But, there would have been an intervention by NATO and an end, in some way, to the hostilities. When this all kicked off, I was firmly on the side of no intervention, due to the Nuclear threat. But seeing how Russia has seen a non-intervention as a green light for atrocities, I believe it was a terrible mistake not to call Putins bluff on it and hold Air Superiority, at least.

This thread has been derailed / deflected all over the place. IMO the FACTS are as follows :-

Putin said , as recently as a few months ago that

    (a) UKR is a failed state and governed by nazis

(b ) Russia and Ukr are all the on family/ we are all brothers or words to that effect.

    (c) it was a MAJOR MAJOR mistake that the USSR was broken up

All the reasons being given by Putin to justify the invasion are deflections and we are all ‘ buying into them’

eg existance of bio- chemical facilities, developing an army to threaten a Russia , etc, etc

THE BOTTOM LINE is that Putin wants to recreate the USSR by WHATEVER MEANS. The groundwork for this objective started when he became president and we did not know it.

‘he waits for an opportunity when a number of factors exist and then he pounces to control’ bits here and bits there’ eg Georgia, part of Moldova , Crimera, Donbas area.

And because the WEST has not really reacted to any of this apart from sanctions that the Russians could manage to deal with without significantly upsetting them, Putin PLOUGHED on.

One key part of his strategy is to develop a bit of ferment by identifying/ placing RU sympathisers in the country /part of country he wants to annex and then say ‘ these people speak Russian and they really beylong to the homeland ‘ etc , etc , and away he goes.

    As the question goes:-

How do you eat an elephant?

Answer - A little bit at a time.

Is it fake. Could RU not have got a few seamstress/tailors run up circa 500 uniforms. Fit out 500 conscripts with them . Get them to roll in the muck,. Get a few of them to wear bloodied bandages , look dour/ dejected for the camera and away you go!!

You always start your pro putin shyte with "I'm not sure if I should " or "here's the other side ". The bottom line is that Russia attached Ukraine, Russians raped, tortured, and slaughtered Ukranians. No Russian civilians have been killed let alone raped or tortured. So as far as I'm concerned you can shove your whataboutery where the sun don't shine.

The Geneva Convention exists for a reason.

That said, I wouldn't believe anything (or be so gullible as to post it on here) the Russians claim without checking it had been verified by several independent media sources. They lie as easily as breathing.

US politics rarely agrees or gets things done quickly. Aircraft are out as the Ukrainians couldn't use Western planes plus it would bring a wider escalation a lot closer.

I think JP Morgan have pulled out already?

Jame Dimon (probably the most high profile banker in the world) is calling for more sanctions.

Apart from supplying Ukraine with weaponry anything else does give Putin an excuse to do what he wants. Enforcing air superiority wouldn't have stopped what's going on here.

Due to increasing shortage of diesel and other distillates Jet fuel reaches the highest price ever. Probably in the next 2 or 3 weeks we will start to see restrictions in place for Diesel.

These things are easy to say. Work is underway to do that but it will take time. Gas will prove to be the biggest problem.

At this stage if the Russians said it was raining, I'd walk outside myself and check. I dont believe a word they say.

At the start of the invasion RTE played a clip of bertie ahern and it as casual as it was delivered it made a lot of sense, he was asked, having met putin, what was he like?. He said even in the short chat they had he mentioned his hatred for Ukraine several times.

The aim was always to ratchet them up bit by bit. By doing so theoretically would give him reason for pause or to save face and back out. He's very clearly not going to do that.

The Russian Embassy are complaining. Apparently no one will sell them heating oil.

When joe biden talks "off script" specifically naming putin as a war criminal i keep thinking of the old Tommy Tiernan line when the news anchors ask biden about calling out putin directly and it's diplomatic problems ..

