The referee on Saturday also overruled his linesman who was standing about 2 feet from an incident where he gave a line-ball, to Waterford , the referee however belatedly decided for some reason that there was a push in the back by the Waterford Player, which based on replays, he was the only one that saw a push, and the Cork free was converted - small margins in games of this nature.

Back to the Senior Hurlers - When Cody was appointed as Kilkenny manager, his aim, (outside of winning All Irelands) was to change the mentally and mindset of the Kilkenny team, and to build a structure that would compete year on year with the best . He set out by demanding and instilling an ethos of hard work, aggressive approach and never say die attitude - the jersey came first and if you were not of this mindset you did not last long. He then added Hurling skills to the mix and be built a mentality and belief in KK hurling that has endured throughout his tenure., and the foundation is there for the next manager to continue.

Over his years, he has endured much criticism in KK, (the vast majority of which was unfounded) but in Ned Quinn he had a man of equal vision and who (from what I know) supported him all the way. John Kiely, is of a similar character, and has now set out on this road in Limerick ably supported by Joe McKenna (and of course JP)

My fear of we making a short term appointment of a name (such as Eddie Brennan) is that his aim will solely be to try and win an All Ireland within the next two years - no disrespect to him or any other candidates, they have very little interest in promoting the long-term future of Waterford Hurling. You may say what is wrong with that, my problem is that it is betting the house on a success in that time period, because this will most certainly mean pandering to the "egos" of our current panel, rather than setting down a serious marker for the years ahead, and for what is expected when you pull on a Waterford Jersey. The skill levels of top inter-county hurlers is unreal, and outside the very top few players, there is not a huge difference between top counties - the main difference is in attitude and organisation. The questions i pose now are :

    • are we as a county ready to take that leap and start now to improve for the future of all our teams, rather than such a short term gamble?
    • are our county board ready to really commit to this and genuinely support this effort, and are we ready put the proper people and resources in place to drive it on/

The alternative is that we gamble on winning an All Ireland within 24 months, and if we fail, continue to stumble from one bunch of highly talented hurlers to the next, without ever building a proper ethos around wearing the county jersey and what it means.

I’ve no doubt he would but he made an absolute bollox of the u21s despite a star studded group of players so camogie can keep him

Personally, I thought the ref got that one right. Ultimately, Cork looked more composed and finished strongly. Waterford's ball handling and decision making went to pot near the end but they're a young side and were coming in after only a short break following their defeat of Limerick.

when did he mange the u21’s and what stars did he have….?

was it the year after we win it..?

He almost got the minors to a 2nd All Ireland Final in a row in 2014 (Kilkenny beat us in ET)

Then took over the under 21s in 2015 with Tony Browne and John Mullane in the management team. Almost similar squad to the 2016 squad (possibly stronger on paper), we beat Cork handy in the QF but lost out to a weak enough Clare team in the semis

We had a better u21 team in 2015 than we did when we won it in 16. It was the minors from 13 and 14 plus the likes of de Burca Tom Devine Colin dunford Kieran Bennett mcnulty yet Lyons managed to make a mess of it we were soundly beaten by a Clare team that had no pedigree at all. Just another substandard management of our underage teams which was still evident this year

I am still livid at the way Waterford lost that Under 21 game against Clare. They definitely had a stronger team than the one which won the All-Ireland the following year (see the team below). They blew Cork away in the first round in Páirc Uí Rinn but, despite having a much stronger team than Clare and a powerful forward line, they set up defensively from the start, with Tadhg de Búrca as sweeper and, unbelievably, retained that formation to the end, even when defeat was staring them in the face. With two minutes to go, and Waterford two points down, de Búrca played a long ball out of defence and there was just one Waterford player within 40 metres of the Clare goal. This negative approach clearly impacted on the players, who made an extraordinary number of errors during the game. Apart from the defensive setup, the Waterford team was badly selected, and the changes made during the game had the effect of making things even worse. Clare were beaten in the Munster Final by Limerick, who went on to win the All-Ireland. It is because of Tony Browne's involvement in the management of this team that I have severe doubts about him being anywhere near the management of the senior team.

