Well done Seamus Power. Watched the first 2 days but didn't watch it this evening. When Rory started dropping shots I said I'd leave it. And since then the wheels have well and truly fallen off, 6 shots dropped in 12 holes. Will tune in tomorrow evening, Seamus might be even closer if some of the others get jittery towards the end of their 3rd round.

Fantastic by Seamus today, joint second best round of the day. 71-69-67, would be nice to keep the sequence going with a 65 tomorrow!

He’s put himself in a great position to have a high finish in his second major and also consolidate his place in the top 50. Two majors and two very very good performances will have shown him that he truly belongs at this level if he had any self doubts at all. He can go out today and play his own game without any undue pressure as he surely has exceeded his own baseline expectations for the week, and everything else is gravy now.

It’s not an easy thing to keep yourself in the upper reaches of the rankings. Look at Victor Perez as just the most recent example of how quickly you can fall away so it’s great to see.

thats tough ,double on 2nd hole .in water. All the expectation and then that, should really have made the bogey putt ,anyway needs to knuckle down and play for high position, unless leaders have meltdowns

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭Panrich

The putter seems to have gone very cold. Missed a birdies chance from less than 10 ft at 9 followed by a 3-putt at 10 from inside 25ft.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,427 ✭✭✭dublin49

pity he didnt get anything going as 3 or 4 under might have got it done

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

A number of players will be kicking themselves after today, none moreso than Seamus I would think. Conditions for him were perfect to follow up yesterday but look it, major pressure is something he hasn’t dealt with before and he put together a decent round after the fiasco on the 2nd hole. A top 10 in what could prove to be the most difficult major they’ll play this year is some achievement. Well done and that should prove to everyone he’s more than capable in these big boy events.

40th in the World Rankings now

Another great milestone for Seamus, a top 10 finish in a major. Even though his putter wasn't on form in the end he only finished 4 shots behind the winner. If he had any doubts about his right to be at the top table those doubts should be well and truly gone at this stage. As Motivator said so many players will be kicking themselves this morning. So many of them could have posted that score if they had been less aggressive but then nobody really expected Perreira to collapse the way he did. Its so hard to win a major and those final 9 holes sort out the men form the boys, both in playing ability and mental strength. Happy that Thomas won, his putter wasn't on fire over the last 2 days but the rest of his game was very solid. Zalatoris's putting definitely cost him that major.

Top 12 finishers including ties qualify automatically for next year’s Masters.

It's top 12 finishers in the Masters that qualify for the following year's Masters.

Only top 4 plus ties from US Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship get automatic exemptions for next year's Masters.

Top 15 plus ties in the PGA earns automatic entry into next year's PGA Championship

How much did he earn for the weekend?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

$400,000. Up to 40th in the world and up to 22nd in the FedEx Cup.

I think his trip home to Mt Juliet will be right up his alley, it’s a real ball strikers course and he could go very well. I’d say he’d rank an Irish Open win as high if not higher than his Barbasol win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,491 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

$400K was for solo 9th. Seamus was tied for 9th with three others so this pot would have been combined and split four ways ..

    9th: $400,000

    10th: $371,250

    11th: $343,750

    12th: $316,250

all four would have picked up a cheque for $357,813. Rory got $436,600 for solo 8th.

Sorry, you're right. My brain was clearly muddled after a late night,

Power just outside top 20 and doing well so far today. Making the cut is looking good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭mitchelsontour

Looks like Seamus is well inside the cut with +1 after 36 holes. Currently 4 off the lead with the afternoon tee times to come.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭Panrich

It will either be Justin Thomas or Dustin Johnson to play with tomorrow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

Finally a big draw for Seamus in a big event by getting paired with Justin Thomas. Aside from Scheffler in the matchplay and Dustin Johnson in the Players back in March this is his biggest playing partner in terms of stature in the game.

Another top quality performance so far. in 10 rounds in Majors I believe he’s had just one double bogey - that is phenomenal scoring when you look at the three events and three courses he’s played, all courses he’s played competitively for the first time as well. A top 20 this week would be some return and who knows if he strings a few good holes together aim higher. Playing with JT should help him as well.

He’s going to be a hard man to stop in the Irish open also, the Mt Juliet course will suit him down to the ground.

Fair play to him, to make the cut in his first three majors is a serious achievement, especially given the quality of those courses. Didn't realise that he has only had one double bogey in his ten rounds, great shooting, hopefully we don't put the mockers on him now. Agree with Motivator I think he will be a serious contender at Mount Juliet. Fingers crossed he puts himself into the mix after today's round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭Scrabbel

Great eagle on 8th! Under par for the day is going very well in that wind. Only 8 people under par currently.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭Panrich

Disappointing bogey on the easiest hole on the course today (14) from the middle of the fairway. He is still right in contention if he can pick up a birdie or two on the way in. Great display so far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

Frustrating final few holes for Seamus. He probably needed to get in at -1 to really be in the thick of things tomorrow. At the moment there’s probably too many players in front of him but you never know what could happen if he gets off to a good start tomorrow. The weather is meant to be cooler and windier according to Sky Sports.

