I don't see why we are letting the Russian embassy operate here any longer. The Russian government are guilty of genocide and by association so is their ambassador in Ireland Filatov. We need to expel them all.

You don't need hiking/military boots if you're fighting a prolonged urban action; not that Ukraine has as strict a dress code as we're used to in NATO or Western armies at the best of times. These are guys that are used to sitting in trenches for weeks on end; they don't have daily PT consisting of cross-country hikes where they'd need good shoes at all times.

In fact I would actually argue the complete opposite: if you wanted to show a fake unit surrendering you would probably have them looking as identical as possible. And you would probably block most of their faces with masks; rather than having them completely visible. And you would have made sure they all had obvious Ukraine flags or arm bands; and so on and so forth.

Anyway I'm not going to keep arguing the toss: it's possible it's a fake sure but I don't really see any compelling evidence it is fake.

It appears that the escalate to de-escalate policy applies to more than just large scale war, one of the best and most up to date reads on the current Russian nuclear policies is a 2019 thesis by Frank Kirbyson, Naval Postgraduate School:-

"The expanded role for nuclear weapons in the 2000 Military Doctrine indicates the Russian Federation adopted an “escalate to de-escalate” strategy. The 2000 Military Doctrine expanded on Russia’s classification of conflicts to include: (1) armed conflicts; (2) local wars; (3) regional wars; (4) global (large-scale) war"

And for anyone thinking that NATO involvement won't go nuclear the author concludes that current Russian nuclear policies supports (perhaps even encourages) the idea of a first strike escalation of large scale conventional conflict into nuclear conflict:-

"The 2000 Military Doctrine goes on further to state “A large-scale war utilizing only conventional weapons will be characterized by the high likelihood of escalating into nuclear war.” The expanded purpose of nuclear weapons and Russia’s clear linkage between conventional attacks and nuclear response strongly support the idea of an escalatory strategy"

It's an very good read for anyone wondering what the current Russian nuclear policy is.

"This thesis examines aims to contribute to the current debate on whether or not the Russian Federation currently possesses an “escalate to de-escalate” nuclear strategy through a comprehensive look at the evolution of Russian military doctrine, capabilities and weapons development, and major annual exercises. The cumulative assessment of this research arrives in agreeance with the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review in that the Russian Federation possesses an “escalate to de-escalate” strategy. However, this research further suggests that Russia assigns an operational role for nonstrategic nuclear weapons in the event of large-scale conflict with either the United States (and/or its NATO allies) or China.

I got banned from boards simply for using that version of that word when reporting a troll - by god no moderator or admin should ban anyone in this thread when directing their horror at the Russian regime using such terms -the Russian regime including the Irish Ambassador to Ireland are indeed that

Not sure if the Germans will agree of the Hungarians. Some seem to be deep in Putins pocket.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

What i dont get is why doesnt the west escalate? why dont they threaten to go into a full war if they do not stop attacking Ukraine put all they're nukes on alert and face putin down see if they really want it. I think all this pandering and sitting on the fence is going ot be disasterous and further strenghten Russia in the long term i mean if we allow Ukraine a democracy to literally be butchered and absorbed by Russia the west may aswell just proclaim Russia and China as rules of the world thru force and will to kill innocent people because we are basically telling them "you can do as you please so long as you have nuke"

The thing is, their lies are always shít lies. It's always completely implausible nonsense and on their propaganda channels, they promote multiple inconsistent and contradictory narratives. If you remember their behaviour during the skripal poisoning and MH17 aftermath, this is just par for the course.

The goal of their lies isn't plausibility, it's to provide a narrative that their loyal minions can repeat, either to themselves or to others in real life or online.

Seems quite skeptical - none of them are injured or look like they've spent a month under siege.

Yup. In fact I'd even go so far as to say their inconsistency and contradictions are a deliberate part and parcel of their propaganda. They know people want, need more than one source, so they appear to provide that, and confusion, while always wheeling back to the core message. And putin's pronouncements are the ultimate arbiter.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Youtube video of a Danish guy asking random Russians if Ukraine should be a part of Russia - a wide variety of answers there.

That ties in with a Guardian eye witness report yesterday - says many people were shot in Bucha in the first few days of the war.

Horrible stuff to be witnessing. With 4 young kids at the start of all this I’m thinking no WW3 please, but now I’ll look back at our generations handling of this as cowardly, privileged and shameful.

We all fear Nukes as the end of civilisation but Fcuk me what civilisation is this if kids and innocent people can be abused like this. It’s barbaric

i dread looking back in time and feeling shame we didn’t demand more from the world.

How long can NATO sit back and really watch this happen?

