It just occurred to me, I don't actually have curtains, no need with Mountains and forests as my neighbours 😉

RTE News last night had a piece about a Ukrainian woman and her child who have been with a family in Laytown since March. She is now looking for new accommodation as the family circumstances have changed. Tellingly the Ukrainian women herself said 4 months is too long to be sharing a house with a host family! So reading between the lines everyone has had enough in that house.

This is the area I live in ..... East Meath. I was on a long loop walk this afternoon from Laytown to Gormanston and back along the beach. I started at Laytown which is full of Ukrainians in B&B's and host families. Then the road goes past Mosney , the Direct Provision centre, again which is full.... then about 4KM further along the same road is the back entrance to Gormanston Army Camp, with big tents all over the place , also full.

It unbelievable in such an already densely populated and small area the amount of refugees and asylum seekers we are housing here. And that's before the 569 "temporary" 5 year modular homes get the go ahead.

Realistically what is the plan here? Even if we had enough builders and enough building materials, how can the Government magic up enough houses for these people if they don't want them in tents, hotels, B&B's and army camps this Winter? I also don't see how they can prioritize and fast track houses for these people and not for the 10K Irish homeless? Meanwhile week on week we keep taking more Ukrainians............so what is the plan?

I'm sure any of us who's experienced sharing, sleeping on a friends sofa (college days), perhaps in between rental properties knows full well, that whilst appreciated of course its not a very comfortable position to be in, long term, with all the best will in the world. I believe a lot of very decent people went into these arrangements out of kindness but really didn't grasp what it entailed. They also naively thought this was short term.

Are you aware of any updates re the Planning application for nearly 600 temporary homes for Ukranian refugees ONLY in Laytown 🤔 Meath for some reason seems to be the choice of destination with our government 🤔

There is no plan. We don’t have politicians with the ability or interest in forming a plan. No point talking about the Irish homeless, the government don’t care about them either.

The Ukrainians are not like the other refugees we have taken in, there is no chance they will tolerate anything less than excellent treatment in the long term. If standards drop the government’s virtue signalling will backfire and they will end up being called anti immigrant racists themselves.

McEntee want's them close to her.

But not that close that she'd bring some home.

I can guarantee you one thing that's 100%.

Not one person posting on this issue no matter what their views can answer your question.

    "What is the plan "

Indeed didn't she promise refuge and suddenly changed her mind, do we know was she in Gormanstown to cut the opening ribbon 🤔 she and Heather Humphries seemed very keen to welcome and be filmed doing so, Ukrainian refugees at Dublin Airport when this charade started 🤔

I've had enough. It's time to call this for what it is.

The bottom line is that providing (or advocating for) further support for these people - many of whom are now here for economic, not life-threatening reasons - is now effectively supporting discrimination against Irish natives and EU citizens already here and who are being pushed down already massive lists for essential services in favour of these new arrivals. This isn't just a Social Welfare issue (because that's another tactic used to try and deflect from that point) - even those not on social housing or medical card lists are losing out by the overwhelming demand being placed on our health, housing and services generally.

That's what Government policy has brought us to. We're not capable of supporting both needs, and it's clear that their needs are somehow more important than ours. Our elected officials, who we elect and who are to represent us and our interests, have completely abdicated that responsibility in favour of providing unlimited supports - that we are paying for! - to anyone who turns up from the "warzone" (and I use that term loosely given that the majority of the country is not under siege).

The real question now is what it'll take to get the Irish out on the streets to defend and protest for their ACTUAL rights and entitlements to the services and supports that they pay dearly for.

I dont know, nobody does. The planning application was halted temporarily on 8th June after uproar locally. https://www.independent.ie/regionals/louth/news/ukrainian-refugee-campsite-in-laytown-halted-for-now-41731829.html

However I don't think it was halted due to the uproar more that it was a flaw in the application. The state apparently has nothing at all to do with this. It is a private enterprise. Local TDs and Govt representatives got an almighty roasting about it, I think they were shocked at the reaction from 99% of locals, but the only one who pinned her colours publicly to the mast was Senator Sharon Keogan. She was opposed to it.

Helen McEntee is indeed in the Meath East constituency but is far more involved in stuff in the truth Meath area of Navan, Kells, Nobber (where she is from), Trim. Laytown Bettystown and Mornington are odd, a bit of an anomaly , we really should be part of Louth, only 5km from Drogheda but technically we are Meath. We tend to fall between the stools of Louth and Meath politically , yet East Meath is the fastest growing constituency in the country!

We are certainly being dumped on now, also hundreds of Irish people who cannot afford to buy in Dublin are also trying to get housing in Louth/East Meath due to the links of the M1 motorway and Belfast-Dublin trainline.

but why on earth is nobody in RTE or other media outlets asking this? RTE ran that segment last night on the Ukrainian woman here in Laytown but they didn't think at the end of asking "so what is the plan?" Its like the elephant in the room at this stage. Its farcical!

A 10 year old would ask this question ! Surely Govt can't just rely on the odd hotel that isn't booked out (are there any?) that might free up some space, or the odd GAA facility that doesn't have matches, or some more hosts that simply forgot to check their phone or emails until today? Its insanity and its unfair on people coming here too to be put indefinitely in tents. However the only upshot is that word might get out that we are full?? And some of these people might divert to other countries?

I do love my country, but you're seriously asking about a plan?

And didn't Leo and his partner announce that they were taking one in, with a big fanfare tadaaa.... they made it sound like they were getting a new pet...

'No virtue signalling has been done with regards to the Ukrainian Refugee situation'.. 🤔

That's interesting, I understood the planning application was in essence the state funding this albeit through a private entity, Housing charity, developer etc. I'm guessing the planning application is in the name of the contractors with contracts signed with government, obviously we'll be paying for it eventually. I've many friends I'm Meath and no fans of McEntee at all .

    Thanks for update.

They are getting a lot more than their monthly wage. If a man is here with his family it means (or is supposed to mean) that he has at least three children, or is incapable of staying in Ukraine to fight for one reason or another.

€200 per week would be payment + i think €25 per child. I guess each parent gets €200 so that could be €475 income per week for the family.

Average wage is €600 per month. So even a single individual is bringing in more than their monthly wage by being here. Everything else is free (clothes, food, acommodation, toys etc.)

Surprised they didn't order caviar too.

You really think the media is going to raise any issues around refugees at this time? Not a chance, you'd be ripped to bits for even asking a single question that made you look like you weren't welcoming them with open arms. No dissent is allowed. You know what social media is like too, it could be a career ender for a TV or radio host, or a local politician or councillor.

Sure in the last few weeks, I have heard about 3 or 4 interviews in the media about the cost of living crisis, and usually single mums are great examples to use, telling us how they have no money, back to school is coming and they can't have a day out with the kid(s). Not once did I hear any interviewer ask, "...and are you getting fully supported financially by the child's father?". I don't think it would be an unacceptable question to ask in the context of the interview, but you'll never hear it.

So he did exactly what he said he would do? What's your issue with it?

Come on Dempo! You should know by now. I was being my usual sarcastic git self.

If I remember correctly she said, basically, there was feck all for them to do around there. Open to correction.

So true , the only 2 I've heard ask difficult questions in RTE are Katie Hannon and Sarah McInerney, the rest are cowards, Lord Pompous Hayes , skirts around the issue gently not wishing to offend , Virgin Media news consumed by Virtue signalling, lots of fluffyness , the Papers basically a press office for Government.
