Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Please be advised we have had to cancel Lees Road parkrun in Ennis this week

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭py

Anyone know what's happening with the Free Weekly Timed podcast? Seems to be on a summer break but I can't recall them taking a break this long.

I'm sure everyone knows this already, but yesterday I discovered an app called Garmin Connect IQ which allows you to download different watch faces for your Garmin watch (in my case Forerunner 45).

There's one that displays your Parkrun barcode (& emergency contact details).

I haven't tried to scan it yet, hopefully will on Sat., but it seems cool & handy enough.

Works fine on my Garmin. Never had a problem scanning off it.

Garmin watches scan fine for my experience with them.

Did Lees road today, was totally fine with buggy.

Not a Buggy PB course but very doable. Lovely event, and sheltered from weather a fair bit.

Had great fun, only noticed after I could have been getting free charge for me EV too!

Will be in London next weekend and staying in the South Kensington area and looking at my parkrun options. Was thinking of Bushy Park as have never been but not sure how difficult it is to get out there. Anyone with any experiences to share?

It's easy enough. Think we've got the overground train to Teddington from Waterloo previously, then you have a bit of a hike through the park to get to the start. Check the times on the https://tfl.gov.uk/ site though and it will give you a bunch of alternative route options using trains, underground and busses.

Take a look at Google maps and that will give lots of possible methods of transport. Don't forget it starts at 09:00am. I did it recently but was staying in Kingston so was able to walk to the start area. It's a very nice parkrun!

Did Macroom at the weekend, friendly people.

Heading to the Lake District in the Autumn and have my eye on Fell Foot and Keswick.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

Have done Keswick a few times. The course is much improved since it got washed away in one of the storms several years ago and then was temporarily going round a carpark I think. Smooth tarmac cycle path out and back now.

Not done Fell Foot yet but think they have a couple of courses depending on the season.

Winlatter is also an option, if you like hills. Have walked the course looking for Gruffalos on a different day of the week. Lovely forest trails, but big hill.

Has anyone done a parkrun in Wales? I am around Harlech next week. The closest one seems to be Dolgellau. Is that worth doing or is there a nicer one that might justify the extra travel time? I would be happy to spend half a day wherever it is.

All the Welsh ones I've done are down south along the M4, or actually on the M49.

Ended up doing Penrhyn parkrun. Beautiful castle there and overlooks the coast so from a tourist perspective it ticks all the boxes. The run itself was pretty much a 4 lap course so lots of lapping etc. Also very hilly.

    And the heat..................

Did Portumna on Saturday, beautiful parkrun and nice volunteers

I did make the trek out to Bushy a few weeks back in London and was glad to have made the journey. I finished in 356th place out of 1384 runners. A friend said that to me that the start is like the grand national and very much the case. For anyone looking to make the journey, what worked well for us was the district line out as far as Wimbledon and then changed over to the overground to Hampton Court and it's about a 10 minute walk to the start area from there. Had a nice breakfast in a cafe the village of Hampton Court afterwards.

Which Limerick parkrun is the nicest? Mungret or UL? Or would it be worthwhile going the extra distance to Illaunmanagh in Clare instead?

Mungret isn't particularly great. It's three or four laps of a smallish park with a big hill in one corner. You can see the whole course from everywhere on the course so can be a little boring. Easy to get to though. I never did UL or the one in Clare I'm afraid.

Of the two Limerick ones Mungret has a really nice cafe close to the finish line for a tasty post parkrun treat if that makes any difference. As already mentioned you have a sharp enough hill to be negotiated 3 or 4 times along with the corresponding sharp downhill all on smooth tarmac paths.

UL is a three looper with one section along by the river. It has a mix of gravel and concrete paths. There isn't really that much to separate either parkrun really imo. I haven't been to Illaunmanagh.

Had the pleasure of saying hello to the male and female world record holders, for the highest number of parkrun locations ran this morning. The female runner was doing her 450th different location in Donabate this morning, the bloke was finishing his 517th different location, another one of their group was doing his 600th run, and I ran with a lady who was doing her 80th different location.

They try and head off every weekend, they flew in from the UK this morning and were heading back this afternoon. Check out this morning's results, to see all of their different locations, even more remarkable, is that the male record holder has done nearly 200 volunteer runs, on top of over 600 runs.

I like a bit of parkrun tourism myself, but 517 different locations, I didn't even know there were that many.

That sounds like something that could get very expensive over time but is the kind of obsession I could easily buy into🤣🤣

I'd never give out about a parkrun, but none of those three would be my favourites at all. The best is probably Illaunmanagh. Newcastlewest which is also in Limerick is similar.

No Marley parkrun next week due to a dog event in the park.

New parkrun started in Fethard on Sat, three laps of what looks like a very new park as lots of building work still going on. Wishing them lots of success for the future.

I ended up getting a pb today and my first ever sub 23 min 5k which was a bit of a surprise as I started well back in the field and was intending to take it handy. 😃😃😃😃

Delighted with myself. My last pb was mid 2019

Portumna is celebrating its 150th event this weekend if anyone is in the South Galway/Upper Lough Derg area.

I did Wormwood Scrubs parkrun in London last Saturday, a smaller parkrun (avg. 61 runners per week, 100 there last week) but very enjoyable run and a very friendly bunch. It's just about a kilometre from East Acton tube stop on the central line so very convenient to get to. The whole course is on grass which is something I've only come across in parkrun a few times, there is nice pull in the course as well that you get to do twice over 2.5 laps so not a fast course but a good run. You can have a look (at the outside) of the nearby famous prison of the same name adjacent to the Wormwood Scrubs park.

New Parkrun starting in Dodder valley park in Firhouse/Tallaght on November 5th, just saw South Dublin CC advertise it

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭py

Excellent. I run there regularly as it is. Wonder if Pearse Bros AC are getting involved with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 732 ✭✭✭Duzzie

Not on the parkrun site. Probably trying to keep it quiet to prevent being over run by inaugural hunters. There is another starting the same day, which is on the parkrun site but is more remote so tourists less likely to be an issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭gar

    Where's the other one?

My guess is Brothers Pearse but not sure, the park has had quite the revamp of late

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 vincenp

Dodder Valley Parkrun is organised by SDCC in conjunction with somebody from the HSE. Brothers Pearse are not involved at all. We only found out about it , about 6 weeks ago. The course is very tough and the last mile is a gradual uphill all the way to the finish and generally into the wind. Good surface throughout the course.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭py

I'm guessing it starts up by the new Basketball/tennis courts so. Does it go up over the "mound" across from Speaker Connolly? 😃 How far along the Dodder does it go?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 vincenp

Not over but around it. Sharp left after the bridge near it, along the Dodder path till you reach the end of the hill and then a very very sharp right back up past public car park and all the way back to Ahearnes. Will be a bit of contra flow for about 3/400 metres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,249 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Excellent. I'm in Ballinasloe but I make the trip to Portumna because although Athlone is closer (and still will be) the Portumna route is more weather robust. Mountbellew is very doable.

Did no one tell them about the all lower case rule?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭gar

It's mad that there at 5 parkruns within 30 mins drive of Roscommon town but it doesn't have one. Especially as it's got quite a good running club. Couple of laps of the castle park would do it I think
