Up in Dublin for work, I do wonder when it will no longer feel strange being back in the office. Still very quiet there with the majority of people working from home. Nice to catchup with the few people who were in the office. Was originally planning on a longer run in the evening (fancied running out to Poolbeg lighthose as I've never been) but between losing 45mins making a small balls of finding the hotel I was staying (never trust Apple Maps) and then having bought a ticket for Bryan Adams (show was excellent) in the 3Arena I only had time for an 8K out/back...ran down along the quays and over the east link and out towards Poolbeg area. 8K easy in 44:18 @ 5:32min/km.

    Rest day

    Wednesday 01/06/2022

Late getting this run in, wasn't until after juvenile training and some planning for my club's Open Sports coming up at the weekend. Didn't get on the road until around 8:50. Used the Tom Kelly 8K route around Ardfert with a bit extra at the start and finish to make 9K easy in 51:05 @ 5:40min/km.

    Thursday 02/06/2022

10.2K easy in 57:44 @ 5:39min/km, Community Games coaching this evening so got my run in after work and before that. Just ran to my local village of Causeway...used the 4 and a bit K loop there and back home. Lovely evening starting off the run but the rain came in mid run so got a small soaking. After that over to Ballyduff for some coaching, ball throw and relays were the order of the day.

Ah very good, it was great seeing them live again and was a nice venue for it too. Not sure what the capacity for that venue is but excellent crowd for sure!

8K easy plus 6x strides. Did this over in Ballyheigue to get a more hills into the legs than had been done so far this. Did the strides down in the beach car park there where the surface is flat and decent...and I can fit in 15 seconds of strides from one side to the other before finishing just as I reach the lifeguard hut.

    Saturday 04/06/2022

Tralee parkun in 25:42 (@5:16min/km), 2.5K (@5:55min/km) before hand and 2.5K (@5:45min/km) afterwards to make up 10K for the morning. Legs were pretty tired this morning so running a slower time for parkrun than I'd normally default to was no challenge on the pacing front.

    Sunday 05/06/2022

17K easy in 1:35:52 @ 5:38min/km. Was due to meet some running mates in Ballyheigue for what they were planning on doing (10/13K) so I started off earlier to do around 3.5K before meeting them and was planning to add on a bit more at the end if needs be. Enroute they opted for the 10K loop after about 7.5K into their route I kept it going to the next turnoff so I got my distance up to what I was planning for the morning..16K+. For the last KM I pushed on the pace so that clocked in at 5:14min/km which would be a nice bit faster than PMP 5:20-5:27. After that it was home for a quick shower and change and off to Ardfert for my club's open sports. My duties on the day was race starter for all sprints, sack races and then the relays. It went off great now so very happy with the day and great feedback, first time having the event in 3 years so nice to have it on the calendar again.

Munster Master's Track and Field Championships, MTU Cork

Two events for me on the day, Shot Putt and Weight For Distance. Shot Putt was a bit of a disaster for me...just felt tired and flat for each of my throws so whilst part of my technique (the actual final putting motion was good) my footwork for the glide was awful...probably would have done better overall just putting from a standing position. Worst throws of the year for me, best throw on the day was on my last throw 5.59m. I managed 5.92m (my pb) at the county T&F champs back in early May. Only two in my age category so I go away with a silver medal, masters events are funny like that...can feel like medals for showing up really...my target is just to try improve on previous performance but not today.

On the Weight For Distance, that went much better and I got a pb in the event. Bit of a mistake by the official recording the measurement of my final throw. He wrote it down as 3.05 when the measurer had called it as 3.12, another competitor confirmed that to me. I didn't query it and no matter and will give me a target to hopefully reach again at the nationals. My pb from the recent county track and field championships was 3.04 so only a 1cm pb on the day but will take it. Felt much happier with these throws and managed to build a small bit of momentum with 56lbs ball before releasing it. Silver medal again in my o40 age category, only two in the age category again. Event finished at 5:30pm so it was 8pm before I got home and was too tired for running. A lot to do that evening then getting the entries for the Munster Juvenile T&F champs sorted out for the weekend to come (it never ends!).

    Tuesday 07/06/2022

One of the days when you just can't wait for work to be over, exhausted tired and went for a nap after work. Took a covid test just in case after a good lot of interacting with people over the weekend but all clear. No running.

    Wednesday 08/06/2022

First run since Sunday, 6.5K easy in 36:38 @ 5:38min/km. Slotted this run in at lunchtime as was driving over to Castleisland the second work was finished to assist at the county track and field primary schools championships. Stressful journey after work with heavy traffic, one of the joys of country living is you don't deal with traffic jams very often if ever really for the most part. Anyways I made it on time thankfully, my duties on the day was on the finish line (to call the often controversial 3rd place) for the boys sprints and the distance races. Then only managed the final relay changeover zone for the relays. This is always a great event and it was last held in 2019. A good lot of my club's athletes were competed for their schools and some medalled too which was great.

