I know of cattle killed @480 this week and a waiting list of people saying they were lucky to get them in.

Around here the people killing off summer grass are very different to the shed feeders. They all have alternative source of income/semi retired. They call the same agents every year for soft chat and take whatever he says everyone else is getting.

Yup, no alternative. If I hadn't started feeding what I've left I think I would have left them run on, winter them again and sell them in apr/may at 38/9 months - fu*k the 'premium bonus'. Wouldn't need to replace them with younger stock and I'm betting the price will be 5.50-6 then to appease the feedlots. Not an option now as they on nuts with 4 weeks.

Kill has dropped back looking at factor returns for last week. Kill virtually exactly the same as last year. Supposed to be a sh!tload of cows going to the local places all not finished. P/O cows supposed to be 4.7-4.8/ kg. I do not deal in cows so I do not know.

I have a few booked in for late next week but no price got yet. Locally it's still at 4.9/ kg AFAIK

Apologies I do recognise that there are a few "hard sellers" but the are greatly out numbed and this gives the processors the better hand.

It takes very little to tip the scales.

The only soft money in the beef industry is the agents fees and to a lesser extent haulage. (local plant 9miles now 20 ahead)

There is a reason that they are not squeezed like all the other Labour and contracted out services in the meat industry.

There is no such thing as hard or soft sellers. Unless you operate between. 3-4 processor's and at least one is an independent you get little choice in price.

None of the big three quote against each other to the smaller producer. The present price fall is caused by a decision by processor's to strong arm the last of the cattle being fed in sheds out of them. Along with slaughtering cows from the marts that are straight out of the parlor in general.

I am between two plants that are both own by the big three. Bother are quoting exactly the same. I went to an agent for the third and he quoted 10c more but transport will swallow all that.

But they are paying well for cows straight out of the parlor. A P+grade Friesian bullock is 20c/kg less than a P grade cow and in a mart load it will be most p grade cows

There is definitely soft sellers out there. I was baling hay for a man last week and he had a batch of finishing bullocks in the paddock beside the hay. I asked him had he them booked in anywhere yet and he told me they’re going next week. I asked where or how much and he didn’t know the answer to either question. He just rang his agent, who’s an agent for a few places, and told him they’re fit to go, take them away.

Now the other side of that coin is he’d only be killing small numbers a year. But enough of lads killing small numbers that are like that and it’s enough to keep the factories going for a lull period too.

I would have always considered myself poor at haggling on price but I signed the paperwork today for a 20k loan to build a shed and that debt has me already looking at prices, and farming in general, in a much harder and harsher light!

Your last para. is hard to credit. Why would they do such a thing - pay 20c more for a P grade cow from the parlour than a P grade Fr bullock?

Of course they have to compete in the mart, but would that be enough?

Locally here I am see it the boys that kill a few hundred a year that are killing alot of the cattle at the minute. I am guessing these lads are in at a higher base price than us poor plebs or otherwise they would have been moving them awhile ago.