Sanctions to suit the privileged, hit them on the energy stuff and least for Fcuk sake

The goal of their lies,is not to confuse/muddy the waters (though plenty of clowns will lap it up,unquestioned)

But to convey to you/everyone else, how little they respect you

iirc after the poisioning in uk,the excuse for being in that town, was essentially them 2 agents, reading out/learning off its wikipedia page of notable landmarks......while i openly admit to being ultra weary of uk politians and their motives,to my eyes it looked like sticking two fingers up at em

I saw a Russia expert make this point a few days ago. The more the Goebbels style lies and propaganda whips the population up, the harder it becomes for the regime to even get an 'out' from the Ukraine war.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,306 ✭✭✭✭Drumpot

I heard that On the sam Harris show. He had Ian Bremmer on and he predicted that. Thinks Putin will look to claim Eastern regions and sell it as a win back home.

Yep. It's been described as a Firehose of Falsehood. I understand how it works on a macro level but I struggle to understand how a thinking individual can hold that contradictory stuff in their brain at the same time.

Yes, I lived in Russia for several years, both in the KAMAZ / LADA era, and after ward, in more modern time's, and I'd guess that Ukraine would have been the same. But having said that, these Kamaz trucks were pretty rugged vehicles, I've seen what they were capable of in the mountains of Afghanistan, climbing mountains and crossing river's. While they would have been classified as commercial vehicles, they were built to a military design, and in fact, they were all painted a military green during production. Like the old Russian Tanks which Nato ( I think ) are handing over to Ukraine. Some posters are saying that its just NATO getting rid of old stock,,,,but INMO, the Ukrainians' will not need any instructions on how to manage these tanks,,,,,,and for sure, they will do a lot if damage with them.

Kosovo keen to expedite NATO membership. Presume some fear of Russian backed Serbian threat.

EU will need to stay united while also keeping a close eye on Hungary now more than ever. Orbans victory speech concerning.

30- 40 years ago, think of an abused alter boy in ireland trying to get help from anybody. Nobody would believe them. Even when many accusations were had, none were believed. You can find shocking revelations most decades in most countries and cultures were the crime/abuse seemed obvious afterwards but people turned a blind eye for numerous different reasons.

Sure father Ted had to be made in England because it was considered unsafe to make in ireland! The power of a strongly held belief can overcome many things, including common sense and crimes staring you straight in the face.

Look at Americans, lapping up Trumps absolute horsesh*t and the fact that the semi retarded , bleach drinking Umpa Loompa may get another shot at the WH. How is that even possible? We use political bias as explanation but it’s the same ignorance and belief that drives his support. 45%+ of Americans will vote for Trump , being a republican doesn’t change the fact he’s a dangerous sociopath and repulsive human being who has half of the USA voting for him. I mean Putin didn’t invade Ukraine’s during Trumps tenure because even he doesn’t know what Trump is capable of doing, there’s something wrong when a tyrant is even afraid of what you might do! There’s a deficiency in moral fibre in the voters decision to give that clown the keys to the white house .

People are easily manipulated, we all have our blind spots and it’s usually easier to spot the deficiencies of others. I’ve said it before but if, as humans, we learned to work on our own faults rather then excel at pointing out others , the world would be a much better place.

My son was talking about a couple of Russian kids in his class who were saying they can’t remember ever being in Russia and don’t understand what’s going on. I was explaining to my son that it’s not their fault and they’ve done nothing wrong. Not sure anything negative has happened but it would be quite pathetic for people to pick fights and abuse random Russians for just being Russian.

Interesting commentary from Donnacha Ó Beacháin on the tonight show.

He said we need to sever our reliance on Russian oil/gas as the Baltic states have done.."they are drug dealers with tanks and we are addicts"

Said their economy is small only the size of Italy..

I was rounded on when I said 3 weeks ago that yer man who reversed the lorry into the embassy gates should get a medal! " Oh this might antagonise putin " they wailed. Now look what the bastards troops have done. Not alone should the ambassador be fucked out but the embassy should be burned to the ground.

I was surprised at Oracle's move as Larry Ellison is pretty much a horrible person, disappointed at Microsoft's reaction but not surprised at JP Morgan.

“America must be ready for the possibility of an extended war in Ukraine with unpredictable outcomes. We should prepare for the worst and hope for the best. We must look at this as a wake-up call,” the letter urged.

“We need to make this a permanent, long-lasting stand for democratic ideals and against all forms of evil.”

Full disclosure - I have worked for all three.

I think that if you got rid of the Russian diplomats, the building itself would be far better off being used to help Ukrainians in some way, either as accommodation, or a school for Ukrainian kids, or an intake centre of sorts or anything like that.

Russia is a small economy but al lot of what they sell is essential.

Globally important in fertilizer, energy, raw materials, esp rare minerals.

Relying on them now though is giving them leverage over us.

It is going to be a very hard break.
