If they do they do, fair play because they obviously put in the effort required and deserve the credit where credit is due.

But I can absolutely assure you that ain't going to happen in 99% of the cases.

These people come from shitholes and will turn our town into an even bigger shithole within a couple months.

I was thinking myself, not everyone could stay long term in a place like that, the country is such a mess I would jokingly say I'd be happy on a little island far from the madness and with rubbish Internet to even follow it but I have too much Dublin in me, living in the sticks for a few years has been an adjustment as it is 😂 but yes despite boats back and forth its not a life for everyone and I would guess they are genuine or they probably would have left, a few near to us left long ago because this place was too isolated.

I feel so sad for the genuine cases, nothing that hasn't been said in here before but the majority are here for the free money, and it's a worrying time, only my daughter did TY she would be starting this college this year, she has known since she was little she wanted to be a nurse and works so hard at school to follow her career path so I'm hoping to god next year she will get a place and will have accommodation but I'm sure it will only get worse by that stage. On top of that renting from a cowboy landlord with nowhere else to move to things are not easy, we are nowhere near as bad as other people struggling but still

When the only argument is feelz and guilt-tripping, and when it fails to be validated or is completely dismantled, resort to personal jibes.

The students will be looking for their student accommodation back that's currently housing a lot of Ukrainians.

    How's that going to work?!

See, that's not the point either is it?

These are supposedly refugees fleeing war. Their only hope should be a safe location, a roof over their heads, access to essential medical care, and food until it's safe to go home again.

Coming here to "do better" isn't really fleeing war is it? It's economic migration. Doesn't exactly fit the narrative though!

Ssssh.. don't be calling out one of the many logical fallacies of this scheme - just embrace the fuzzies.... or something!

Let's be honest here, Ukraine is a massive massive country and vast areas of it are untouched by war. The Russian army is an absolute laughing stock and have no chance of even holding the ground they've already taken never mind capturing more.

It's time to shut the gates and send people back. We need our hotels for tourists and internal holidays and our own people are desperate for a roof over their head due to the criminal carry on from decades of FFG governance.

    Enough is enough.

I have a feeling they won't be turfing the Ukrainians out for students coming back.

The taxpayers and citizens get charged.

rte losing advertising revenue… the money for the running of RTE has to come from somewhere, either advertising revenue or the public.

so our cards are being swiped multiple times to pay for all this, only thing is there is no requirement to enter a pin..

They might have to bring beck the online college like during lockdown. The Ukrainians will not be kicked out of those houses.

there is no doubt that these attacks and atrocities are appalling and sickening. I can't watch them on the News, I usually pause them then fast forward as its very upsetting. There was another attack today on an area not in the war zone with many fatalities.

However this is a war. Whether Ireland takes in more people or not, there are going to be hundreds more fatalities in Ukraine. These people were not killed because Ireland is at capacity. They would have had the chance to escape by now but I am sure there are many Ukrainians who just want to stay in their own country even though its risky. This is a huge and complex war, all of Europe is helping and bursting at the seams. Ireland has taken far more per capita than almost any other country.

There are millions of children starving to death in Yemen right now. Are we to take those millions in here too? We are also taking in thousands from sub saharan Africa, Ethiopa, Somalia, Rwanda and God know where else. There is a limit to what any country can do..... war is part of the unfairness of life, its also geographical and so are famine and droughts. We cannot save everyone in the world. We have done so much already but now our own citizens are being discriminated against. Its to be expected that there is anger and frustration! No matter what anyone says all you want to do is throw it back at them, you never see one positive in what Ireland has done. How many refugees are you hosting?

Where will the students be accommodated? People are paying money to send their children to collage. They will be paying for accommodation also, refugees can’t be taking their accommodation and collage places.

Yes, I think that is definitely going to be the case, unfortunately.

It's an absolute mess and nobody in government seems to be acknowledging it, still less acting on it by at the very least, pausing the numbers coming in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭EOQRTL

Sick to death of the likes of RTE doing the governments bidding also be it Ukraine/Covid whatever. You can be absolutely sure they'd change their tune if the government told them the money that comes out of the public purse to pay the likes of clowns like Duffy and Tubs is being stopped and diverted towards housing refugees. Only fair given the emergency we all face right RTE?

Simon Harris wanted them to access free third level education… not sure if that panned out in their favour or ours so if he’s all for giving them places on courses worth up to 30,000 a year he’ll have no problem with them taking student accommodation as some of our own young people won’t have access to the courses anyway where they would previously..

To be fair Maggie I think most people in Ireland would buy ya a pint or shake your hand for helping the people in need.

We're mostly very generous and decent caring people. Why were respected all around the world.

But what most people are complaining about here is the question of, Now what happens? what next? what about x y and z? Etc etc

We're solving one other countries problem but creating several massive ones of our own and in the end it isn't going to help anybody.

All very fair and genuine concerns I believe.

This is like what happened in America, history repeating itself.

Jesus the level of xenophobia displayed in this thread is astounding. There was a newly arrived Ukrainian lad interviewed on Newstalk earlier whose sole hope was 'securing a steady job'. I would gladly swap him for a couple of long term unemployed Irish people i know. I have a single criteria on which i judge people, do they contribute to society or not. I don't care where they were born or what colour they are or how they got here.

Anyone who espouses ' look after our own' is just a bigot, a them and we opinion, broadstroke bs which should be called out for what it is.

I know that students want their places back and college and accommodation booked and paid for as well. But not a hope they will be turfing Ukrainians out come September. What happens to them then? Hand them a free tent? There's no way our Irish government will make themselves look that bad to the EU. But they will 100% do it to our own and that means students getting the short end of the stick.

Very mature contribution from somebody of your vintage.

Is it any wonder this entire situation is an utter farce with people of this caliber involved..

So you're on the dole then and couldn't care what it costs our citizens? Makes sense.

Ignoring idiots who comment "far right" because they don't even know what it means

Care to outline the merits of the post beyond screeching xenophobia? What solutions does it offer for dealing with an precedented influx of people into a nation struggling to cope?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,197 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Utter nonsense, spend some time actually reading posts.

As for this "Young Lad" what's he doing here did you wonder , how can you determine this "Young Lad" is employable, trustworthy based on a Vox Pop , is this "Young Lad Alone" , how did magically end up here , is he perhaps thinking ahead of obtaining a free university place and substantial grant. Your comments about the unemployed said it all for me.

Sounds to me like you were listening to fantasy fluff FM

I've two words but I'm far to polite to use .

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

It's not xenophobia if it's causing problems for us. If a student misses out on college come September because they can't get accommodation, how will that help them in the long run?

So you dont want your fellow citizens to look after each other?

I detest people like you who think you are morally superior to others who simply have different viewpoints.

    You aren't a 'better person".

You can spend your own money helping the whole world, dont ask us to pay for every problem out there. We cant and we wont.
