Great mens 10k there. Quite surprised Barega missed the podium, I had him as champion 😬 Would've liked Aregawi to have made it too but he just didn't have it in the home straight. Harsh for Fisher getting 4th too. And Mburu the silver medallist? Never even heard of him 😬😬

FWIW I think the stadium is stunning. Size is fine too as no one would complain about Oslo and that’s similar size

I think the issue is that it’s so soon after the Olympics and way earlier than usual. It’s usually mid or late August and that month extra is big for building up. This has sort of crept up for me

Awful times for watching haven’t helped either.

I'm quite liking Jess Ennis on commentary

Radcliffe is a dose can't take her with her dubious history

Looks like Adeleke is not competing in the 200m. I thought she was initially down for that event.

Noteworthy how little comment there is on the world athletics here....maybe cause its not on the telly, but compared to the threads on GAA/ TDF/ Golf/ Rugby it really is very quiet.

It not being on RTE is definitely a factor. The timing was not really ideal for the national broadcaster - they were already committed to showing all the women's Euro games live and their coverage doesn't wrap up until 10.30pm every evening.

Would like to have seen how the 4*400 mixed relay would have gone if Adeleke had run. Disappointing to see both Barr & Coscoran both make their exit.

I'd love to be watching more coverage but time difference is definitely a factor.

World champs haven’t been on RTE in decades to be fair. This isn’t a new thing and they can’t blame any clashes

Oh right, I guess the TV rights and costs are an issue? I'm assuming the Euros come under the European Broadcasting Union but that the Worlds may be a lot more expensive to show.

Only trying to catch up with a few highlights and the odd live bits and pieces really. The timing of the events a the biggest issue for me. Really enjoyed both the 10000m races though. I hope I can catch up with a few more races before the championship ends.

Couldn't watch through the night so had to play catchup today. Poor Devon Allen, the false start rules seem very unfair. Surely there's got to be another way?!

I really felt for Devon Allen. I’ve always liked him as an athlete and would’ve have liked to see him win an international medal before he departed for the NFL. Sadly it wasn’t to be. In the end it was an anticlimactic final, with two big names out. Crazy to think that Spain has an a hurdle medalist at Worlds level.

While I was happy to see two Irish athletes make the 400 semi's, I thought the overall standard was dissapointing. Athletes who did not break 46 (Men) or 52 (Women) are now semi finalists, not a great reflection of worlds standards. I thought the scheduling was poor, surely they could have been given a day off between the mixed relays and heats. Good to see the Borlees still flying the flag for Belgium and making the semis.

Thought it was a very exciting Mens 10k. The crowd seemed really into it. The Mens 100 was a bit of a let down, times were disappointing.m only half the field were sub 19. Nice to see Jamaicia sweep the Women’s 100, SFP really delivers at Worlds.

The timing is a real pain.

Doesn't make sense for the rte to show it. Its on at a terrible time for audience here, small interest compare to other sport you mentioned and its streamed and free to watch at anytime on youtube.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,449 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I suspect cost is a factor too. If they haven't shown it live for years, it's probably because the TV rights are on the expensive side and it's not worth the effort.

it’s all relative isn’t it? Saw a tweet early this week that 18 European countries hadn’t bought the rights this year

Was something like 6/7 last time out

Finally caught up. Men's steeple was a dud until the final 600m, but delighted El Bakkali took the gold. Lamecha Girma forever the bridesmaid, his fourth consecutive silver at a major championship!

The women's 1500m though, holy sh*t! Kipyegon was always gonna be unbeatable but Tsegay gave it a good go nonetheless. Thrilled for Muir to finally get a world medal, such a gritty performance. Thought she might be able to run down Tsegay, but a brilliant bronze all the same!

I've watched most of the coverage so far. The best way i find is to go straight to the world athletics YouTube channel and select the most recent live stream. It's better than watching it live if you tune in a couple of hours behind because you can skip through some of the pomp and field events which I'm not as interested in. Really enjoyed them so far.