    Thursday 08/06/2022

Community Games training this evening so got my run in after work instead of at lunchtime, 8K run in 41mins @ 5:06min/km. Given the lack of mileage this week I just felt like making a tempo run out of this instead of another easy run plus the time constraints to fit it in. Event planning this evening for my club's upcoming race on the August Bank Holiday (this carried over into the next day also but getting there).

    Friday 09/06/2022

5K easy at lunchtime, 5K in 27:38 @ 5:30min/km. Traveling up the country this evening so slotted in a short run at lunchtime.

    Saturday 10/06/2022

Over to Templemore to the first of two days of the Munster Juvenile T&F Championships. Got over there early with my father to do a 1K warmup before the parkrun. Templemore parkrun is my home parkrun when I'm up at my parents. It's a small event with 40/50 participants usually, a nice course, 2 and a bit laps around the circumference of the town park. Despite no hills and just one drag you run twice I have never found it to be particularly quick course for me. 24:28 was my time for the day and happy with that was figuring around 24/25 starting off and ran to that pace.

Long day then at the T&F champs with my club's athletes having a good day and a few medals won by them, My daughter picked up a silver medal in the turbo jav in the pairs event and has qualified for nationals for a second year in a row which was great. We didn't get this news confirmed until last night (Mon) as there was some issues with the pairs entries it seems.

Back to my parents place then and an early night ahead of the second day of events to come on Sunday.

    Sunday 11/06/2022

I had an idea of getting up early and getting a 10K run in before heading back to Templemore....whilst I woke up early enough to do that I fell back asleep so too late then after that. Back over to the competition to support/coach our athletes in their events. Again another busy day with ups and downs (such is the nature of the sport) but the athletes did well and proud of their efforts over the weekends.

Didn't get back home to Kerry until after 8pm, shattered...again no running. Not a good week on the running front but just too much going on, things should settle soon over the coming weeks. Looking forward to end of the competition season in a few weeks as it's been very tiring of late with weekends taken over almost completely.

    Weekly total: 26K

    Year to date: 956.5K

For the week ahead I have the local half marathon, Half on the Head on Saturday...I will be running that but on the pacing front I am likely going to approach it like I did Limerick recently...1:53/1:55....at best a marathon paced run, with a conservative first 9/10 miles (also ties in with the nature of the hills on the course) and then a strong finish embracing the downhill for mile 10/11 and the flat finish to home. We'll see what the week brings.

10.5K easy in 58:40 @ 5:35min/km, possibly a little bit on the fast side for an easy run but as my mileage slipped back last week and going into this week that seems to naturally happen but I keep my eye on heart rate and easy was easy.

    Tuesday 14/06/2022

Time constrained this evening for a few reasons, one of them being work (first of two evenings this week for overtime) so only time for a 5K easy...got a phonecall midrun as well from my wife that the collection time for my daughter from her evening activities had changed so needed to get home and then collect her quicker. 5K easy in 27:29 @ 5:29min/km.

    Wednesday 15/06/2022

Last day of general juvenile training this evening and glad to be wrapping things, just been too busy of late and need a break from it all a little. Wrapped things with some fun training/games and a surprise visit from an ice cream van. Lovely evening for it so worked a treat. Hopefully now can switch a bit more focus onto my own training. Got a short run in quite late, 9:40pm start...6K easy in 33:27 @ 5:34min/km.

    Thursday 16/06/2022

Only time for a short run this evening after attending a presentation relating to the club and then back home for a planned upgrade in work. 5K progression run, 5:01, 4:52, 4:52 (incl slow 180 degree turn), 4:32, 4:28.

    Friday 17/06/2022

Rest day today ahead of the Half on the Head tomorrow, very tired today after a late night in work last night which was a small disaster and will get to do it again in a few weeks when I figure what was wrong.

Half on the Head Half marathon

My local half marathon and a must do race, missed it in 2017 due to a mate's stag party up the country but it's a race I plan to do every year where possible. For a variety of reasons, the route of race takes place on routes that I regularly in training or at least significant parts of it so it's as much a home race as can be really, it gets good support from my AC and it's a fundraiser for community organisations. It's also a reference point for me in generally well organized road races, no race is perfect but this is one of the better ones in the county.

Plan for the day was a similar approach to Limerick with 5:30min/km pace approx up till 10miles approx and then pick up the pace for a fast finish. Figuring around 1:53/1:55 finish time and a nice day out sure. Number collection got out of the way the evening before so parked up around 10:15, my wife was doing the 10K race (her first in a long time and got on grand which was nice, luckily she met a neighbour to run&walk it with). I did a brief 1K warm up about 15/20mins before the race was due to start, given my planned run ahead I wasn't even going to bother do a warm up but just said I would to do a quick systems check...laces and so. On the day I worn my now favoured Saucony Triumph's that I've been using on long runs of late, not a fast shoe (I was tempted to try my Next% Tempo for the craic) but the Triumph worked out well in Limerick so figured they'd do fine today.

