Love the colour ! Which colour is that ?

It looks like a variant of the Makena Turquoise Metallic ?

Did a long run in France in the 58kWh ID.3. 550km from Roscoff to Bordeaux.

3 stops for quick (~15-20 mins) topups. Car was ready each time before we were and it charged at 101kW each time.

Used Ionity twice (WeCharge) and TotalEnergies once (plugsurfing).

what I was really pleased about was the kWh/100km figure…. 20kWh/100km… that was a fully loaded car (5 on board) plus a roof box and driving at legal limit on the motorway all the way.

I’ll post pics of Ionity Kergoet and Ionity Vendee (Edit: Cant seem to post the pics, maybe later.... tan to work on now!)

Kergoet was empty while I was there. Vendee was full but one left a minute after I arrived so no actual delay. Tesla SuC’s we’re busy too

My head would melt trying to figure out all the charge points in a foreign country + if they are available when we get there etc.

Though I was happy to see yesterday that I could get around 380 kms on a charge at legal limits in the Tour 5 or possibly at 100 Km/hr 450 +.

I reckon this time of year off the motorway at 14 Kwh/100 Kms the tour 5 could get 550 Kms on a charge or more realistically 500 kms or 341 miles before you'd need to be plugged in, I was easily able to achieve 14 Kwh/100 kms off the motorway the other day.

How do you fit a roof box to the id3 ?

That's about what I used to get most of the time non motorway in my old 58kWh. What's looking good though is that the winter range should be shortly much improved providing you don't want to be in a sauna..😁

Since I got 2.3 update I noticed much improved efficiency on shorter trips, I don't remember seeing the battery heater come on at all but will keep an eye on it in the cooler months.

I'd really like to see the option to pre heat for fast charging, I actually haven't fast charged since I got the 2.3 update to see if it made any difference.

I find the heat in electrics not accurate as in ICE cars, any ICE car with auto climate control I could set to 21 or 22 deg and it would be plenty warm in electrics I have to set it higher + electrics seem to blow out cold air once "warmed" up kind of counterintuitive really instead of just ramping down the fan, I hate the way it constantly blows cold air out the front vents, the I3 and Leaf were the same.

I had said a long time ago that I wouldn't expect existing cars to get 3.0 software in 2022, possibly end of 23 at the earliest and possibly never. So much for having a car with OTA update capabilities, VW have failed miserably but at the end of the say the car is performing well and I am quite happy with it and the range so there really isn't much to update, the only real update that would do wonders is allowing proper fast charge and decent charge curve even my old i3 could take full power all the way to 85% that was 2016 tech though a cold i3 battery could charge at as little as 22 Kw because as usual the battery couldn't be warmed up prior to fast charging which was another major reason I was delighted to have the Rex.

When you get the future big update isn't battery heating supposed to only start at 0c, compared to 8c atm? It would then rarely come on at all for me even in the colder weather, because I rarely used car early in morning when frosty. It should make winter driving a much better experience, similar to my Model 3, where the winter and summer difference is not that big. (especially on short trips).

Ionity for the win. Nothing to figure out really as it’s a network you are already signed up to.

2.4 is what you need, not 3.0, for the BMS fixes and timed charging

2.4 rollout is starting this month. VW have confirmed it via the owners group a few days ago.

Would have to be a lot more chargers than here.

I don't know about that, it would be rather low if it were only to come on a "battery temp" of 0 deg C ?

If that were true then fast charging would be even slower if plugging in below 12 or 13 degrees as it used to heat the battery to.

I've already noticed a huge difference on short trips when the battery would be below 12 degrees C.

Is that the one where we all have to take the cars back and get a 1.0L 3 cylinder non turbo Polo for the day ? lol or can it be done OTA ?

VW have confirmed it is reducing the turn on point to 0C and then only stepping it up in increments rather than jumping straight to 6kW PTC heating.

Heating when navigating to a charger is also supposed to be coming but not sure if that’s in 2.4,

Yeah if there are enough chargers along the route where you want to go it's not too bad, I'd love to take the id3 to her Parents home in Germany but think it would take a bit too long. It would eat too much into holidays travelling unless site seeing along the way maybe.

It would be nicer if we weren't on an Island, be nice to be able to do proper road trips without the torture of Airports, Planes and Ferries, though I rather a ferry than Airports and planes any day.

Yeah they go from one extreme to the other, be nice to give battery conditioning as an option along with preheat for fast charging.

I wonder would low battery temps effect acceleration and regen ? I noticed sluggish acceleration in the i3 if I hadn't it plugged in and preheated, it only heated to 10 deg C but it's intention was to allow max acceleration and regen.

I'm just happy I don't need to rely on fast charging much because the slow charging speeds would drive me bonkers but as I said I wonder how 2.3 would have effected the charging curve, speed if at all ?

It is indeed Makena Turquoise Metallic, my samsung s21 camera makes it look more blue than green

I don’t think so. My experience is that the car is ready before we are and that’s with the smaller battery. Your 77kWh would have zero issues, you need to stop anyway!

it affects it alright. Quite a bit. Needs to be at 14C to get full power and regen, iirc.

but as I said I wonder how 2.3 would have effected the charging curve, speed if at all ?

not at all. There wasn’t much in 2.3 but nothing at all around BMS updates, that’s what 2.4 is all about.

Google says 10hr 23 mins to get to get to her folks place in Germany, 1,023 Kms from Cherbourg. I'd have to stop a lot for the Boys anyway, they'd go nuts for that long in the car lol. Stop in Paris along the way but I never drove on the right..... It's a lot of time travelling out of holidays.

It's a pity Google Maps doesn't show the charger locations on route with the ability to select the different providers.

@79 c per Kwh it wouldn't be cheap.

    haven’t you heard of abetterrouteplanner.com?

it does all the research for you, down to weather, battery size etc. Simples.

Apologies as I know it's not directly id3 related, but does relate to the current conversation.

A quick tip that might work for you - on the Ionity thread a while ago there was the new App 'Bonnet' that gave a great rate at Ionity... But after a shirt time, Ireland was removed from their supported regions.

Both France and Germany are still listed as regions and when I checked the App it showed Ionity chargers in these countries.

Prices seem to range from €0.41c per kWh for Pay as you Go and different subscription (refill) tiers that goes all the way down to as little as €0.30c if you go for their highest monthly tarrifs (or Refills as they call them). Seems you can subscribe from month to month and not a 12-month tie-in like ionity directly.

Have a scan back through the Ionity thread and you could get someone's referral code to save a couple of quid

Outside of that, Bonnet is quite useless for the Irish Market for now.

I have a question. The car show its connected to 4G, even after I connected it to my home wifi. I assume its using the e-sim to connect to 4G. Does anyone know for how long this service is free?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 275 ✭✭rocketspocket

All car updates are free with no time limit - you can buy add-ons (e.g. 25GB for 80EUR) if you want to use internet radio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,516 ✭✭✭jogdish

I've used the internet radio via phones wifi, its fiddly but hardly ever use internet radio. Other than that I never got the point of the on board wifi given the ubiquity and quality of personal devices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 113 ✭✭smpillai11

That's great to have connectivity for free. I assume the sat-nav and we-connect uses the same connection. I dont intend to use internet radio anytime soon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 275 ✭✭rocketspocket

Correct - i got a free trial - fine for internet radio but i use android auto. when V3 comes along you'll be-able to use spotify directly on the console so (for some) that maybe more of a reason to buy a package but again, no better than using android auto/apple careplay..

There's an update for android auto coming which will allow you to have spotify and sat nav for example at the same time which would be very welcome

Google maps has EV charging points, click More and scroll down to Electric vehicle charging:
