    Joe McDonagh Cup (Antrim,Carlow,Down,Kerry,Meath,Offaly)

    The Joe McDonagh Cup shall have Six Teams in its Championship and shall be played on a Round-Robin basis. 

    The counties who finish in the top two places shall qualify for the final. Both teams qualify for the All Ireland Preliminary Round (3rd Munster Round Robin vs Joe Mcdonagh Cup Winners, 3rd Leinster Round Robin vs Joe Mcdonagh cup Runners Up)

    The winner of the final if a non-Munster team, shall be promoted to the Leinster Championship for 2023. If Kerry wins the Joe McDonagh Cup, it shall playoff against the bottom team in the Munster Championship “Round Robin” at a neutral Munster Venue The Winner of that playoff game shall be relegated to the Joe McDonagh Cup for 2023. In that circumstance, the bottom team in the Leinster Championship “Round Robin” shall not be Relegated.

    The bottom-placed team in the “Round-Robin” shall be relegated to the Christy Ring Cup for 2023

    Kerry v Down

    Antrim v Offaly

    Round 2 (23rd/24th April)

    Carlow v Kerry

    Offaly v Meath

    Down vs Antrim

    Kerry, after two final appearances, might miss out this year. Division 1 hurling will stand to Antrim and Offaly, while Down are on an upward trajectory.

    Kildare and Derry are the teams to beat.

    Should the McDonagh Cup be classified as a lower Tier championship when the winners have a route to McCarthy glory? Possibly being a Tier 1B is more accurate?

    No harm in that - would probably need a rebranding to an extent then though as most people associate the Joe McDonagh as a ‘rest of the pack’ competition and bunch it with the Ring, Rackard and Meagher really

    We have the Munster Championship and the Leinster Championship. The National Championship (McDonagh Cup)?

    Other lower tier options;

    Premier Conference (Ring)

    Conference 1 (Rackard)

    Conference 2 (Meagher)

    These names or something like these are reflective of the respective levels.

    Down had a good league. Only fine margins kept them out of the final last year. Down v Antrim will be a good gauge of where both of those counties are at.

    Shane Nolan retiring after being dropped wasn't the best build up for a Kerry team who were placed on the backfoot by Down from throw in.

    There are conflicting reports. The manager said he retired after being dropped. Shane has come out and said he has retired for family and business reasons.

    Leinster Tier 3 would suit Kerry. I think they should keep taking their lessons from the Munster minor championship and stick with it.

    Antrim looking the best of them so far, I thought Kerry were out of it after their home loss but another huge win today so maybe not....

    Kerry vs Offaly on the 14th May could be a huge match in the battle for 2nd place. Antrim host Kerry in the last round and possibly line out with a B team

    Dunno what the story behind it but a huge number of our best players aren't making themselves available this season. And two McGowans from Ratoath are on the football panel and would likely be starters for the hurlers. We'd likely struggle to even make the final of the Christy Ring the way we've been this year so far. The only reason we beat Kildare in the league was because Kildare were without their Naas players.

    It's a shame that we've utterly failed to build on our initial Christy Ring success in 2016. We gave a half decent account of ourselves the following year but have gradually slipped back year on year while seeing the likes of Kildare and Down overtake us. Since the 2016 Christy Ring success, we've beaten Kerry in 2017 and 2021. While we've had narrow losses against the likes of Westmeath, Carlow, Offaly etc., we've had no other wins against stronger sides in either league or championship. The wins we've gotten have been against sides you'd expect us to be beating with ease (e.g. London, Mayo, Wicklow etc.). It's a very frustrating state of affairs.

    Antrim are the favourites in this tournament. Offaly, after a season in Division 1, will be favourites against Kerry. Kerry v Offaly will be a semi-final of sorts but Down are currently in the mix also.
