Do speed vans take pictures of the driver?

Could I say that a named driver was driving the car when it was caught by a speed can and get away with it? Not saying I'm doing it but just in theory because I was done by a Garda with a speed gun and feel it might be unfair if people can get away with it with speed vans.

They do take photos. As to whether they perfectly capture the driver is another matter. If you get a ticket in the post, you can ask for the full photo.

Take your chances, and take your punishment, just like getting caught for speeding.

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time.

not saying it should be done but what what you are asking about is quite common I know from work a fair few foreign driver names were given in and i never heard of any follow up .Be warned it is against the law to do so obviously .I also wonder would asking for the picture would it make them think you were considering something fishy .

I have heard of it before but don't know whether it's just the reg that's taken or the whole front off the car. I've gotten m50 toll letters before and they take a pic of the whole front of the car but from an upper angle so the driver can't be seen.

There is no formal leeway and people have been done for being just over the speed limit. However, most gardai won't pursue anything close to the limit.

Also bear in mind that your speedo will probably be under-reading - your speedo was showing your speed at something higher than what you were caught at - difficult to argue your way out of that.

Doesn't matter anyhow as you be been done according to your first post.

I was doing 69 in a 60 zone when I was done by that Garda. I suppose my question was about the vans do they allow for leeway? I have noticed that the speedometer usually reads about 5 km above what a speed sign will read. Is that a common deviation in most cars?

Speedometers legally cannot under-read (saying that you are going slower than you actually are).*

There is no leeway. The vans take pictures of all cars exceeding the speed limit and to my knowledge these are all examined manually by a garda who makes the decision on which ones to pursue.

Anyhow, you've been done. Why are you trying to weasel out of it now? If you were afraid of a fine or points then you should have had a lighter right foot!

* I erroneously said earlier that your speed was "under-reading" whereas I should have said that it was over-reading

I was happy with your helpful advice before but now I sense a nasty tone. I am not trying to weasel out of it that was months ago I am just asking to compare the procedures with manual detections like a speed gun and automated detections like the vans. Does a person manually go through them and decide which ones to pursue? Taking into account time of day, following traffic behind a speeding car etc.

M50 cameras can show the driver.

If yiu have an account with them you can see the photos clearly showing whole car, not just the registration number

The vans are not set up to capture an image of the driver of the vehicle. The function of the camera is primarily to capture the registration number of the vehicle.

Considering a 'speed van' can monitor five lanes of traffic, including the opposite side of a dual carriageway (provided there's no barrier obstructing it's view) I'd say it's safe to bet the full image would be enough to include the whole vehicle, including driver if driving towards the camera.

It's very dangerous to be attempting 69 while driving. And in a 60 zone no less. How did you manage to see here you were going?

They can capture the driver, it depends on the angle, and the time of day. If it’s dark outside, you’ll probably be grand. But if it’s broad daylight, you could be f*cked. Email them, request the photo, then decide your next move based on that. If you want to know more, PM me.

Speed detection vans capture the image of every vehicle that passes.

Doesn't matter whether it's 40kmh or 140kmh.

The image they send you is a zoomed image of the number plate.

The image they have is a full image of the vehicle.

In the UK you can be caught on the phone by speed cameras.

Yes do it all time in transport companies I work in irish never get caught speeding always the Romanian man (irish driver usually give him 100 for troubles
