Social Housing

Not only have we not built enough, a lot of councils around the country sold off their council houses over the years to long term tenants for next to nothing and didn't replace the stock. So houses were sold off and never replaced. Crazy situation.

DCC wait times are average 10 years I believe.

wouldnt be surprised if its more, we re effectively years behind the curve in regards supply, we re in deep trouble

I realise this isn't a very typical situation but a one of my friends has an autistic son,he is very lucky in that he has Hse funding for staff and 24/7 care.They applied for a social house for him in April 2019 and keys of new build 2 bedroom house were handed over 8 months later.

As I said I guess this isn't a very typical situation but is my only first hand knowledge of social housing. The other houses in the development are made up of single mothers and the bigger houses went to bigger families.

Yes,this worked out really well for everybody involved and I'm delighted to see my tax dollars being used in a situation like this.

Friend of mine got one recently in Cork, 12 years waiting. Here's the problem with the system though, 12 years ago when he went on it his income qualified, 12 years later he's far in excess and still qualifies. It's all messed up, the level of rent, a house for life.

again, its not, yes this money should be paid by renters, but welfare would more than likely need to be increased to do so, and this money possible taken from source, again, most citizens pay taxes, including welfare recipients, so not free! the appropriate term is 'subsidised' or in some of these cases 'heavily subsidised'!

Longer now in DCC/SDCC and even longer again in Fingal. Some of the families I work with have been on the list over 13/14 years. It’s not a case of turn up to the council and be handed keys.

If you don't pay rent, you are getting a free house.

If you don't work or earn, you are getting a free house.

It really is that clear.

I'd rather see working people on lower incomes be put at the top of the queue for social housing rather than the current deadbeats.
