Cost of living means nothing, they aren't paying for anything, absolutely nothing and begging for everything online for free and still getting their bank account topped up every week.

When they go home (if) they go home ( the ones that don't get a free gaff) will probably be able to buy a gaff back home.

    Sorry couldn't link....

If anyone has a bit of free time on their hands there are many eye opening comments below the above post. Mainly Russians and Ukrainians talking about the problems facing them and Ireland.

Well all of this is just inaccurate....

First of all, their country isn't being "blown to bits". There is a limited conflict in a relatively small part of what is a massive country and the Ukrainians are by all accounts holding their own against the Russians - good for them!

Secondly, the notion of these "poor refugees" browsing what Europe has to offer them before they pick the lucky winner seems at odds with the above narrative of them fleeing imminent death. If that were the case then they'd be taking the first place to offer them refuge - ideally close to home so as to be close to any family/friends that may still be behind. That's not including the MASSIVE land area within their own borders that is not affected by the fighting.

So which is it? Genuine refugees who yet somehow feel entitled to pick n choose where they end up depending on what freebies they'll be offered - or just call it as it is... welfare tourists and economic migrants chancing their arm?

What are you on about? Have you not followed the news at all the last few months? There is a war on in Ukraine.

What would you do big man if you were 10 miles from the frontline? Tell your missus and kids to stay there because "sure our house hasn't even been hit by one shell yet" or would you want them to get to safety?

Such bitterness and begrudgery. Don't forget that at the start of this, the Russians were expected to have the country overran in a few days.

Except the entire country isn't at war is it? There's a section in the east/south-east alright but there's also a massive expanse of territory to the west not affected at all.

I'll use my NI analogy again.. it would be akin to fleeing Kerry to go to Poland (or Ukraine!) because of trouble in Belfast.

There's war and then there's not much happening in the circled area. I'll give you the odd thing here or there, like what happens in countries all over the world everyday but not actual war

What the hell is going on with this country.

We're being governed by weak virtue-signalling politicians chasing kudos and jobs in the EU and being cheered on by turkeys who are voting for Christmas

Of course, this doesn't include the increasing majority who are getting increasingly concerned and resentful of coming last in their own country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,325 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

Ah, so lads that can predict the future here. Why didn't you get onto the EU last February and explain to them, when the Russians were 30 miles from Kyiv and it was getting bombarded with missiles, that there was no need for the women and children to evacuate.

I think you might be reading too much Russian "news" if you think that the situation in Ukraine is "odd thing here or there .... but not actual war". A special military operation perchance comrade?

Given that the Ukraine is now on a path to EU membership, and given there is no war on there, why don't you both invest in some property over there? Whenever an accession country joins, property values shoot up anyway, but I'd say you'd pick up some additional bargains at the minute. Club together and buy an apartment block or shopping centre in a big town or city sure.

Nobody knows, but there is a lot of resentment building.

Even bloody Reddit Ireland is getting ticked off about it, and they were the most gung-ho of any of the Irish discussion sites about the whole thing in the beginning.

Your nonsense is wasted on me I'm afraid.

The bottom line here is that we have more than done our part here and we've now run out of resources and room at the inn. This at a time when the long-standing issues we face in housing, health, costs of living etc have dramatically worsened - and it's not even autumn yet!

I feel no remorse in saying that I'm far more concerned about our own country and its citizens, than increasing numbers of people who are trekking across an entre continent and bypassing every safe harbour on the way to come here in search of free stuff.

We have taken our share. We can't even handle that as it's turned out.

Lads with the paw constantly out feel threatened that someone else might come along with actual need and push them back a bit down the queue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 29,731 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

More nonsense. The ones concerned here are those who are paying for all this and who are watching these "poor victims" asking about where they can get their free stuff and get their teeth done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,197 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Please can we stop with this nonsense about were Military action is concentrated. Yes there is occasional missile strikes into central Ukraine and tragic loss of life but the fact remains no more than 20% of Ukraine is now an active war zone and the harsh reality is vast sways of Ukraine never so much as had a fire work go off , this is not fake news, it's fact.

This is not or was never a full scale war un like the gulf of Baltic wars. There is I believe no logical reason why an enormous number of Ukranians could not now return home or at least return to western Ukraine.

No it's hard working people watching people get free homes, free money, free healthcare, free travel, free education, skipping cues by people who never contributed a cent to the state.

HARD WORKING people on lists for years, children in their 30's still living at home, kids who can't get student accommodation, some of these kids on serious money not being able to buy or even afford rent, getting cancer and getting your medical card taken off you.

All the things people pay tax for about 50 years while working and getting nothing while people rocking up and having disposable income than most to flute around with.

    Joke.

According to Ukrainian news, out of 6.7 million that left the country, 3 million have already returned back to Ukraine (TSN news of 12/07/2022)

Border crossing numbers are down to pre war levels.

The above is sending very mixed messages but looks like people choose war torn Ukraine over some European countries (shame we don't have the stats which countries they were in and decided to leave but I am guessing it's mainly Poland, Romania, Moldova,Spain etc).

But I agree with you - there is a war. The West of the country is more or less safe at the moment, East is in bits, and while a rocket can hit anything and anywhere, life in most parts of Ukraine goes on as normal - bars and restaurants are full, weddings, birthdays, even holidays abroad for those who can afford them, etc.

Ireland has a list of issues many other EU countries don't have. Can it really afford splashing the cash around like this with so many unknowns around the corner? Reducing payments to approx 300-400 pm like what you'd get in Germany or Sweden will quickly sift out economic refugees from the real ones. The money saved if we really have nothing else to spend it on can then be put into action to help those that chose to stay to help them to integrate, learn the language, get jobs.

The government aren’t going to get pro active. Leo and Helen are going to continue with virtue signalling

I think Helen will be privately alarmed at the influx into her constituency, It will be a repeat of her sudden and belated interest in the Navan Hospital situation, not that she gives a Toss but she was getting it in the neck from constituents, the exact same thing will happen when the realisation sets in that Meath will become the new Calais Jungle

Watching the news about Ukrainians and lack of accommodation available for them. Why are they letting them in and with no cap on arrivals. We haven't even hit September yet and students will be looking for places to rent as well.

I don't think that we can legally apply a cap. But the word will get out that new ones coming will be in a tent for the foreseeable future if that makes you feel any better.

    Absolute scutter

If England invaded us from the North would Ukraine be doing the same for us? Would they fuchh

    The whole thing absolutely stinks

I seen heaps of new faces around my local town and none of them are going to help improve the place or better themselves. We're being invaded lad, we just don't no it.

Michael and Leo would be hanging from a nose 200 years ago for there betrayal

Are you worried that maybe these newcomers will show you up by doing better than you after being only here a few months?

Or just maybe, the poster is concerned about unfettered influx of people into a country with enormous debt levels, a crumbling health service, and a squeezed educational system.

Why do you feel the need to get personal? I can assure you that I’m doing very well in life and I’m deeply concerned about the magnitude of this influx. Does that make me a loser too?