Just before the start of the race I heard word of route changes which was a surprise, as it turned out it was 10K route which was changing and not the half. I passed on the info to my wife...not sure whether she could work out the route as I told her but trusted it would be marshaled. Just in the few mins before the start I spotted @Swashbuckler from this parts so wished him luck and advised him on the route change for his 10K...it was then covered in the race briefing but I don't think this change was an ideal situation and had hoped I hadn't confused P as well as my wife with my info. With that off we went, and another change this year was the 10K and HM went off together...in previous editions we normally gets what's like a guard of honour as we run past the 10Ks at their former start line on the main street.

I'm going to break this race down into a four sections, the first 8 miles...a 1.5 mile section, 2+ miles down hill and then the finish. I'm also not going to give mile splits because as I ran down the main street of Ballyheigue I glanced at the watch and then dawned...you're still in metric...maybe I should transition back to mile for the marathon training, been a few years since I used them for training.

    Mile 1-8

Took it nice and handy starting off, let them all go and just bed into the easy pace. Nice support from a few locals at the start of the race which is always good. The first mile here is where the race really can be messed up for many here, you've ran about 600m on the flat but then you've another 1K+ of a lot of steady climbing that can take a lot of you if you get it wrong. In the middle of the second mile a club mate went past me, had spoken with him before hand and he was going for 1:50 so left him go. Another club mate came beside me then and bedded in, told him what I was planning and he said grand and he'd stick with me. Interesting development as usually during races I don't talk at all, on the flip side I am renowned talker in running/training groups...not sure why I do that but guess I feel more comfortable talking in training. For the race today I took a different approach...the next 7 miles or so we chatting away and it was great to be honest...and together we zipped away over a good few of the hills. I did some marathon training with this guy back in 2019 when my wife was training for her first marathon and he ran with us a few times. Just a nice fella and easy to pass the time with.

    Mile 8-9.5

Talking eased off here and my club mate told me to push on as he wanted to ease back due to some knee issues he had recently. I was in two minds but he said go for it. This section is an absolute dog as you have a pretty significant climb and a bit of a switchback in it. It's not a bad as the Gap of Dunloe which I did back in Nov but still really testing. Passing by one guy who was struggling I told him 5 mins running and the hills are done (I always revert to time instead of distance for these thoughts mentally), passed a few people on this section but was yearning for the last final cresting over the hill and then down you go.

    Mile 9.5-12

Lovely, the hills (barring a few very minor kicks) are done now, now is the time to kick on. My pacing this point had me averaging around 5:18/5:19min/km and I knew now due to the nature of the route I was only likely to get faster so was thinking was sub 1:50 on the cards. My concentration was a bit off on the downhill as my club mate caught up with at least twice and he said I was leaning back so I just forgot the time and just focused on form and pushed on. Just to confuse things I'll give some splits in KMs (cos that's all I have), 4:46, 4:46, 4:45, 4:35. Passed by the final water station at this stage and delighted to see it manned by some of the juveniles from my club. Some great support there which gave me a boost for finish.I could see a club mate ahead who was going for 1:50 so I kept my eyes to the gap with him in the distance and just focused on shortening it as best I could over the last section of the race.

    To the finish

Now primarily on the flat and running back to the village now, my legs were screaming a little bit but every step is a step closer to being done...few runners ahead so just eyes on them to see who could I catch. Sometimes passing at this stage of races can feel like two lorries overtaking on a motorway...both on the limit...takes a long time to get done! The KM splits were 4:59, 4:59....coming into the last 400/500m to go I was giving it my best as I knew the time was gonna be close. Into the last 200 me and I glance at my watch...push push push. My legs are not going to take a sprint so just has to be a hard drive all the way to finish. Round the final bend, I see the clock roll over the 1:50 (feck)...through the finish line and hit stop. Took a few mins to stand beside the the gazebo for support...that was a tough effort for the last few miles. 4:32min/km was my pace over last bit of the race, really had no more to give. Gun time 1:50:03 (Chip time 1:49:58, nice one and my second fastest time on the course, 1:48:38 back in 2018 is my best effort).

Caught up with some clubmates then for a few mins before heading home for a shower and then back to watch the prize givings in Flahives. Caught up with a few people there including the aformentioned @Swashbuckler of these parts who ran a great 10K to place third. All in all a great day and excellent to have the event back on the cards for the first time since 2019. Will be signing up for next year's event as soon as the entry opens.

    Sunday 19/06/2022

Early on the road over to Cork this morning for the last of the juvenile Munster Championships so left any planned run until evening time. Long day but nice to be able to be there to support my club's athlete's competing. Finished up around 4:30pm and hit the road for home, got pretty tired about an hour into the journey so pulled over for a 20min doze in Ballyvourney. Much better after that. Once I got home I watched the F1 and then just did a 5K easy out/back run from home. 5K easy in 29:06 @ 5:48min/km.

    Weekly total: 54K

    Year to date: 1010.5K

Nothing specific planned for the week ahead, easy mileage for the most part. The fun begins proper next week.

    Tuesday 21/06/2022

10.5K easy in 61mins @ 5:50min/km, legs pretty tired this evening so kept the run on a flat route for this.

