Kerry, after two final appearances, might miss out this year. Division 1 hurling will stand to Antrim and Offaly, while Down are on an upward trajectory.

London are the first team to win in the 2022 championship

Beat Sligo 0-26-0-21 in Round 1 of the Christy Ring Cup

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

Kildare and Derry are the teams to beat.

Should the McDonagh Cup be classified as a lower Tier championship when the winners have a route to McCarthy glory? Possibly being a Tier 1B is more accurate?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

No harm in that - would probably need a rebranding to an extent then though as most people associate the Joe McDonagh as a ‘rest of the pack’ competition and bunch it with the Ring, Rackard and Meagher really

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

We have the Munster Championship and the Leinster Championship. The National Championship (McDonagh Cup)?

    Other lower tier options;

    Premier Conference (Ring)

    Conference 1 (Rackard)

    Conference 2 (Meagher)

These names or something like these are reflective of the respective levels.

Yeah massive result for Down, successfully thorough there first big challenge of the championship

Kerry under pressure now esp having big challenges ahead against Antrim, Offaly and Carlow

  • Registered Users Posts: 593 ✭✭✭supernova5

yea that is a savage result for Down, proving to be a resilient and consistent team

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,653 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

Massive win also for Antrim against offaly with a last minute goal from conor Johnson to win by a point.

Molumphy doesn’t seem to be able to get the Kerry lads up to the same level as other managers.

Down had a good league. Only fine margins kept them out of the final last year. Down v Antrim will be a good gauge of where both of those counties are at.

Shane Nolan retiring after being dropped wasn't the best build up for a Kerry team who were placed on the backfoot by Down from throw in.

Retired after being dropped for the game really? Bit OTT.

There are conflicting reports. The manager said he retired after being dropped. Shane has come out and said he has retired for family and business reasons.

The GAA really need to move Kerry to a Minor B competition or something. 3 hammerings for them in the Munster Championship this year

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,358 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

And in a few years time everyone will say they need to be playing the big teams to progress and then they will get hammered and everyone will say the GAA really need to move Kerry to a Minor B and after a few years time everyone will say they need to be playing the big teams to progress and then they will get hammered and everyone will say the GAA really need to move Kerry to a Minor B

Leinster Tier 3 would suit Kerry. I think they should keep taking their lessons from the Munster minor championship and stick with it.

Nice comeback from Antrim, carlow looked to have them in bother early on, great spirit in the team. Seem to be a cut above the rest so far.

Yeah and they look like they could win it out. 3rd team in Munster will have to travel up there for the All Ireland Preliminary Round if thats the case

Looking like Antrim have made the final and the battle for 2nd place will be very interesting

Antrim looking the best of them so far, I thought Kerry were out of it after their home loss but another huge win today so maybe not....

Kerry vs Offaly on the 14th May could be a huge match in the battle for 2nd place. Antrim host Kerry in the last round and possibly line out with a B team

Down also very much still in it

Meath gone backwards, hopefully Kildare will be more competitive when they come up.

Antrim not 100% sure of final place just yet, I fancy Kerry get to the final

Dunno what the story behind it but a huge number of our best players aren't making themselves available this season. And two McGowans from Ratoath are on the football panel and would likely be starters for the hurlers. We'd likely struggle to even make the final of the Christy Ring the way we've been this year so far. The only reason we beat Kildare in the league was because Kildare were without their Naas players.

It's a shame that we've utterly failed to build on our initial Christy Ring success in 2016. We gave a half decent account of ourselves the following year but have gradually slipped back year on year while seeing the likes of Kildare and Down overtake us. Since the 2016 Christy Ring success, we've beaten Kerry in 2017 and 2021. While we've had narrow losses against the likes of Westmeath, Carlow, Offaly etc., we've had no other wins against stronger sides in either league or championship. The wins we've gotten have been against sides you'd expect us to be beating with ease (e.g. London, Mayo, Wicklow etc.). It's a very frustrating state of affairs.

Were very thankful down in Waterford for Jack Fagan

Antrim are the favourites in this tournament. Offaly, after a season in Division 1, will be favourites against Kerry. Kerry v Offaly will be a semi-final of sorts but Down are currently in the mix also.

    Antrim first 3 league results:

Allianz Hurling League Division 1 Group B round 3

    At Corrigan Park

    Waterford 3-21

    Antrim 2-22

Allianz Hurling League Division 1 Group B round 2

    At Corrigan Park

    Dublin 2-19

    Antrim 2-15

Allianz Hurling League Division 1 Group B round 1

    At UPMC Nowlan Park

    Kilkenny 2-15

    Antrim 3-9

  • Registered Users Posts: 593 ✭✭✭supernova5

yea Antrim impressive in league for sure but wont count for a whole lot in latter stages of Joe Mac in one-off games

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,653 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

Antrim alot stronger at home, have been caught out on the road probably due to the distance involved.

Westmeath's Division 1 experience was very evident in last year's McDonagh final.