    WATERFORD: J Henley; C Gleeson, K Bennett, S McNulty; M Harney, T De Burca, T Devine; C Dunford (0-1), R Donnelly; Shane Bennett (0-2, one 65), A Gleeson (0-5, one free, one 65), Stephen Bennett; M Kearney (0-1), DJ Foran (0-1), P Curran (1-7, 0-5 frees)

Subs: D Lyons for Harney (h-t), C Curran (0-1) for Donnelly (40 mins), S Keating for Foran (46 mins).

I was on holidays in the Canaries watching that U21 match . I still blush when I think of the build up I gave to that team to anyone prepared to listen within shouting distance of the TV. Then the match happened. I contemplated swimming home rather than face the neighbors again.

On Saturday I thought the camogie team were really unlucky not to get over the line. Another couple of points at crucial stages or a deserved goal would have done it. I’m not sure the issue is conditioning though. There didn’t seem to be any options on the bench. Abbie Flynn is a fine player but was clearly hampered by injury but she couldn’t be replaced. By contrast Cork brought on good subs in numbers and our girls were just gassed, particularly after playing a tough game the previous week.

I hope I’m wrong but it was like watching the men from 20 years ago, some seriously talented hurlers in Carton, Rockett, Flynn and Bray with a solid defense but we can’t afford injuries or make game changing substitutions. Hopefully they will add a few more and after Saturday, they should have great confidence in themselves.

The last day for the Expression of interest is today. Surely the rumor mill will be in full flow from here on in

Thought that for consideration to be in the selection committee

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,922 ✭✭✭914

I would have read it as the panel is formed and expressions of interest for the manager need to be in by today

"The Waterford county board have started their search for a new senior hurling manager by appointing a four man selection committee.

Chairman Sean Michael O'Regan, county secretary Pat Flynn, CEO of Nemeton TV Irial Mac Murchú and former Waterford captain Fergal Hartley will sit on the panel. Expressions of interest are currently being sought for the position. The closing date is Monday, July 25."

Who is Irial Mac Murchu, CEO of Nemeton TV and what are his credentials to be on the panel? Not questioning the man, I’m just curious to know who he is and what experience/skill set he has to be on the panel appointing the new manager as I’ve never heard of him.

Are Nemeton the crowd that own TG4? I’m fairly sure MacDara MacDoncha or someone from Nemeton TV was also on the panel last time that appointed Cahill?

Tipp knew what was coming down the line..we didnt..obviously Colm Bonner didn't either !!

I had similar thoughts initially but the role of Waterford manager is the primary face of Waterford GAA. So from the aspect of media communication to supporters, sponsors and players he would have some expertise. He also would have experience on running a complex team across multiple locations. Should this expertise account for 25% of the committee is the real question.

Any speculation on who is after applying for the Waterford job and when it will be decided who's after getting it ??

From the news and star today

Informed sources say that high profile names under consideration include such as Eddie Brennan and Michael Fennelly of Kilkenny, Davy Fitzgerald, Derek McGrath and Stephen Molumphy with at least two of those mentioned having been already interviewed. It would not be surprising if an announcement is forthcoming prior to the completion of the first round of senior championship games this coming weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,528 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

    Interesting list

Bit suspect of Eddie Brennan though esp with what happend in Laois with his mouthing off. We all know if things go wrong with our players what happens

Molumphy the best long term option

Just announced that Fennelly is gone from Offaly

Always got the impression Eddie Brennan hates (too strong a word maybe) Waterford.

    Michael Fennelly finished with Offaly.

It's an interesting media battle at the moment. The Offaly board say they are not renewing his contract. Whereas other outlets are saying Fennelly left...

Feels like he wanted to stay. He said on OTB:

"There could be a case of appetite for a new manager maybe or a case for myself (to stay).

"I'll know more later this week."

Will O'Callaghan says Fennelly wanted to stay on but Offaly wanted someone else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭decies

Derek McGrath, Michael Fennelly as joint managers is the rumour

What's the format for the senior hurling club championship this year.

    4 groups of 3

I presume bottom team in each group in relegation battle.

What's the format for the knockouts?

    Thanks

Top 2 each group into the QFs

Bottom 4 playoff (2x semis with the losers in the playoff). Team relagated to the Premier Intermediate 2023

Think that may of been a piss take but tbh might not be the worst