    Wednesday 22/06/2022

9K easy in 51:26 @ 5:42min/km, my wife had to pick our daughter up in Ballyheigue at 6:30pm so planned a one way route from home that would take me 45/50mins approx to complete and then had a lift home. Working again this tonight but thankfully not a late one.

    Thursday 23/06/2022

Did my run after work again this evening and before community games coaching (the county final for this is on this weekend) so my run was 7K easy including 4x strides. There is a 3K time trial in Tralee tomorrow evening as a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Ireland so all being well planning to do that.

Ended up taking this as a rest day, the weather was disastrous so I easily persuaded to take the evening off.

    Saturday 25/06/2022

Long day over at the county finals for the community games athletics programme. Think it's only my second time at the event and the last time I was there I was officiating in the javelin competition. This time I was there as one of the coaches for the area I live so it was different experience, bit strange when some of the athletics I coach in my club are competing for different areas than where I live.

When I got home I managed to a 10.5K easy run (@5:52min/km in 1:01:44) in between the showers.

    Sunday 26/06/2022

Community Games finished up a bit earlier today so home in the mid afternoon, smaller crowd today but horrendous weather conditions again...your heart would go out to athletes waiting for their events on track and then when they are competing...the distance races a real slog....like running uphill I commented to someone with the headwind they had on the back straight. My daughter picked up a bronze medal for herself on a mixed relay team so that was a nice bonus. When I got home I went for a nap so it was around 4:30 by the time I was going out for my run. Pretty lazy going out the door and timed my run to be back in time to watch the National Senior Track & Field Championships on RTE at 6pm....bit annoyed to find out when I got home the coverage was delayed due to the quarter finals coverage of some other competition in a different code....an almost parochial affair of the same 3/4 teams who play each other year in year out...no interest at all! Flicked on the youtube stream to watch the men's 5000m race and a cracker of race that one. Brilliant seeing what our home based athletes can do. When eventually the main event got going on RTE it was great to see some fine racing, the women's sprints and the men's middle distance races really caught the eye. The women's sprinters are just all driving each other now to higher levels, hopefully the standards continue to rise and the country sees some reward from it in the international competitions to come in the remainder of the year.

For my own case my run was 13K easy, I added in 6x strides at the end of this...legs felt the better for having done so also.

    Weekly total: 50K

    Year to date: 1060.5K

Next week, begins week 1 of Dublin Marathon Training.....looks like this will be a winter training block with the weather we're having. Least the temperatures are decent...now about the driving wind and rain.

    Monday 27th June

    Rest

    Tuesday 28th June

    7.6K easy in 43 @ 5:39min/km, lunchtime run.

    Wednesday 29th June

    Rest

    Thursday 30th June

    9K easy in 51:47 @ 5:45min/km, club run.

    Friday 1st July

    8K easy in 47:53 @ 5:58min/km

    Saturday 2nd July

7K easy in 41:22 @ 5:54min/km, evening time run after a long day in Tullamore at the juvenile championships.

    Sunday 3rd July

14.1K easy in 1:17:00 @ 5:30min/km. Running with a few running mates on the newly open greenway between Fenit and Tralee, around a 7K section is open at the moment so just an out and back run for this. Lovely place to run, lovely surface

Happy with the first week down, having actually read the Hanson's book fully this time I feel a lot more prepared for the marathon training this time around. I need to be careful in situations where running with others as the pace typically doesn't actually go in line with my actual true easy paces. There is a social side to training that I like to have as well in my week so will just slot these in where appropriate. Given my mileage was already in line with the mileage outlined for week 4/5 I'm going to hold steady at that for a few weeks and let the plan catch up.

DM Training Week 2 (Hanson Beginner)

    Monday 4th July

    Rest

    Tuesday 5th July

8K easy in 48mins @ 6min/km. We were over in Trabolgan for a few days staying with my sister's family. Just did an out and back run to Whitegate. Not my most favourite road I've ever run on with a lot of high speed traffic and no road markings but due to a lack of phone coverage I couldn't plan a better route. Headed over to the Cork City Sports that evening, fantastic event and glad to have attended, real buzz to it all and some top class performances on show. Lots to highlight but two to mention were Sarah Healy in the women's 3K, literally diving/falling to the line as her legs gave way over the last few strides and Darragh McElhinney lighting up the place in the men's 3K. Thought it was a real nice touch of the guy that paced him for the first 4 laps stayed on track to cheer him on after finishing pacing. My second time seeing McElhinney live (was at the Eurocross last year) and he really is superb. Two great young hope for now and the future.

    Wednesday 6th July

Rest, back home to Kerry this evening. Felt pretty bad on the drive home to Kerry, just a bit of headache but got very shivery once I landed at home and just went to bed. Couldn't sleep them with a high temperature, for some reason my arms felt like they were on fire and lower back quite sore. Negative covid test but had my suspicions.

    Thursday 7th July

After a crap night, took another test and confirmed a postive result, have been waiting for this to come as couldn't figure how I had managed to avoid it so far as some people I know have had it multiple times. That will no doubt wipe out probably much of the next week of training. Opinions from those who've had it would be welcome here. Probably a good time to get it as even if I get back running end of next week I've a few weeks to get my mileage back up before any form of SOS sessions in my plan.

