Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Right so you narrowed it down to iPhone. Makes sense as I cannot replicate that issue on my Android 11 phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,188 ✭✭✭smuggler.ie

yeah, no more image only posts....

BTW, cannot reduce or float img , "tool" just blink, wont allow to select. Only options that work to add name and delete.

This is driving me nuts. How on earth did no one test on an iPhone before releasing. I’ve abandoned a few half written posts due to the random scroll jump. I think it’s related to the ads changing.

Have you tried other browsers like Chrome or Firefox? Safari is the new internet explorer in terms of development.

Funnily enough if you’re adblocker is working it doesn’t jump about…

It needs at least two chatacters. This used to happen after migration, but they had it fixed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,513 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

their fix caused a different issue where a post would have another empty post after it.

Hold alt and type 0160 twice.

great workaround - only 5 extra buttons, but what can you do ....

Down to the endless to-fix list i guess

Finally my Worms 2 keyboard fúckery to put spaces in my name was useful.

Actually even err message is not right or whole thing is not right.

Attempt to post empty return "Body is 1 character too short." , where in fact it requires two . Originally it was one chracter requirement if not mistaking

I had to do it twice for it to work. As in two separate characters. Maybe release alt between.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,188 ✭✭✭smuggler.ie

This is exact waht i am pointing at - two characters required, despite err statment and compare to setting that was there months ago

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,986 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Does the same in Chrome on iPhone. Looks like ads are rettiggering the anchor link, or reloading the page.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,141 ✭✭✭✭Caranica

Hi @Boards.ie: Niamh I reported this a few weeks ago on the other thread but wrong threads opening is still a problem (I'm on Chrome for Android). This morning I tapped on a thread from the followed forums list (think it was travel) and a thread in A&P (or maybe state benefits - which I don't follow) opened. Unfortunately I just clicked out of it too quickly to see which.

That thread was not on the list of threads so it's not a case of the screen jumping while ads are loading.

Yeah I've noticed that with the quote button as well

It used to say one character, but it needed two or three depending on where you were posting.

I can't type on boards using a mobile anymore. On longer theads it keeps jumping all over the place. It's absolutely frustrating to the point I've given up on some posts.

Happening using the latest version of safari on iOS.

    Hi Caranica,

Sorry to hear that this is still happening, it sounds very infuriating. Is it happening all of the time or at random times? Is it always from the same place, e.g. always on the Bookmarked threads page or on the Homepage with 'View: All' or 'View: Following' selected? I'm assuming the Homepage 'View: Following' is the Followed Forums list of threads you mean but let me know if it's one of the others, I'm just trying to narrow it down. A screen record of it happening would be very helpful if possible, I'm not able to replicate it here also Chrome on Android.

The issue of the page jumping up and adown is being looked at at the moment, I'll update here when there is something updated or fixed.

The 'body is too short' issue - I had the minimum character limit set at 1 - this was to allow image only posts and not allow blank posts. However blank posts were slipping through more recently. There is a bug that was allowing them to be posted despite the character limit. I've been advised to increase the limit to 2 characters while the bug is being investigated so this is why image only posts are saying 'too short'. It shouldn't be like this permanently, just for now til the bug is worked out.

Odd bug, but no matter how many times i remove a comment i made it keeps appearing in the text box when i come back to the thread

You can delete any saved posts by clicking on ‘My Drafts’ (bottom of the page on mobile, not sure about desktop) & clicking the little x beside each saved item. It’s a pain in the butt if there’s a bunch to delete!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,530 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

On desktop, click on your profile icon, and "Drafts" in the drop down menu - they'll all be listed there and you can delete them one at a time.

Hi @Boards.ie: Niamh flagging this one again but with a slight bit more to include mobile

Clock is an hour behind. Well it is for me anyway. Things just posted are saying they're posted at 5:37 etc.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

The forum list menu when moving a thread has a display issue. In the Networking and Broadband section, the Open Source forum appears as a sub forum of it, which it isn't, and then lists the actual sub forums, broadband etc, as subforums of Open Source.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,030 ✭✭✭Slideways

The “Best of” link at the bottom of

the page. I’m sure it used to give a list of threads it recommended. Now there is nothing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,453 ✭✭✭sam t smith

This ‘jumping’ is ridiculous at this stage.

