after years of neglecting the whole tourism sector in regards labor, it falls to sh1t after a pandemic, who would have thought!

Toilets being cleaned should be a basic thing. Not doing that is disgusting

This is the problem now for people travelling, how do you know when to turn up because you don't know if you will be caught in a sh1t show like at the weekend. I am travelling to the states in a couple of weeks and usually would be checking in 3hrs before the flight but after the scenes at the weekend will be going at least 5hrs before the flight, unless the DAA can guarantee that people turning up on time for flights will get on those flights.

Did they have less people working on Sunday because the DAA didn't want to pay the Sunday rates?

See if it's possible to check you luggage in the day before, which would save you time when you turn up for your flights, and just have to go through security.

They were all at home with hangovers after being in the pub for 8 hours on Saturday watching sport.

I thought checking in luggage the day before was only for early morning flights, my flight will be leaving at 3pm. But I will check it out.

exactly, this moron Philips got DAA CEO job because hes one of 'the mates', same HSE and so on.... showers of w4nkers without proper education and experience running (read: ruining) this country, everything is on free-fall and best what they can do is 'apologising' ... seriously, I'm sick of this sh1t

Can anyone tell me if there is any wheelchair or even seating assistance if the queue is bad outside?

My parents are travelling on Monday and my father is over hip and knee surgery, if its hours of queuing he is going to need to sit down!

Also, when inside, is fast track needed? I think I heard security gates move quickly?

on the same trolley here: flying out on Saturday morning at 8.50 to catch connecting flight in Paris, bags check-in opens 3 hours earlier so 5.50. My plan is to be at the terminal (T1) no later than 3.00 ... I know that arriving too early, as per DAA PR is a 'part of the problem' but screw that, its my first proper holidays in 3 years so dont want to risk being late, I'm and my better half are stressed to the bits (shes worse due to being treated for severe anxiety) so you can just imagine where we are mentally now, whos going to reimburse it? fcuking DAA or cabbage man Ryan?

Yep - although I have yet to see any politician criticising "the wurkers" for that. Thing is, there's not much that the employer can do to the malingerers either; discipline them for not showing up and they're likely to resign and make the problem even worse.

The idea that two gobshites like Ryan and Naughton can improve things by having a daily round of "robust discussions" with DAA management is utter nonsense. They'd be far better off putting on yellow jackets and helping to man the security checkpoints.

So are we looking at weeks or months of carnage here? Possibly need to fly from dublin in a few weeks for work, no interest in navigating that mess though.

from what I've heard, any form of assistance doesnt apply to Qs outside, there were alot of people saying that they've had wheelchairs booked but didnt get it for outside. In regards to fast0track, DAA doesnt sell it anymore

    thanks, that's what I thought.

Didnt realise fast track was gone but I assume pointless these days anyway!

I'm flying to New York with United in a few weeks. The flight is at 9.20am on a Saturday. United only open their desks at 6.20am and we have to check bags, get through security and then through US pre-clearance. It seems very tight to me and there's no option to check bags the night before.

things not much better in the UK it seems

I always thought it was a massive privilege to be flying anywhere as only a small percentage of the world will ever have the opportunity or money to get on a plane, and given the pollution it causes I can see why air travel gets stick over it. And we're the first generations to be able to jet off with kids etc every year for a sun holiday. I will be in London for the foreseeable and have the Rail and Sail option to Dublin which I've used a good few times and is actually quite pleasant, also took the Eurostar to Paris a few weeks ago which was amazing.

I'd love to see more ferries to Spain and France from Ireland, currently you can't even get on the one that goes to Spain if you're not driving a car, and for someone who doesn't own a car that's not really much use!

That's great in theory, but the ferry companies are never going to be in a position to compete with the likes of Ryanair on price, which is driving (pardon the pun) the volume of air traffic.

Punitive taxes would help, but what government is going to do that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,514 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

They'll never be able to compete, but hopefully I'll be in a position where I can take a few weeks off every summer and use rail to visit places in Europe. Rail is really fast and efficient in Spain and France from my experience. So this kind of travel may suit some people, thus freeing up airports for others.

If Gov are serious about climate change both here and in the UK, they should be upgrading the connections between Ireland and UK/France by ferry, it can get a bit messy changing at Holyhead, trains leaving before ferry docks etc.

I can't see cheap flights going anywhere any time soon, but I just hate airports and after seeing the recent carry on in Dublin and around Europe I hope I can steer clear of them for as long as possible!

I'm with you about the hassle of airports.

We go to Spain every year, and because of the high cost of car hire, I looked at taking the ferry, but it just wasn't feasible for two weeks.

Two days to get there, and two days to get back. €1,100 return, + all the fuel costs just made if impossible.

I came over here a couple of weeks ago for 55 euro from Dublin Port, which isn't far from my folks house, Ferry left at 0730 and I got to Euston at 1430, jumped on a Boris bike and I'm in the flat in 25 minutes. Lovely way to travel.

goverment should take over the airport and get the army to do all the things could even get the airforce to help out people need refunds as well for there missed flights and holidays goverment needs to do more

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,514 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

why should the army be involved? what has it to do with them?

would it not be easier to ask people who don't actually need to fly to just stay at home instead of going on their city break or their sun holiday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 296 ✭✭Ham_Sandwich

people have a right to go on holiday why should they stay here the weather is terrible?? the army should be used because the goverment is sitting around doing nothing they should be trying to solve this and help the people left out over it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,514 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

lol, getting the army involved because you have to queue to go on holidays. Check your privilege!

I think the calls for the army is ridiculous yes, it was mostly one day where things got completely out of hand, bringing in the army because 1000 people missed flights is way OTT in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,503 ✭✭✭howiya

I don't agree with bringing in the army but telling people not to go on their holidays is equally ridiculous.

tbh I dont think that its a bad idea, army helped on numerous occasions in the past and now its a real crisis, we're a worlds laughing stock already