Favour Ofili could surprise a few in the 200. She's bet Steiner a couple of times this year too. I think Jackson might win it myself.

Josh Kerr has looked very impressive so far in the 1500 heats managing to pull a few faces at his competitors on the way to coming first in each heat. Surprising after not taking an automatic spot at the British Championships but I'd love to see him improve on his Olympic bronze.

I'll be up early in the morning (a few hours after the races) to skip forward to that and the 400 hurdles finals.

Ah, but skip those field events and you would have missed a very compelling men's high jump and women's triple.

What a run by Whiteman. He showed no respect to Jakob once he went for it. Brilliant finish. Katir then peaking out of nowhere although he looked like he'd refound a little form in the semi. That's a clean sweep of medals for Europe in the 1,500. When was the last time that happened? Love to see a results page like that splashed with SBs and PBs.

The hurdles was not quite the contest that I'd hoped for. Still a decent race.

I just loved that result from Wightman, was really surprised Jakob had no answer when Wightman went for it. It must have been so special (not to mention nerve wracking) for his dad/coach commentating. Delighted to see Laura Muir get the bronze in the 1500 too, Brits seem to be doing well though i have no idea of total medal tallies? The Americans in the Women's marathon was pretty special, the footage of them working together and waiting for each other at the finish line, Sarah Hall seems to be getting stronger despite nearing 40.

Whatever about saying he's embarrassed I think his own assessment is spot on here of how it went -

It looked like he was running outside for a while before eventually taking the front. Then he got challenged to hold that front position. It all ran his energy down. Too much faith in himself and perhaps a lack of faith in his competitors played into some poor choices during the race. He didn't expect to be challenged as much. You can't race a world final and not expect that.

    Wightman's dad Geoff 😀

How come Adeleke didn't compete in the 100 or 200 meters?

She's landed an interesting lane draw in the 400m, inside Miller-Uibo. Probably too much to ask to make the final as she'll have to break her PB by 3-4 tenths tho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,717 ✭✭✭YFlyer

I think she was initially down for the 200m. Probably was asking much for her to compete in 400, 200 and relays as well. She would had a busy NCAA indoor and outdoor season as well.

Finally caught up on the day's action. Jake Wightman... wow! As good as he is, I didn't have him anywhere on the podium. Just the perfect run at the perfect time. When he attacked with 200m to go I was sure he'd get run down by someone. I knew Ingebrigtsen was in trouble at the bell but didn't think it was Wightman that'd be beating him. What a race, and what a shock!

Quite surprised with Warholm too, even if in reality I probably shouldn't have been. Despite his injury a few weeks back, I genuinely thought he had run himself into form and would be back on top here. Delighted for Dos Santos though, it's been coming. Benjamin the bridesmaid yet again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,449 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I think it's that her coach thinks she is too young at 19 and doesn't want to overstretch her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,537 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

She might have ran the 200 if she didn’t get out of the 400 heats but they all overlap so best to take it easy. Hopefully a long career ahead of her

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,306 ✭✭✭waynescales1

I wonder what her "main" event will end up being when she does mature as an athlete. Have they already decided it's gonna be the 400? Or did they choose 400m for this Worlds because they felt that was her best chance of making a final I wonder.

I would imagine that played a role in the decision. The women’s 100m and 200m are incredibly stacked events this year. Just look at the line- up in the 200m final, three Jamaicans (SAFP, SJ, ETH), Dina Asher Smith, Abby Steiner, Senyi, Kambundji, etc. Adeleke hadn’t a hope in hell of making the final. Jenna Prandini missed out, despite running 22.08 in the semi finals!

By contrast, the 400m is relatively weak this year. SMU and Paulino will win gold and silver. However, bronze is up for grabs, so much so that even one of three Europeans could steal it, Kaczmarek, Kielbasinska, or Klaver. Incidentally, I’ve been very impressed with Klaver’s improvement this year. Wouldn’t be surprised to see her dip below 50 seconds in the semi tonight.

Great run from Mark English - through to semifinals with 3rd in 1.44.76.