I was typing a post a few minutes ago and it jumped at least three times while I was typing. I ended up on Twitter twice as it moved me to an embedded tweet further up the page which I inadvertently clicked on as I was typing my message.

This jumping is wrecking my head, how did Boards.ie make such a complete **** up of this site?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Get a Oneplus 6 and run it on Android 11. That's what I have and I never had any issues with jumping. I remember reading this thread and wondering what everyone was on about. It has also been found out that the issue is with iphones.

Thanks, but I’m not buying a new phone just to use boards, if they can’t provide a site that can be used on iPhones, the site developers need a kick in the arse.

Have you tried other browsers on iPhone? I'm on Android and don't really have these issues. Some bouncing but not egregious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,380 ✭✭✭Deub

And refreshing the page is not a solution as it automatically moves you the first post on the next page.

Is this a new one - comment on Nature forum, doesn't show up on latest posts?

  • A little out of date from 2016, but demonstrates that there have been known issues re scroll bouncing on iOS. Boards owner doesn’t seem to be that interested in investing in trying to fix it.

I've had this on desktop - posted in the Aviation/Aircraft forum, and for some reason that forum doesn't show on the main page.

It does, however, appear on the "Discussions" page, which appears to be a more complete listing of threads (as pointed out by a few very helpful posters - how you're supposed to find that out by yourself I do not know)

Why the difference, and why the main page that is under the main header/banner of the whole forum doesn't contain the full listing of threads/forums, is completely beyond me.

  • I see for some people clock is behind, some not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,030 ✭✭✭Slideways

    Just for info.

I use an iPhone and safari and have zero jumping. Maybe cause I use adblock plus?

For those who are afflicted with it, they might try that solution..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,530 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Please, please, PLEASE can you fix the text box for reporting posts?

You have to type completely blind, and if you make a mistake it's nigh on impossible to locate the cursor to correct it.

    It drives me completely nuts.

Unless, of course, you don't want people reporting dodgy posts?? Nothing would surprise me any more.....

It just gets worse. Two handshake failures in the last 10 minutes crashing pages while simply writing a message.

Errors like that should be handled properly by Vanilla

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85,049 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I’ve been having an issue for weeks+ browsing boards via iOS safari. Depending on where you load into a page from (eg. Post 3 of 40 say is your latest unread post) well every 30-60 seconds, the web ad on the page changes. This triggers some kind of refresh that puts you smack back on that 3rd post. Trying to read the next 37 posts on the page might take you 5, 10, or 15 attempts to scroll down to the post you were reading when the advertisement flipped to eventually read it all. Closing the ads doesn’t improve the experience. I don’t know of a workaround other than to not browse boards on iOS which doesn’t seem like the intention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,530 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Install an ad blocker. I don't use an iphone, but from posts I've seen that seems to correct the issue.

I held out for a long time on mobile, appreciating that ad revenue is what's keeping the lights on - but even I caved eventually. The sheer number of ads, the types of ads, and the disfunctionality they impose on the site tipped me over the edge.

Management seem to be their own worst enemies in this case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,009 ✭✭✭colly10

Would prefer not to try an adblocker but using safari on IOS and having the page regularly jumping makes reading threads very difficult.

Is there any plans to fix it? I haven’t seen mention of a planned fix but haven’t read through much of the thread for obvious reasons

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,464 ✭✭✭rodge123

It’s been reported over a month ago at this stage and seems to have gone into a black hole. Do they even have a developer to fix bugs? Surely this would be a very high priority, it’s extremely bad UX affecting potentiallly a lot of users I’d imagine.

There isn't a dedicated developer as far as I know. My understanding is that changes have to accepted by the Vanilla Team anyway and then applied to the Vanilla system which powers all of the sites they manage. That's why they can't just change the time zone. If Canada and their main customers don't have day light savings, then they can't change it for everyone.

I would imagine the Vanilla success stories are websites running the software themselves instead of paying for the service. It's free to take this approach and you instead need a developer and pay for server costs.
