    Did anybody else read the gov.ie 2022-2025 Electric Vehicle Infrastructure plan? Apparently the current public charging infrastructure will be enough for a few more years.

    It will be an absolute bloodbath at the SuC sites unless there are plans by Tesla to very quickly build few hundred more chargers before opening the network. Government won't do anything as apparently there is just perception amongst the non-BEV driving public that there are not enough public charging points in Ireland while the reality is that the is capacity to spare for next couple of years and sufficient number of charging points to keep us going until 2025.

    Calling Ionity, Applegreen, Circle K. Please save us all.

    Tesla just need to have an 8 stall supercharger site on each and every motorway in the country and they have a good few covered but the M9, M11 and the Northwest need them badly so please get the finger out Tesla and just build them....

    I see Elon tweeted that a ChadeMo to CCS adapter will be available in "2 weeks" to enable Leaf etc use the public superchargers.

    Wasn't really a complaint was it? :) Or the complaint was about the speed at which they open the network? Recounted today the SuCs opened in March in Europe. 26 locations with a total of 324 chargers all 250kW. If they continue this trend I don't mind opening the network. By comparison Ionity has 10 locations with 34 chargers opened in March.

    Completed - suggested installing clear signage to ensure efficient use of chargers by users. Eg maintain a space between V2 chargers where possible, No parking across 2 bays etc

    Note the draw at the end of the survey is only open for residents in The Netherlands, France or Norway aged 18 years and above....

    I mean, that is the point of an open form, to collect data and there's never going to be 100% consensus. At least they are polling the user base - but I would prefer if you had to log in with your tesla account or something.

    Isn't that kind of like asking turkeys to vote for Christmas? If their goal is to make money from the charger network then opening it up grants access to a lot more customers.

    I'm in favour of the supercharging network to be opened to all EVs in principle. As it would accelerate the move to electric transport.

    But with similar pricing as Ionity (for non-Teslas) so Tesla can build more superchargers with the profit they bring in. And also not to the detriment of Tesla owners, so they need to get some sort of priority. Thinking out loud here but for an 8 stall supercharger, maybe dedicate 6 stalls to Teslas only and the other 2 for anyone

    Most importantly, extend the bejaysus out of the global supercharger network

    Yeah as long as there's always a charger free for a Tesla I don't really mind.

    I'd agree with the 6/2 split but the likes of Birdhill with only 6 chargers or Tralee (2?) have the opportunity to become a disaster from a Tesla point of view.

    Other ev owners can say that the extra money being brought in can be spent upgrading the Tesla network, but I don't believe we are in for a flood of new chargers here in Ireland due to our miniscule size

    So be careful what you wish for when you are waiting perhaps 30 minutes for a charge behind a Kia or a VW, when that same charger used to be available for you in the past!!

    If Tesla didn't open up, they would most likely be forced to by competition regulators in the national interest.

    Better to be able to choose your corporate direction rather than have it decided for you. But clearly there are serious financial incentives both in the US & EU to do so, which happens to align nicely with Elon's stated vision of an electric future.

    I don't foresee how the competition regulators would be able to force Tesla to open up, even in the national interest. What is anticompetitive about the Tesla business model for the SuC network? Tesla owners pay a premium on the price of their cars to join the service. In Ireland, and I'm sure elsewhere, SuC sites are well outnumbered by other service providers, so they don't count as a monopoly.

    Tesla, if they would use the new revenue stream in quickly expanding the SuC network in that region, would likely be best off opening up, in their own interest.

    As for me, I'm firmly in both camps - I was all in favour of Tesla opening up when I was buying a different EV, now that I bought a Tesla I'm not so sure... (kidding - especially if the opening up leads to a better proliferation of SuC sites around Ireland and beyond)

    Simple - the Tesla supercharger network is a closed network and the EU could force a structural change upon in it to open up if it wanted to keep operating in the single market. EU has one of the strongest competition policy systems worldwide and definately has the power to do so.

    This University of California article summises the issue quite well as a 'chicken and egg' problem.

    Charging station providers will not invest huge amount of money in stations until there are enough cars on the road. But you won't have mass sales of cars until there are enough stations.

    Meanwhile, Tesla split its investments on both sides of the market and developed the charging infrastructure in parallel — a necessary element of their success...

    ...Despite likely being defensible in the short run, it is very unlikely that proprietary charging networks are defensible in the long run...

    The UK Competition & Markets Authority produced report in June 2021 noting:

    Closed networks can restrict the charging options available to drivers and make it more complex and difficult for people to charge and switch to different chargepoints. Moving forward it will be crucial for networks to be open and available for use by all EV drivers – particularly at this early critical stage to build people’s trust and confidence.

    We note that Tesla has indicated that it intends to open its Supercharger network in the future - and for example recently announced it’s planning to do this in Norway next year - which we strongly welcome.

    Either way its a moot point, because Tesla, using their first mover advantage have been very clear in their intention to open up. Moreover, if it wants access to public funding and special taxation treatments (which it does) to assist with its expansion, then it can not be discrimintory.

    Personally I am vexed by this whole thing. As an Tesla owner I selfishly want to the network to stay closed, but if we are going to move towards full electrification of the national fleet, we need open competitive charging networks.

    I did the survey yesterday, my voice has zero weight and so do yours, the decision is already made and we are going through the motions. Share price went up with this happened first, Tesla EV sales are not impacted, that's the end of it.

    I have never queued at a SuC, I hope that day never comes because if it does then I may as well buy something other than Tesla with the next car

    Wife just got in from work. One of the sales guys was telling her he's put a deposit down on an electric car.

    He's been out twice in my car and loved the idea of going full electric (currently driving a hybrid).

    I asked her did he go for the model 3 or the Y as he was leaning heavily to Tesla. No, he went for the Kia she says. He was reading that SuC is opening and with one in sandyford (where their office is) it would be very easy to charge there!!

    I'll wait a bit longer but if it eventually comes to pass I'm going to go for an Ioniq 5. Nothing tying me to Tesla anymore.

    I would love a tesla but can't justify one at the moment & I'm also very happy with my ioniq se & the fact that the superchargers opening up will be fine for me for a long trip will be great but that will not be often as the majority of my charging will be at home anyway.

    Same goes if I bought a model 3, I still won't be using much public charging especially with the much longer range I would gain

    Yes, it’s a PHEV with it’s AC cable plugged into a DC charger plug, leaving the DC pins on the floor exposed to the elements on a week old SuC.
