City sold Ferran Torres last winter, then Gabriel Jesus and now Sterling this window. In a loaded season in terms of games and having 5 subs I am surprised at that level of departures with just one attacker added (even if it is Haaland).

Maybe they will buy another attacker/wide player yet.

Signed Alvarez in Jan who will come in The summer too. Its a risky strategy, word inside the club is Cole Palmer will be promoted to a more prominent role. If they dont sign another attacker it means James McAtee will play a decent role too, risky strategy relying on so many unproven players. It might be ok though of Haaland hits the ground running.

Foden can do a job , and deBruyne - always fealt Sterling was over-hyped by English media, they treated him badly when he started, and they tried to right the wrong by exagerating his contribution.

The glazers have made plenty of money available for players, it's how it been used is the problem. They don't have any interest in winning just taking out a dividend, they only act on managers when CL football is gone because it effects revenue. It's in stark contrast to FSG at Liverpool who don't take a penny, are patient with managers, the club stands on its own two feet but have provided interest free loans for infrastructure.

I get the issues with the glazers but United have spent the biggest fees, paid the biggest wages, bought the highest profile players under them.

I didn't realise Alvarez would be part of the squad so it makes more sense to me now.

They might be looking to switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation with Rodri and KDB in the 2, Grealish, Silva and Foden in the 3 and Haaland up top.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,758 Mod ✭✭✭✭DM_7

A more prominent role for Grealish also completely skipped my mind and that the sales are probably a follow on from buying him last summer.

And still have Mahrez & Alvarez waiting in the wings. Even Philips or Gundogan can be in the 2 with KDB pushing up into a more attacking role. So there is still options with who plays behind Haaland.

It's interesting that each of the top 5 sides have all agreed deals for new attackers this season with 4 of those opting for central strikers - Haaland, Nunez, Richarlison & Jesus. Sterling being the wider player for Chelsea who let their main central player leave the club. I don't see him starting up front for Chelsea as the central player. Sterling has always struck me as a 'second in command' type attacker who is a good foil. Like Chelsea, Man United are linker with a wide attacker while their main central attacker is being linked with a move away from the club.

Last summer saw a lot of the same clubs spend either the 1st or 2nd largest transfer fee on a player in their defence.

Crazy stuff from City to let go of Sterling in order to keep an inferior player like Grealish. Guess they’re tied to him to a certain extent because of the stupidity of paying 100m quid for him, but from a football perspective they’re losing a better player by the looks of things. I don’t think Grealish will ever reach the standard that Man City require.

New players at new clubs take time. New players, especially attackers, at Guardiola's Man City take a lot of time to get up to scratch with the game. If people wrote off Bernardo Silva as quickly as they've written off Grealish maybe we'd never have seen the little maestro dominate in the way he has here in England. I also think people may be overblowing just how bad Grealish's season actually was, certainly it was not the season of a £100 million pound player but a little dig into the stats will show you there's something there, and towards the end of the season he was really starting to find his feet. I think you write him off at your peril.

Wolves club record signingFabio Silva (£35m) looks set to join Anderlecht on a season long loan.

Barca owe de Jong £17m in deferred wages

I doubt he is going to leave till he gets pay that.

Would Man U pay that ontop of his transfer fee and then continue to pay him his reported £350k a week wages.

I’ve heard that before. I’m saying he’ll never be Man City standard and there’s zero peril involved. Sterling is and was a far better player. Crazy stuff but they’ve made their bed etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,211 ✭✭✭LineOfBeauty

Guess we'll see next season and the season after that ect. He'll certainly get his chance next season with Jesus and Sterling gone. Let's see how it goes, but I know which way I'd be putting my money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,882 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

He got loads of chances last season, especially at the start of the season. As time went on he increasingly became a benchwarmer.

He is not the type to be putting your money on at all in my opinion.

Yes we will see. My prediction is he will continue to flit in and out of the team but will never be up to requirements.

He did get lots of chances. He didn't always live up to the expectations. Though a dig into the stats will show he wasn't as bad as some would believe. I also think towards the end of the season you could see the way he's being asked to play had started to click with him.

My prediction is he'll be a top performer for Man City next season and, along with De Bruyne, Haaland, Foden and Silva, one of the main men at Man City and hopefully a major contributor to a successful season. But, again we will have to wait and see which turns out to be correct.

I disagree. Towards the end of the season he came off the bench and almost single-handedly made catastrophic errors that lead to Man City being turfed out of the Champions League.

He scored in the penultimate league game v West Ham in a 2-2 draw and Sky Sports put his face up as the main man for the dramatic last game of the season but he didn’t even appear off the bench for that crucial encounter.

He’s not trustworthy. He’s fine against the fodder in the EPL but in the big games against the real top opposition he’s a liability. It was a catastrophic error on Pep’s behalf to put him on late v Real Madrid.

He’ll get more chances because of his price tag but he’ll never be anything more than a bit part player at City in my view. It won’t hurt City much as they still have better options than him even with Sterling’s departure, but still it’s an horrendous waste of 100m quid. He’ll be phased out by Pep over time I reckon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,211 ✭✭✭LineOfBeauty

Well hey, by the end of next season he'll either be a Golden God or a down in the dumps piece of trash so I guess we gotta wait til then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,882 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Nah, he’ll be neither of those in my opinion. He’ll just continue to be a bit part player. He’ll look good v average opponents but won’t be good enough against the top sides where he really should be consigned to the bench bar a host of injuries to the various better options that City have.

Clement Lenglet joins Spurs on loan from Barca.

Barca now have another player off the wage bill.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,758 Mod ✭✭✭✭DM_7

Fair play to Spurs they went out and got Conte and have done a lot right since January to get a team and squad together for him. They are probably not finished signing players either.

The way the transfer window is going with managers being heavily backed in the transfer market at chelsea spurs arsenal and newcastle there is going be some chase for the european places behind city and pool

Considering how Liverpool have lost their second best player they might right down in the thick of it again.

Every other team in the top 5 (6 if United get a few transfers over the line) have strengthened their squad and starting XI except Liverpool who seem to be weaker at least on paper.

Still a long way to go in the transfer window though.
