think a lot of things we deem as savage and appalling, to be okay and justified.

Losing an eye, pierced liver and nerve damage...unless his in top tip shape health wise before the attack, he will likely have a very long road to recovery...I'm fearful that we will see the worst outcome from this I'm afraid

And he's still on a ventilator. He's 75 years old. Very serious indeed. Poor man. I hope he survives.

These are fair questions. I think it is difficult to justify a ban on the head covering alone but full burqa, I would go with what the English Tory MP Philip Hollobone said, he requested that Muslim constituents who wish to visit him in his surgery and who ordinarily wear a burqa take it off as he insisted on seeing constituents faces. Shouldn't be too much to ask.

I was thinking of a quote from the aftermath of the Hebdo attacks in 2015, can't remember who said it but seemed apposite:

"It isn't Islamophobia if they really are trying to kill you."

You see the knuckle dragging Islamic animals on Twitter (see below) celebrating this attack on the poor man.

The usual suspects on here trying to make excuses for it as well. I do hope he pulls through but at his age it's probably touch and go.

Some of those lovely comments that are ok with twitter

Hmm, my initial reaction coming from a place of limited medical knowledge was "This doesn't sound so terrible compared to what I feared we might be hearing about severed arteries, spinal injuries, etc." But as you say things that seem recoverable from now could deteriorate...

Nicked Artery will kill you fast, nicked liver, stomach or intestine will kill you slowly

Nope, considering we have to observe rules and traditions if we are to enter a mosque…places of business etc.

also, here is one… every financial institution I know, banks, building society and credit unions has a sign demanding that all motorcycle or moped riders remove their headgear before entering…ie. Helmets…

do they also demand that female Muslims would remove their burqa or whatever face covering ? If not, WHY not ?

People need to choose a side on this and if you in any way are an apologist for the attacker should be forced to live in Iran/Saudi Arabia for a year. See how your woke shite goes down there.

True. And I've certainly no issue obeying the customs when entering mosques. Contrary to the attempts of some on here to paint me as some kind of demented far right fascist, I've been in a mosque (the largest one in Malaysia), and found it very impressive and moving. Not quite for me, but neither are Christian churches.

Lisa Smith in Ireland. Have been a number in the UK, France and elsewhere. I think it's a lot higher than 1 one in a 1000. The majority are male, no-ones denying that but putting this into the 'men are toxic' frame favoured by some elements of the left is not going to work. Which is what you're trying to do, aren't you?

Even when we broaden it out to include examples of terrorism unrelated to Islam, we find several prominent female terrorists:

    (1) IRA and similar - Marian Price, Dolours Price, Mairead Farrell, off the top of my head.

    (2) The far left German terrorist group Baader-Meinhof was named after the two leaders, Andreas Baader and Ulrika Meinhof. Several of the other prominent members were also women.

Have been more than a few female Palestinian suicide bombers also. I know some folk don't agree that the Palestinian campaign is terrorism due to the Israelis engaging in acts of alleged repression/instigation, but that's for a different thread.

If you type in 'Salman Rushdie' and 'Allah' into twitter, prepare to see the true face of Islam.

I did, thousands praising the attack in the vilest of manners.

but it's only 1-10000 nutters. 🤔 I have lived in the ME all you have to do is the wrong thing when someone is looking and you can fall afoul. And the worst thing is you can't tell if it's the old guy or someone young that will take offence. Older tend to be a bit more open minded lived through tougher times. Best thing is do not draw attention and just get on with it.

Yeh, we all know about it Sunni/Shia split. But are you seriously suggesting Sunni’s had no problem with Rushdie?

Sunni extremists from ISIS and Al Qaeda to the Muslim Brotherhood wanted him dead, regardless of the Iranian fatwa.

Speculation/news so far that the attacker had Iranian sympathies.

But if the pierced liver was the big danger would the agent not have mentioned that first and highlighted it? Maybe he didn't want to be passing judgement on relative seriousness of different things when he doesn't know for sure...

Well said Bill Maher & Piers Morgan

Not 'you' personally! But how many people have been killed by terrorists in Ireland?

But in the US more people have been killed in mass shootings by disgruntled teens in the last few years then by terrorists.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

The two gay men murdered and 1 other man lost an eye from the same Muslim man in Sligo earlier this year amazing how that story dropped off the news so quickly

There seems to be some with short memories around here.

Bill Maher well said…Piers Morgan is an opportunistic parasite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,799 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

Yeah Bill Maher while funny, has a great way of getting the message across. Piers Morgan is trying to be a knight in shining armour but comes off as a loser dressed in tinfoil.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

Shia Islam tends to be more relaxed than Sunni Islam.

Don't get me wrong it still has incredible violence, hate for women, gays, Jews, etc etc etc. Just less than Sunni Islam, which is much stricter about following Mohammads command, word and deed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,242 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

As soon as it was known that it was an Islamic attack it dropped from the media and consciousness.

more people have been killed in mass shootings

And even more in traffic accidents. What matters is that these attacks are attacks on our values and freedoms, not the body count.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,189 ✭✭✭Brucie Bonus

No its not. There is no head of all Muslims. The religion doesn't entail doing what a pope of sorts dictates. There are numerous sects and beliefs. Christianity covers Protestants, catholics, church of England, Anglicans, evangelics, Mormons, and so on.

George W. said God chose him. There are senior Republicans in the US who think supporting Israel will bring Jesus back. Our own leaders use to discuss the path of the nation with religious leaders.

This thread is about justifying attacking all Muslims and using Rushdie to do it. Its shameless.

It could be as simple as you don't feed these muppets. Attention seekers etc...

On the other hand I'm pretty sure this thread will investigate it, or it might have been done already.

Anyway I hope Rushdie pulls through. It's fooking scary to be hunted for years and years because of one book.

The whataboutery is precisely because they are attacking our values and freedoms.

Yeah both analogies were wrong and I shouldn't have given any thought about replying in the first place. I'm not going into any more whataboutery about Christianity or other religion when we all know which religion is to blame here.