He’s making some impressions in Majors. If he can finish well here tomorrow what a year it’ll have been already for him and you’d have to think St Andrews will suit him for the Open. I think the Irish open is the one he really wants to win and the Open is real bonus territory for him but he’s good enough so why not?

  • Registered Users Posts: 710 ✭✭✭Lad GAGA

Pity that he bogeyed what we were told were two of the easiest holes on the course but all in all a very impressive round, especially when you look at some of the scores posted by some of the big names. He did well to steady the ship after his bogey on the second, but the fact that he beat Thomas by two shots and, again, no double bogeys are big positives. I wouldn't be at all surprised if something like 3 under wins this. Don't think he'll do it but another top ten finish would be brilliant and he's on course for that but I think even par today would be a huge score for him.

Nice bit of Seamus on YouTube highlights, quite the Stenson look about him

I think he might have gone a little bit conservative after getting to -1 on 13. He laid up at 14 from the fairway and again on 17 where he found the second cut with his tee shot that was going for position. He bogeyed both of these holes but who knows, he may have got worse had he gone for it and as someone said, no double-bogeys so far.

Birdie to start and the lowest man playing right now. Should get some TV time for a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,430 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Starts the round with a birdie. 20ish foot putt for two in a row.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,461 ✭✭✭boardise

As he starts the final round he finds himself in 11th place. Heady stuff. Par or one under would be great today and ensure a healthy payday.

Starts with a birdie and is into the top ten.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,776 ✭✭✭abff

Finished with a level par 70 for a total of 1 over. Definitely showing that he belongs at this level. Currently tied 12th.

Some performance, he has come a long way fast.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,840 ✭✭✭Panrich

I reckon that's another 11.5 ranking points in the bag.

  • Registered Users Posts: 710 ✭✭✭Lad GAGA

Another great week for Seamus, brilliant to see, no double bogeys all week (was he the only one??), roll on Mount Juliet

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

12 rounds in Majors and no double bogeys. That is unbelievable especially considering he’s only ever played 12 rounds! T-27, t-9 and t-12 is some going and a great achievement. If anyone ever doubted his ability then they certainly can’t doubt him now. I was probably his biggest critic in terms of his mental errors over the years but he has really shown how mentally strong he’s gotten in the last 12-18 months. More fedex points, world ranking points and of course a nice big cheque headed his way again.

If mentioned it already but I think Mt Juliet could be a special few days for him. The course is very American in style and should suit his eye considering it’s similar in style to courses on the PGA Tour they he has played very well at. I certainly wouldn’t rule out a big showing at St Andrews either, although hugely different to Mt Juliet for obvious reasons, I can see it suiting Seamus.

Anyway back to the present, a great US Open and onwards and upwards for Power. He looks very much at home on the big stage now and I think even his biggest fans over the years didn’t expect this to become normal but here we are.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

Seamus up to number 36 in the world. Fantastic achievement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭big_drive

Where will he go in world rankings after the weekend?

Edit: I just see it's 36 , brilliant progression for Power. Look forward to seeing him up close at Irish open

That lack of double bogeys is most impressive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Especially considering he was throwing in double bogies for fun anytime he got in contention when we were all watching him on shot tracker a couple of seasons ago!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,427 ✭✭✭dublin49

true, the perception I had before his break through was he often set himself up for good finish and then had his worst round on the Sunday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭billy3sheets

But, is he playing it too safe? Does he need to take more risks and therefore have more blowups and double bogies? Maybe that's why Rory wins sometimes but has collapses regularly 🤔

I think S Amy's has a real shot this week, course really suits him I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,427 ✭✭✭dublin49

just looking thru shot tracker and on his back nine he got up and down from 40 to 80 yards 4 times to make par, pretty impressive stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭billy3sheets

Finished on -3 for T15. Another solid performance, no doubles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭OEP

Is he skipping the Scottish Open? It'll be a lot of golf for him in the run up to The Open otherwise. And being back in Ireland I'm sure he'll have other commitments.

    Off to a flier!

-5 for his round today, and tied 6th overall. What a remarkable story it is. Now up at the business end of the leaderboard in almost every tournament he plays in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,781 ✭✭✭Motivator

Since the travellers in 2021, Power’s form looks like this:

    1 win, 8 top 10’s, 14 top 15’s. Top 30 in all 3 majors.

    UNBELIEVABLE.

Might be paired up with McIlroy tomorrow the way things are going for Rory.

Seamus looks cool as a breeze and has laid a good foundation with a pair of 68s. Putting working well so he's poised to make a realistic challenge for the title.