Sorry to hear this but defo better to get it now rather than when you are peaking with your marathon training. I had it really bad at Christmas, I had to ease myself back into my running. Everyone is completely different, for now I'd say rest as much as you can while it's bad then judge it yourself once you're ok to go back out, listen to your body, you know it best!

Hopefully it doesn't affect you too badly & you are back training soon enough 🤗

Hi Diego, I'm about a week ahead of you. I tested positive last Tuesday after a crappy run. Ended up missing Wed, Thur & Fri. Feeling a lot better on the Saturday, so tried a run, had to cut it short, sweating buckets, elevated heart rate and laboured breathing.

Took Sunday off and tried another run on Monday, went okish. I've ran every day since and am returning to normal but know I won't be doing sessions anytime soon.

The indicators for me are constant blocked nose, elevated resting HR and running HR. When those markers return, I'll try a session.

As @Laineyfrecks said above, I'm just glad it happened now and not closer to the big day.

    Hope you feel better soon

Thanks x2 for the advice, it's good to get some feedback and that ties in with what I'd expect as a minimum time wise. I think a conservative return rather than trying to rush it will stand to me. A few times in the last few years I've had chest colds and a complete non runner for anything for anything from a week to 10 days. I can recall trying a run after about 5 days with one once and getting 400m up the road and going no way as you can hardly breath. To be honest I expected I would get it at some stage between now and the marathon....on odds alone most people around me have had it at this stage and unless I was going to put myself into isolation for 4 months or so was bound to get it. Glad to get this early into the plan for sure. Sympthoms wise, just like a bad cold but an achy lower back oddly enough.

DM Training Week 2 (Hanson Beginner) continued

Rest of the week written off due to covid, felt awful....no chance of running even if I wanted too.

DM Training Week 3 (Hanson Beginner)

    Monday 11th July - Wednesday 13th July

Still in isolation for covid, unfortunately my work colleague was off on annual leave this week so I was working when ideally wouldn't have been. Managed as best as I could. Usually starting a bit later in the morning, napping at lunchtime and napping at 5pm after work and there was a few unplanned naps as well when I just had to. Not an ideal situation and not in good form at all with it. To be honest I was surprised with how much covid knocked the stuffing out of me, part of me had wondered had I had it before and not noticed but there was no doubted it. I do recall feeling awful after getting my first two vaccine's but glad I had them given how I felt when I eventually got the thing.

    Thursday 14th July

First run back, just took it easy and did an out and back 5K run from home. 5.2K in 30:46 @ 5:55min/km. Effort wise it was fine, no issues with breathing barring maybe small bit of nasal congestion.

    Friday 15th July

7K easy in 40:49 @ 5:50min/km, pace wise this one was a bit off. That's often a side effect for me is that I find it hard to pace it proper slow if I've not been running much of late. It settles down as the mileage increases. Whilst my isolation has ended the current advice is that you should not mix with other households for another 3 days so it meant a planned weekend away with some friends from college and their families was off the cards. Very disappointed to miss out it as it's a few years since I met some of them in person but house sharing with the risks involved is not a runner.

    Saturday 16th July

Rest day, pretty tired today. Setting my alarm to watch the relay team in action at 3:50am on youtube on my phone not the best idea as found it hard to sleep after.

    Sunday 17th July

Said I'd try get my run done before the heat picked up too much, didn't start it till around 9:45 and it was horrible slog from start to finish with a bit of stopping and starting. I stopped 3 times in the last 5K for a minute or two. Got a bit of a giving out to when I got home as maybe I was trying too much too soon.

    10.3K in 1:01:07 @ 5:59min/km (elapsed time was 1:05:47).

    Weekly total: 22.5K

    Year to date: 1137.2K

Glad to be back running but recovery is going to take a bit longer than I would like. Will try follow the training plan proper this week and see how things go. Would hope that as it's all easy running and two rest days that I can manage it.

    Hi Diego

Hope you start to feel better soon. I had the nasal congestion, its annoying for sure.

Do you track heart rate? I took 4 days off over a 5 day period before starting to run more frequently. Took another 9/10 days of easy running before I dared do a session.

I felt ready for the session only when resting and running easy heart rate were close to normal.

Could be worth keeping an eye on your HR

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭diego_b

Thanks, fingers crossed...I'm not the best in hot weather tbh so that would no doubt be a small aspect to this morning at least.

I do track heart rate and my resting heart rate settled down to normal a few days after getting covid but I've not noted it since I started back running so will check it tomorrow morning. Certainly my easy pace heart rate is not where it was pre-covid...I'd have been in the 130-140 at the paces I was running this week but probably 10-15 bpm higher at the moment.

For the next two weeks at least all runs on the plan I am following are easy runs...majority of them 7/8K sort of thing.

Sorry to hear of the covid setback, D - fair play to you though for heeding that advice about household mixing - I would certainly be of the opinion that isolation periods versus actual transmission risk has been too short. Didn't realise that was the current advice but makes sense and fair play to you for observing it - I would suspect many don't. The vaccine is a huge boon but we are not there yet. Just back from Germany where the mask mandates on public transport e.g. are still in force, and rightly so given the facts.