Why would a complex that large, in a district served by mains gas, be using oil? Could it be to avoid leaving a metered record of its power consumption which would be way out of proportion with their supposed activities on the site? Mains gas and electricity are metered while oil could be ordered from all number of suppliers. Spare these fuckheads from the cold, send them home to the warmth of mother russia.

I listened to that podcast too. Was quite good, much better than the ones with Harari and Kasparov

Time for Pharma to pull out of Russia and stop exports.

The morale obligation argument is done and dusted.

Interesting, home heating oil has dropped week on week for the last three weeks due to increase in supply.

Mark Hertling seems to think that Ukraine will defeat Russia in Donbass, just like it did at Kyiv.

It looks like the next major offensive planned by the Russians could be the decisive one. They're going to patch together everything they have left in one final attempt to break Ukraine. Given their manpower issues and loss of equipment, it looks like this is their last chance to win.

For the first time, I've decided to donate directly to the Ukraine military. I had sent an e-mail to my local TD's asking that Ireland find a way to send support to Ukraine, but got a weasel non-answer. If they're not going to do anything, then I am, even if it's only a token small amount. I really do think Europe needs to stop Putin in Ukraine, if he doesn't, all we're doing is kicking the can down the road.

Anyone can find ways to donate to the Ukraine military by using this link https://kyivindependent.com/national/heres-how-to-support-ukrainian-military/

Distillates, gasoline and crude itself are all down over the last few weeks. There are very specific problems with Jet on the east coast of the US as they normally rely partly on imports from Europe which are not coming at the moment. Jet supplies are also low in general due to the decrease in demand over the previous couple of years.

It is a temporary problem and the record prices are very localised. We certainly won't be seeing diesel restrictions

Fantastic series and a must watch IMHO. It's one I'd put on the school curriculum.

People who dealt with and interviewed important nazis after WW2 noted a couple of psychopaths among them, but they were the minority. The top nazis with few exceptions were also of above average intelligence and seemingly "civilised" men with a few "charming" types among them. The further down the chain the more "normal" the men and women tended to get. Hitler and his minions knew this and used it too. They chanelled the psychos into concentrated areas like death squads and those who weren't psychos and objected were rarely punished, they were simply moved out into other areas. Russian leaders like Stalin back then and putin now being clumsy and primitive in response would have thrown them out windows, but the Germans were more subtle and clever about it and horrific too.

One of the reasons for evolution of The Final Solution to industrialised extermination camps was the Nazi leadership recognised very early on that most of their men even with all the nazi propaganda about subhuman rats couldn't take to mass murdering unarmed civilians with bullets and throwing them into pits and it was affecting morale. It was more "efficient" to create an industry where the bloody sharp end required a small number of men and women and they could fill those positions with eager psychos and keep it away from the "normal" Germans who could pretend to not really know what was going on and carry on their normal lives. But how could they!! Well, most of us reading this including myself like our steaks and rashers, but how many of that most of us would be OK with physically killing and butchering the cow and pig to get it? We distance ourselves from that nearly every day.

And yes civilisation is a thin veneer alright and ironically people will become very uncivilised to protect it, or more to the point their version of it. That's a very good thing if their version is democracy and freedom, a very bad thing when it's not, but the scary part is the bad will be more so believed and harshly defended as the good. It's one easy way to spot the bad. Today's Russia and yes a too large percentage of today's Russians being a perfect example. Another way to spot the bad is the lack of dissenting voices and nuance to the WE are always right and good, THEY are always wrong and bad credo. Again Russia and too many Russians are a perfect example of this too. Those screaming about putinbots and whataboutery everywhere would do well to remember that. If this were Boards.ru you'd see no Zelenskyybots and read no whataboutery.

We like the comfort of believing in monsters and by god they do exist, but the vast majority of people who follow monsters are just like you and me. It's more comforting to believe them to be monsters too. The vast majority of people just want to grow up build a life for themselves and their families, but those basic positive human desires can be twisted to horrific negative purpose so terribly easily. That's the chilling part we rarely like to acknowledge.
