Reminds me of the travellers refusing houses as no stable for their horse. Beyond taking the piss. Would be great to have someone with balls in charge.

Why are they getting "offered" anything?

    This is an emergency

I absolutely agree but just to point out they are getting SWA as opposed to JSB seemingly along with child benefit etc.

i still think most people are giving the government a get out of jail free card when they write that the reason for all this is that the government are trying to virtue signal on the global stage

this prevents people from doing more in-depth analysis of the irish government's and the wider eu's stance.

this is not virtue signalling. it's a very planned influx.

Interesting points , I've long thought at a minimum is a convenient deflection based on what they initially thought was a high patience threshold of Irish people . I also don't believe anyone could have imagined what is going on is actually going on . Take aside people's genuine decency and compassion, how anyone can justify the shenanigans going on is utterly perplexing to me .

Fair enough I didnt know there was such a payment ! . But my point still stands that there is absolutely no need to hand anyone in hotels €200 plus their three meals a day

Absolutely and agree completely with your points , at a minimum some contributions should be made and you correctly point out, 1000's of folks on JSB ,illness and disability Pensions payments expected to pay their way with little or no additional entitlement to supports.

What particularly galls me is Governments latest absurd nonsense, telling people who are struggling to pop down to their nearest SW office for a few bob, they are so out of touch with reality, it's beggar's belief.

With other EU countries restricting or cutting benefits to Ukrainians the numbers here will further increase as time progresses. The Ukrainians already here will be telling those back home how handy they’re having it. Free everything with over 200 disposable income per week. The biggest piss take I have ever seen.

Honestly hard to know but it's obvious this war not ending anytime soon , its primarily the Ukranian economy collapse and essentially suspension of all government service there that will drive numbers up and I suppose the generous supports here.

I would imagine they have medical cards also and qualify for the special needs payment.

Also have to add: one thing a lot of people were throwing around at the start of the conflict was: "they're Europeans, they're like us". Well I know this sounds harsh but they really aren't, culturally speaking. I've been to Ukraine and it is extremely poor and corrupt. Getting around as a tourist even when you've done a bit of research and made the effort to learn a bit of the language is difficult - I found so many people unfriendly and rude bordering on aggressive. Strangers were viewed with mistrust and often hostility. There are many historical and cultural reasons for this and I could see that life was very hard so I wasn't unsympathetic. It was a shock though, to experience firsthand. So I wouldn't be so confident that they will fit into Ireland seamlessly and it's naive to think that they will. Just one example is the extremely heavy drinking I witnessed, widespread public drunkenness and acceptance of drink driving. If we are to welcome a large number of people to our country and shower them with generosity, might there not be some kind of introduction for Ukrainians in what is culturally acceptable here, what our norms and expectations are? I don't see any kind of two-way street at all and you could apply this to all the other groups we've allowed to settle here. It's a disaster in the making - almost like we're too insecure to even acknowledge that there is an "us" and that this is our country.

Having neighbors from Ukraine, all their family except old father recently joined them here as refugees. They have already started all doctors check ups with medical card they could not afford at Ukraine. As they ve said, Ireland feels as a resort to them. Nice!!!

Interesting you say resort. Map suggests last resort, but for so many not nearly..

I said this back along and there were some hopped on me and said, why not, they deserve it, there running from a war, and they should get free haircuts and gym memberships too.

Ukrainians in hotels, rooms, hostels or halls, where meals and utilities are provided should not get social welfare or childrens allowance. They should get the same as those in DP which is still plenty, seeing as there are no outgoings.

Sweet merciful Jesus, that will be some culture shock for the Irish alright.

Genuine question, how many Refugees are currently in College and third level accommodations and are they going to be removed to make way for students? Are there any fiqured out there of where the 35000 have been placed?

Resort in the meaning as if you go to Spain. Fresh air, quality foods, medicine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,707 ✭✭✭Bobblehats

I’m not questioning one’s resortful nature in the slightest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,349 ✭✭✭airy fairy

No idea how many. And no idea how they are going to be removed from student accomodation in Sept. It wouldn't surprise me as if they'll put students back online so they can keep them away from accomodation.

My understanding is that they’re only there for the summer. However, I don’t know what will happen come September/October when colleges reopen -Sunday business post today is saying the following:

    1. 26,000 of the 36,000 Ukrainians currently here NEED accommodation (hence the change in 2 “options” only in terms of offers to them)
    2. up to 1000 Ukrainians arriving in Ireland every week
    3. some hotel contracts ending over coming weeks meaning 3,400 Ukrainians will also have to be re homed who are currently residing in these hotels
    4. Around 1,300 Ukrainians currently with pledged accommodation- aim is to get this to 6000 by end of July

i don’t think we’ve seen anything like the worst yet- if colleges give back accommodation to students, if hotels go back to being hotels, where do they go?

Middle ireland won't take kindly to having their kids displaced by refugees especially when they have studied hard to get to third level and want to experience the college life. Why should they have to jeopardise their place in university to make way for a refugee fleeing conflict? Will the government put these students in hotels if they cannot find a room to rent? They should give then 200 quid a week aswell, just so that they are treated as well as the refugees. This whole thing is really starting to boil my piss. Enough is enough!!

I'm not sure how many in 3rd level education, I'd assume it's relatively small but government planning, I believe for up to 3,000 to continue education (That's bound to increase by next academic year)

I'm not sure if Student accommodation has been used yet, it's planned, but it will prove a nightmare to remove people once in situ , if the vast majority of pledged houses are not suitable, how student accommodation is, remains a mystery. I can see serious problems next September and October when already enrolled students come looking for accommodation, it's going to be a worse mess than it is now.

Another terrific contribution from ‘Boggles’. I’ve also been to the Ukraine and there issues with alcoholism there, on a scale unimaginable here.

Do you know people who routinely drink and drive? It’s become pretty taboo here in recent times.

Just looking at your ‘contributions’ to this thread, what exactly are you trying to achieve? You don’t seem to have any point to make, with exception of calling other posters liars. Well done you..

It's all about driving up housing demand and driving down wages.

Whenever you hear the word "solidarity", you know it's going to be all about what a upper middle class clique want and benefit from.

A passport is not “necessary for opening a bank accout”.

They have no other photographic identification.

Yes they are already in student accommodation with more student accommodation to be filled over the coming weeks according to this article

    UCC has also started this

“The college has also created a Sanctuary Fellowship Scheme, the first of its kind in Ireland’s higher education sector.

The scheme allows for scholars and staff members from universities, and other third level institutes outside of Ireland, who are at risk because of conflict or other serious human rights violations to apply for a six-month fellowship in UCC.

“Under the fellowship, UCC will provide six fellows a support package including a start-up grant and a monthly salary for six months,” a UCC spokesperson said.”

They might want to start up a fellow for Irish students who will have to sleep in a car September. Some already were before this.

Passport, driving licence, national Ukrainian ID card are all valid. Failing that an ML10 form signed by a garda.

The rules are to change because the Government is under serious pressure to find housing for over 26,000 people who are already here. Some had turned down multiple offers when they arrived in the hopes of receiving another closer to friends, relatives or job opportunities. The Business Post reports the new protocol will put people to the back of the queue if they turn down an offer.

Why are they even getting 2 offers? Take what’s offered the first time or straight back on a plane Ukraine. So ungrateful, are they refugees or VIPs?