Don't be disappointed about the post-covid difficulties. I'm a bit blue in the face from posting on my own and other threads about my own experiences and how much a mild dose affected my own running for a good 8 weeks I would say, although obviously the first 4 are the most critical. And yes - as always, elevated HR is the giveaway. You simply can't argue with it.

    Hang in there!

Thanks D, yeah just unfortunate timing but not sure when is a good time to get it! For sure the mask side of things will probably need revisiting, in my own case it was only in the last month or so I'd stopped wearing one going into shops and indoor settings with crowds etc so a bit disappointed that if I'd kept up the habit then maybe I might have avoided it for a bit longer.

We'll take it week by week for sure, at worst I'll probably just to have to change my plan/goals around Dublin Marathon, hardly a big issue in any scale of things.

    Tuesday 19th July

8K in 46:43 @ 5:50min/km, just an out and back run from home. Running past a house that has quite a large/fast dog in resident, who has a least once before came out to follow me on the road. This time he appeared to have no way out of his yard....it's part of a loop I'd like to run on more often so might try running past it a little bit more often so the dog gets bored of seeing me.

    Thursday 21st July

5K in 30:44 @ 6:09min/km, ran with my daughter on her bike. Felt this run a bit tougher than Tuesday's for some reason. Having to concentrate a lot on with my 10 year old was doing with her bike as she doesn't have much road sense yet.

    Friday 22nd July

Trip up to Dublin for work, staying in what will very soon be our former apartment in Sallins. Had plans for an evening out with some work colleagues as one is retiring so took the opportunity to do a run in Sallins before work on the canal tow path where I learned to run back in 2013. It was the place I did most of my couch to 5K. The place has changed a bit since we moved away in 2015 and a new significant flyover the has been added as a part of the Sallins bypass. The bypass of the village is a great addition in fairness and as I run around now I can spot loads of new routes for potential runs. One of my favourite things for running in the area in general was that it was a very safe place to run. Due to the Millenium park beside Naas I could run from my house and do a 10K-16K loop running for nearly the entire part on footpath/cycle lane type surface and not have to worry about being on the road itself. Now probably 95% of the running I do in a given year is on open roads that are not marked/no hard shoulder and will never have a footpath. Anyways I reminised a small bit as I ran on the route the various challenges of the couch to 5K back in the day...first running injuries from sports...shin splits/calf injuries and the rest but they all passed and I'm still running. 5K in 30:44 @ 6:09min/km.

I know its not what you want to hear but from reading about Murph and some others experiences on here it took more than a couple of weeks to feel right again. Hopefully things take a turn for you sooner rather than later but don't force it. Longevity is more important than short term goals.

    Saturday 23rd July

In Sallins and finally to get back to parkrun after a 6 week break for a variety of reasons. I had met my old work boss the night before and he was due to volunteer at Castletown parkrun (one I've never done) so I was debating between that one, Kilcock and Naas (my old home parkrun). In the end I went with Castletown. Nice two lapper of a route with a fair bit of a pull from 2K to 3K and then you get to finish the last half a K on a good pull as well. I enjoyed the route and managed my effort/pace throughout for a 10K effort. Even if the time doesn't align for what would be a normal 10K for me it's where I am at the moment based on effort...maybe in a few weeks it will gradually get back to what I would like to see for such an effort. I got passed by an older guy around 3K into the route and kept tabs with him for the rest of the run, in the last half a K I made a move to pull up close to behind him, I made one kick in the last 50m to go past but he responded and I had no chance. Got chatting with him afterwards and he told me he's an IMRA runner now (previously an ultra runner)..I joked with him saying I was at nothing trying to race him!

24:31 was my time for the morning.

1.5K warm up before and the same after meant 8K for the morning.

Nice to catch my old boss again who was marshalling on the route so had a chat with him at the end of the event.

Afterwards heading back into the city centre to meet a friend of mine and his family home from Canada for a few weeks so great to catch up for a few hours before hitting the road for home.

    Sunday 24th July

Back home in Kerry and took a lie in after a few busy days so no run until around lunchtime, used a former lockdown route from back in the day to fit an 8K route into what is normally a 5.2K loop with some outs/backs on random lanes. 8K in 46:55 @ 5:51min/km.

    Weekly total: 34.5K

    Year to date: 1179.7K

Much better week this week than last week thankfully, with the scheduled 5 runs in across the 7 days. The parkrun was tough but nice to do to see where I am at. For the week ahead it's also 5 days running which should see me hit 40K so getting back to where I'd like to be.

3 weeks to catch up on here

DM Training Weeks 5 (Hanson Beginner)

    Monday 25th July

    Off

    Tuesday 26th July

    8K easy in 46:32 @ 5:49min/km

    Wednesday 27th July

    Off

    Thursday 28th July

Up at my parents place in Laois as was working in Dublin for the day. One of my colleagues (and friends) retiring from the company after 45 years service. Some going that! 7.5K easy in 44:03 @ 5:51min/km. Final planning meeting that evening then on zoom for my club's race on Sunday, all set now.

