Grass is tight alright but they’re getting nearly 5 kg of meal. Just a few raw lads in it. Was thinking of moving up in quay and money. I don’t know

Usually mix minerals with a small bit of soya bean .....can't beat a bit of SB for stores

Had a few bullocks coming up on 30 months so sent them into larry this morning....

Had a decent bullock FR P+ 3+.....i was borderline not taking him in..i just thought he could be an O- so I could get the QA bonus...(1 movement, 200 days resident)

No fear of Larry selling that meat as QA but I wont get a cent of it🤬...

In that situation, am I better off holding onto that animal for another 6 months or to whenever they are stuck for cattle and just put weight on him?

Finally, how accurate are those grading machines?....serious potential for little tweaks & manipulations which could save factories huge money....

At 5kgs Give them time and they will turn out ok... Most Freisan need time nowadays.

I did the same as you 4 weeks ago. Had 5 of my poorest FRs turning 30 months in early July. 2 of them were definitely only P at the time but 3 I figured might make it into O- so I left them go at 29 months, all 3 graded P+ 🤐 . FS was fine at 3+/4-. The other 2 went this week at +30 months and both graded O- 🤐. In fairness though one of them really squared up nicely in the last week and I thought she would make an O- alright, but the other was still worse that the 3 Ps I sent at 29 months. Can't win with the factories.

Very interesting....at least im not the only one with these headaches...

On a similar note, i also recently had 2 lovely Red LMX under 30 months....twins....

    One was R- 3+ 370kgs, the other was O+ 4- 375kgs!!

The O+ one was the better animal in my opinion but larrys machine said no!!

    T'would break you.....

    Just crunched some numbers there...

    By grading my 300 kg FR a P+ and not an O-....I lost out on €54...(18c x 300kg)... 6c grid + 12c QA bonus

By grading my 375 kg red LMX an O+ and not R-...I lost out on €45....(12c × 375kg)...12c grid....

Thats €100 between 2 cattle...do that to enough cattle and the factories are playing us for fools...

    Well played Larry👏🏻

Maybe numbers are starting to tighten as it seems to be very easy everywhere to get cattle moving,

Any issues/waste in throwing minerals on top of baled silage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,323 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

No worries as my silage is usually very dry. Even on silage that is not too dry it's not an issue. Cattle do not follow it down through the silage like they do with ration. You main issue will be feed face for all cattle in a pen. As cattle can feed back and front of pens I just throw it on the floor at back of pens

The uncle is gone racing for the weekend again so I’m keeping an eye on the cattle. These are the next ones for the factory I guess. He bought them as calves, thinking they were dear AA but realised they were LM when he saw the cards!

Bit flighty but I suppose that the LM is it?

4% of steers going in underfinished this year. That is nearly double the amount last year.

Would that mean the factories are killing similar numbers but getting less meat?

That means in the main farmers are scared of a massive price collapse imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,323 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Ya it would mean carcass weights have dropped significantly due to ration costs and lads grabbing a significant price

The article is nothing to do with weights really. It’s about cattle not having an adequate fat score of 2+ and greater. These cattle would have lost 20cent in a lot of cases unless there was an agreement with the factory beforehand When they were eager for stock.

If cattle have less finish on them they have less weight. The KO is lower as well. If the number of underfinished cattle has doubled it means right up along the line cattle are being slaughtered with less finish on them.

Have March 21 AA Bullocks and heifer currently around the 500kg mark,..plan on feeding them 3kg/head from the 15th of August till the 1st of October and slaughter them in batches as they come fit,..anyone doing similar?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,323 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

If they are that weight I would definitely be doing it. The November bonus is gone. They will fatten better in August/September than October. I would even pick the heaviest and start feeding them now

Cheers Bass, that's along the lines I was think

I have 6 18-20 month LM bulllocks and heifers. Live weight 520-570. All fairly stylish types. Normally sell in the mart September time. Would they finish (and pay) if started feeding them now I wonder. Prob not worth the bother.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,696 ✭✭✭memorystick

I’ve 21 small lads that I’m going to start feeding this week. Don’t want to winter them. About 450-480kgs. There’s one BBx bull in it that I’ll keep on. It’s not a problem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,323 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Those LM can be very hard to get I to FS 3 or even 2+. Having said that at 630-650kgs they would hang 330-350kgs if you got them to FS3 at a base of 4.5 they probably come into 1580-1680 euro.

Your only chance would be to start feeding them now. You would want a real high energy nut/ration. I even be adding maize to it. However I expect that bullocks like that would make 2.5/kg minimums.

You will be pouring ration into them. If you have silage I would overwinter. By the way lads are on there will be a load of you g cattle hung this autumn.

Ration prices are 400+/ton. Unless you have a bin and can put straight mixes in I be looking at the costs.

These cattle will not grade or weight

I would agree with you somewhat but these aren’t good cattle that would grow. Going to replace with better stock. I see your point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,323 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

If they are slow growing cattle you would want to be careful with what you do. No matter how much you feed them they will only do 550-600 grams per day. You would want to look at feeding over 60-80 days 1-2kgs for August and September and go no further than 3.5kgs per day

Lads are mad killing those light cattle even if small framed. Go to the mart with them and don't be wasting your time buying and feeding ration
