A win for everyone except the winner is delaying the inevitable. Hard not to be impressed by the fight and skill Serena showed tonight.

Thats mad! Could be a few strange names late on.

    One of sports most unlikable…

    a fooking horror!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 275 ✭✭squigglestrebor

I was thinking that but Tans only 24 , so id assume a sister or a niece? Not too many female players that would have had a kid in their teens!

That was the one where she got a warning for coaching and pretended she was falling victim to sexism.

Things really opened up in Nadals section. Cressy could be very dangerous.

Will be interesting to see how far the Brits get.....I think 3 woman through and 5 men. The hyperbole will be insane!

Harriet Dart still to play her first round match I think as well.

Cameron Norrie's next round looks very winnable, Jack Draper was good today but Alex De Minaur will be difficult. Murray against Isner will be tough - his serve is massive.

Oh yeah you could be right. I guessed Tan was a bit older than that tbh.

I've never really understood the medias obsession with her. It's not as if she particularly likeable, or has endeared herself over time, or that her game is even that exciting.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,753 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

She's won 23 grand slams and will go down as the best woman to ever play the game. In terms of profile she's up there with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Why wouldn't the media be "obsessed" with her?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

Happy she lost. She's a terrible loser. Screeching like a feral cat when she won a point. She was completely gassed not long into the 3rd set. Tan was very average.

Time to pack it in but she is 40 in fairness. So one dimensional now. If the ball sits up for her she still has the power but she can't run or get around the court.

Tbf her and Venus' story is pretty exceptional, coming from nowhere to completely dominate the women's game, a game that very few black people actually played at the time. I've never liked her, as her behaviour on the court has been absolutely atrocious for most of her career especially when losing, Venus had a bit more class and grace on the court, more likeable. She is held up as a role model and all her poor behaviour is always excused by those who should know better. I would respect and admire her achievements and even today she showed great fighting qualities even though she was clearly struggling to move at the end, but, as a person she leaves a lot to be desired.

I get the dislike for Serena on here with the way shes acted in the past, however that posters comment was silly at best. i dont get the hatred for Raducanu and the womens tour in general.I wonder is there scope for having grand slam threads separated for mens and womens competitions in the future as its clear as day a few frequent posters have a misogynistic attitude towards women / womens tennis.

I'd find it hard to not give the best woman ever title to Graf tbh. She played and won a lot at a time when she was up against two of the other all time greats in Navratilova and Seles and has a better winning %.

Would probably agree here , although not understanding why the media are obsessed with Serena is insane. Haha.

And the internet trolls ripping the racket out of her hand and slamming it into the court.

Body shaming? Constant put downs of female players , a grand slam champion being one of them? Have a look through the in between grand slam thread, a lot of neck beard type stuff. They are seperate competitions wouldnt be a big deal to seperate them in future.

Body shaming? these are elite professional athletes, not dave and mairead down at your local lawn club, it is absolutely fair to comment on their fitness to play in a match at a major tournament. Get a grip.

Also it's not like Raonic didn't cop a load of abuse for that photo of him practicing with Schwartzman with a belly on him.

If you turn up at a Grand Slam looking decidedly unfit then it's going to get commented on.

I don't see what you're coming at? There are some fine female players who have a good on court attitude and who play the game to the best of their ability. There are others like Serena, who was a great player but for quite a number of years past has been trading heavily on her reputation. Her on court carry on, particularly when losing and particularly against younger up an coming women, has often verged on bullying. Compare her to someone like Federer who played hard but fair and treated opponents with respect. What I can never understand though is why spectators at these events lap it up from the likes of Serena and root for her. As mentioned above, Venus W had/ has on the whole a far more decent on court attitude. There are equivalents in mens tennis too, there's one or two there think they too have a God given right to win.

Get a grip yourself. You obviously havent read through the threads. Countless examples. Grand slam threads should be seperate, they are are seperate competitions.

Women players get regularly abused on the in between slam thread. Deny it all yas want , maybe a wta thread should be set up for actual fans of womens tennis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,395 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

What do you mean? Serena Williams herself is personally responsible for her on court histrionics and bullying of younger women opponents. I watched her a number of years ago in a French Open final I think it was, where a much younger opponent was getting the better of her and was a set up. What did Serena do - started throwing wee tantrums and limping about a bit, then came back and demolished her more innocent opponent who seemed to ease off a bit. She had her in tears after if I recall correctly. No time at all for her as a player in the last several years. She had her day and good riddance now :)

Your arguing with yourself? I havent said there should be a womens thread because of Serena. I literally said i understand peoples dislike of her and then brought other examples why it would be beneficial to have a seperate thread , the grand slam champ i was referring to was Emma Raducanu. I agree with everything you have written above haha!

A lot of the criticism of the women's game on here, while over the top at times has been warranted. It has to be acknowledged that at the top end of the women's game ( top 20) the players have been consistently inconsistent. While overall I'd say the women's game has more strength in depth than before, by that I mean players in the top 100 are in general better than they have been in the past, but, at the very top ( top 10 especially) they aren't as good as players in the past. There's no great rivalries in the game, Osaka probably the best player is clearly disinterested in the game, Barty's surprise retirement hasn't helped, Serena up until the last couple of years just had to turn up to slams regardless of fitness and form and was making slam finals. Hopefully with Swiatek recent form, others might follow her lead, up their game and become more consistent.

Btw the men's game is heading in the same direction once Nadal & Djokovic move on, the players behind them just don't seem to have that winner's mentality, with the exception of Alcaraz.

I agree with a lot of this. The fact that Kontaveit a lass who has done nothing in slams is ranked 2 for this event is dire.

I understand why the media get excited by Serena because she is one of the few who does transcend the game, for better or worse she is a massive draw.

Iga does look a player and its great that she is so consistent, the tour has been ruined by girls winning events and then doing nothing for the next 6 months, you need consistency to be a star. Random winners are fun but that does create stars.

Hopefully Gauff can keep it up, maybe she can start a rivalry with Iga?

Fernandez also looks promising, but injuries an in issue.

Regarding Emma, I don't understand why she annoys so many people, she is a teenager who never says anything to dodgy and seems harmless enough. She likes the sponsorship stuff, but from all accounts she is inundated with offers all the time and only picks some. Good for her tbh.

Watched a nice interview with Peniston seems like a sound bloke....but he is getting walloped currently alas.

Also not watched Tiafoe much but he is impressive here so far....excellent at chasing down and has a bit of a weird forehand

kontaveit out...no idea why she would have been second seed

Because she was world No.2 at the time of the draw, that's how Wimbledon seed their competitors.