    Friday 29th July

    Lunchtime run, 7.5K easy in 42:53 @ 5:43min/km.

    Saturday 30th July

Morning run as was heading to Templemore for the Munster B's in which was daughter was competing. 7K easy in 39:50 @ 5:41min/km. Great excitement then later on as both of athletes competing on behalf of the club medaled. In my daughter's case we made some changes to her run up for the turbo jav in the last month and she pulled off a 2 meter pb and a silver medal so delighted for her. My heart was in my mouth watching her on the run up for her 2nd throw (they only get 3 throws so got her to play it safe with her old technique on the first throw but go with the new way for the second throw and depending how we went that would decide for the third through). On the second throw, she threw a lot further and into the medal positions and then did the same again on her 3rd throw with the new run up. Great to see the progression and the work she has put in over the summer will stand to her next year. Back home to Kerry that evening.

    Sunday 31st July

Early start this morning as was over to Banna for 6am for setup for the race. A busy morning between all the various tasks, my role was head marshall on the day but like anything there's much more than that. First task was to check the route for any issues and setup the K markers with a clubmate, I had the road already marked with line marker from a few weeks previous from when the course was measured. After that I setup the water stations, back to the registration area then to brief the marshals at 8:30/8:45 and then it was onto the start line for 9:20 for the race briefing. At 9:30 sharp the race started and all went well thankfully. Following the race start I headed back to the finish area to keep an eye on things there and assisted on the MC front and then the presentations. Following the race, cleanup and all done around 2pm. Took it handy for the afternoon and left it till evening time then for my own run. 10.5K easy in 62mins @ 5:59min/km.

DM Training Weeks 6 (Hanson Beginner)

    Monday 1st August

Traveling over to London for a break my wife and daughter, I had misread my training plan and didn't realize there was a scheduled run that day so ended up missing it. Had spent the morning packing and then it was around 8:30pm when we got to the hotel so just left it off for the day and back on plan tomorrow.

    Tuesday 2nd August

    12 x 400m speed w 400m recovery, 2K w/u & c/d which worked out as

    2K w/u in 12:55 @ 6:24min/km, 400m splits in 2:04, 2:05, 1:46, 1:58, 2:00, 2:06, 2:03, 2:02, 2:05, 2:01, 2:01, 2:04, 2K c/d in 11:46 @ 5:51min/km

Staying about 1K from Hyde park so used the park for a lot of my runs over there especially the speed work. I wasn't sure the best place in the park for this but took a chance on what would be the bottom right hand corner of the park as you look at a map. One was that it seemed relatively quieter than other parts of the park and also some tree cover (which did cause some GPS issues) but it was useful to have with the heat/sun over there. I found these very hard, I think a combination of a busy few days coming into it and also I was a little bit out of my comfort zone not doing such speed work in more familiar surroundings and it's been a while since I did proper speed work, not even done fartleks or strides recently. Pace wise, I was targeting 1:50-2:00 for the 400 but on the day I couldn't do anymore than I did so most were a few secs over the 2min mark.

    Wednesday 3rd August

    Off

    Thursday 4th August

After the scheduled rest day I was feeling pretty good although averaging 30K steps a day as we took in the city but all good. The plan for today had a 8k tempo run with 2K w/u and 2K c/d.

    Again did this in the morning and used Hyde Park & Kensington Gardens for this. 2K in 11:56 @ 5:55min/km, 8K in 41:45 @ 5:13min/km, 2K in 11:35 @ 5:41min/km.

Saw the Back to the Future West End show that evening and it was excellent in fairness. I was a bit wary as BTTF is one of my all time favourite movies, I think it's pretty much perfect but they did a great job and the special effects with the car on stage were very well done. Excellent case too so would recommend it if you get a chance to go see it.

    Friday 5th August

7.5K easy in 45:55 @ 6:07min/km. Not too hard to start to slow down proper for the easy runs now. Knew that would happen when the mileage went up and the SOS work started. I changed my route this morning and headed south of where we staying and down through Chelsea, across the Thames and looped through Battersea Park (I later learned this park is a favourite for runners in the area as it's flat and I did note that). Had a small bit of difficulty getting my bearings on the return leg to the hotel so had to turn on the GPS on my phone for directions. Baking hot morning even before 9am when I was out running.

    Saturday 6th August

Bushy parkun, I did consider other options but having never done Bushy parkrun before it was one I really wanted to do. Wasn't 100 percent certain about how to get out there but worked out easy enough in the end. My wife and daughter said they'd come with me and were going to walk it. Early start as we got on the underground (District Line) around 7ish and out to Wimbledon and a change over to the overground service to Hampton Court. About a 10-15min walk after that so we arrived at the start area at 8:30. When we got to the start area I was very excited to see the home of parkrun and think this where it all started. I had done very little reccy about the route but I did know it was one lap course. Did a 1K warm up just to get the systems going a little and then back to the start. The start was something else as you line up in a very wide line that is a good few people deep to and then away you go on the grass...the sound of all the runners in the first 200m on the grass together was like the grand national...the noise of the footsteps was a serious rumble but very cool to listen too. The first 1-2K of the route was tight/busy and on very dusty compacted gravel which is fine to run on but the gravel dust really kicked up a lot of as the crowds ran so I did note some runners keep to the left to run on the grass that ran parallel to the regular course. After about half way it opened up a bit more so was able to push up a bit and gain a few positions. Coming into the last K I pushed on again to finish strong, wasn't sure what my time would be but guessed around 24-25mins as the start was slow. In the end it was a nice symmetrical 24:24.

1K w/u in 5:51, 3K c/d in 27:24 @ 9min/km (jogged back to meet my wife and daughter on the route and got a few extra K in that way)

356th place out of 1384 runners. I'll probably never do as large a parkrun ever again I guess!

    Sunday 7th August

13K in 1:12:48 @ 6:17min/km, I used this run for more touring and sight seeing so ran down to Fulham first to see Craven Cottage and then came back via Chelsea and did a lap outside the outside of Stamford Bridge. Found an interesting graveyard on this run Brompton Cementary so meaning to read up on that a bit. Definitely somewhere I recognize from the tv/movies before when I ran through it. Enjoyed the run and bit of touring around the area....found a convienently located Ferrari dealership not far from Earl's Court. I guess the folks who live in the area need such a car dealership nearby, Lamborghini one also about 5 minutes away from the Ferrari one so least they have some choice.

DM Training Weeks 7 (Hanson Beginner)

    Monday 8th August

Still in London until Thursday so another few runs there to go. 7.5K easy in 44:10 @ 5:53min/km.

    Tuesday 9th August

    8 x 600m speed w 400m recovery, 2K w/u & c/d

Using the same area as the previous week these went a lot better I felt. Still found them really hard particularly the last two, the heat was a killer..started them at 9:15 but really should have got out earlier. Not great for early morning runs and 8am is about as good as it gets for me on that front.

    2K w/u in 12:18 @ 6:06min/km, 600m splits, 2:46, 2:58, 2:52, 2:52, 2:54, 2:56, 2:48, 2:49, 2K c/d in 11:33 @ 5:33min/km

    Wednesday 10th August

Off, we took in the Harry Potter Studio Tour on this day....highly recommended but make sure to book well in advance.

    Thursday 11th August

Back home to Kerry today, didn't get out till nearly 8pm for this and was just going to do an easy run rather than the scheduled run but after 2K I said feck it...will give it a go. 2K in 11:51 @ 5:54min/km, 8K in 41:27 @ 5:10min/km, 2K in 11:21 @ 5:39min/km. Pace wise the tempo section is a bit faster as around 1.5K of the route here is a downhill (I was being nice to myself after traveling that morning).

    Friday 12th August

7K easy in 41:45 @ 5:58min/km, up to Laois after that as National Masters Championships on the next day in Tullamore and I was competing in shot putt and weight for distance.

    Saturday 13th August

National Masters Track & Field Championships

A good day, my club had 6 athletes competing across a range of events, throws, sprints, jumps, race walking and all 6 athletes medaled which was great. In my case it was shot putt first at 11am, 6 were entered in my age category but on the the day only 4 showed for the event. I knew the name/form of two of the others in my age cat but the other guy was an unknown. My first throw was 5.99 which was a pb by 7cm. I was surprised at that and thought I'll finally crack the 6m today surely with one of my three remaining throws. The others in my age category threw after me, the first two easily beat my throw but the 4th guy who I did not was a bit tardy to coming up to throw (he was on the phone) and then had to go back to put his singlet on. So when he went to throw I was wondering and thankfully he didn't appear to able to throw as far as I could (not that I throw far). As we went through the rounds I stayed in bronze position but my throws did not improve 5.82, 5.56, 5.27. My opponite for the bronze medal got 5.84 with his final throw and that confirmed me with the bronze. I was delighted as masters events can by funny when sometimes you basically get a medal for having shown up but this time I actually had to beat someone to get a medal.

After that I had around a 5 hour wait for the weight for distance, again there was 4 in my age category competing...two guys from the shot put earlier who easily beat me and a different unknown guy. As was the trend for the day this guy was missing his singlet and bib when it came to his throw so had to run back down the field to get it. Seemed to be a trend here...anyways in this case this unknown guy took the 3rd place and I finished in 4th with my final throw of 3.04m my best. Took me a long time to get going with the event but I was well back from the medals. I like the event but need a lot more work at it.

Should have been a 10K easy run on this day also but my parents had a BBQ ready when we got back to their house and the BBQ won out.

    Sunday 14th August

16K Long 1:32:57 @ 5:49min/km. First designated long run on the plan, having not ran the previous day as scheduled I went with the faster side of pacing for this.

    Weekly total: 54.3K

    Year to date: 1329.4K

That's my catchup done now after a busy few weeks, next few weeks will be a lot quieter so will just tick off the runs as they come. Pretty happy with how training has gone so far with the plan, there was two missed runs in the last few weeks which is not ideal but feel like I'm on track at the moment.
